  • Projection pursuit(PP) is a computer-intensive method which seeks out interesting linear projections of multivariate data onto a lower dimension space by machine. By working with lower dimensional projections, projection pursuit avoids the sparseness of high dimensional data. We show through simulation that two projection pursuit discriminant mothods proposed by Chen(1989) and Huber(1985) do not improve very much the error rate than the existing methods and compare several classification procedures.

  • We present a fast reconstruction technique for elliptic objects, which can be applied to real-time computer tomography (CT) for simple geometric objects. It will be also shown that only 3 projections are needed to reconstruct an ellipse. A piecewise quadratic model is also proposed for more efficient Kalman filter based support estimation, which is used for the fast reconstruction technique. The performance of the piecewise quadratic model is compared with that of the existing piecewise linear model. Simulation results for the fast reconstruction are also presented.

  • We deal with asymptotic properties of Maximum Likelihood Estimator(MLE) for the parameters appearing in a Hilbert space-valued Stochastic Differential Equation(SDE) and a Stochastic Partial Differential Equation(SPDE). In paractice, the available data are only the finite dimensional projections to the solution of the equation. Using these data we obtain MLE and consider the asymptotic properties as the dimension of projections increases. In particular we explore a relationship between the conditions for the solution and asymptotic properties of MLE.

  • Scenario population projection reflects the high probability of future realization and ease of statistical interpretation. Statistics Korea (2019) also presents the results of 30 combinations, including special scenarios, as official statistics. However, deterministic population projections provide limited information about future uncertainties with several limitations that are not probabilistic. The deterministic population projections are scenario-based estimates and show a perfect autocorrelation of three factors (birth, death, movement) of population variation over time. Therefore, international organizations UN, the Max Planck Population Research Institute (MPIDR) of Germany and the Vienna Population Research Institute (VID) of Austria have suggested stochastic based population estimates. In addition, some National Statistics Offices have also adopted this method to provide information along with the scenario results. This paper calculates the demographics of Korea based on a probabilistic or stochastic basis and then draws the pros and cons and show implications of the scenario (deterministic) population projections.

  • This paper examined the accuracy of the national population projections for the Republic of Korea produced from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Specifically, this study assessed the forecast accuracy of the Total Fertility Rate and life expectancy at birth as well as total and age-group populations. Overall, the data indicated no significant improvement in forecasting total populations. The largest forecast errors were for the young and the elderly, while projections of the working age population were comparatively accurate. The past population projections consistently over-estimated TFR but under-estimated life expectancy at birth. This study also showed that forecast errors in fertility were substantially larger than those in mortality, indicating that behaviorally determined factors are difficult to forecast.

  • In this study, we describe the preliminary application for the delineation of a metal object using cone-beam reconstruction (CBR) based on limited electronic portal imaging device (EPID) projections. A typical Feldkamp, Davis and Kress (FDK) reconstruction algorithm accompanying the edge preserving smoothing filter was used as only a few projections are acquired for reconstruction. In a correlation study of the projection numbers, we found that the size of the seeds and their location depicted by these CBR images were almost identical. Limited views were used for CBR, and our method is inexpensive and competitive for use in clinical applications.

  • In this study, reliable future runoff projections based on RCPs for Yongdam dam watershed was performed using SWAT model, which was validated by k-fold cross validation method, and investigated the factors that cause the differences with respect to runoff projections between this study and previous studies. As a result, annual average runoff compared to baseline runoff would increase 17.7% and 26.1% in 2040s and 2080s respectively under RCP8.5 scenario, and 21.9% and 44.6% in 2040s and 2080s respectively under RCP4.5 scenario. Comparing the results to previous studies, minimum and maximum differences between runoff projections over different studies were 10.3% and 53.2%, even though runoff was projected by the same rainfall-runoff model. SWAT model has 27 parameters and physically based complex structure, so it tends to make different results by the model users' setting. In the future, it is necessary to reduce the cause of difference to generate standard runoff scenarios.

  • We propose new pulse shapes for FCC-compliant ultra-wideband (UWB) radios. The projections onto convex sets (POCS) technique is used to optimize temporal and spectral shapes of UWB pulses under the constraints of all of the desired UWB signal properties: efficient spectral utilization under the FCC spectral mask, time-limitedness, and good autocorrelation. Simulation results show that for all values of the pulse duration, the new pulse shapes not only meet the FCC spectral mask most efficiently, but also have nearly the same autocorrelation functions. It is also observed that our truncated (i.e., strictly time-limited) pulse shapes outperform the truncated Gaussian monocycle in the BER performance of binary TH-PPM systems for the same pulse durations. The POCS technique provides an effective method for designing UWB pulse shapes in terms of its inherent design flexibility and joint optimization capability.

  • This paper presents a new text classifier based on a feature projection technique. In feature projections, training documents are represented as the projections on each feature. A classification process is based on individual feature projections. The final classification is determined by the sum from the individual classification of each feature. In our experiments, the proposed classifier showed high performance. Especially, it have fast execution speed and robustness with noisy data in comparison with k-NN and SVM, which are among the state-of-art text classifiers. Since the algorithm of the proposed classifier is very simple, its implementation and training process can be done very simply. Therefore, it can be a useful classifier in text classification tasks which need fast execution speed, robustness, and high performance.
