  • In planning and evaluating government R&D programs, one of the first steps is to understand the government's current R&D investment portfolio - which fields or topics the government is now investing in in R&D. Analysis methods of an investment portfolio of government R&D tend traditionally to rely on keyword searches or ad-hoc two-dimensional classifications. The main drawback of these approaches is their limited ability to account for the characteristics of the whole government investment in R&D and the role of individual R&D program in it, which tends to depend on the relationship with other programs. This paper suggests a new method for mapping and analyzing government investment in R&D using a combination of methods from natural language processing (NLP) and network analysis. The NLP enables us to build a network of government R&D programs whose links are defined as similarity in R&D topics. Then methods from network analysis show the characteristics of government investment in R&D, including major investment fields, unexplored topics, and key R&D programs which play a role like a hub or a bridge in the network of R&D programs, which are difficult to be identified by conventional methods. These insights can be utilized in planning a new R&D program, in reviewing its proposal, or in evaluating the performance of R&D programs. The utilized (filtered) Korean text corpus consists of hundreds of R&D program descriptions in the budget requests for fiscal year 2017 submitted by government departments to the Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance.

  • Next-generation sequencing of shiitake, oyster, and king oyster spent mushroom substrates collected from Chun-cheon, Yeo-ju, Hong-cheon, Gwang-ju, Ui-ryeong, and A-san was performed. Metabarcoding analysis using amplicon sequence variants was performed to confirm the microbial content ratio in the medium after harvesting the collected mushrooms; the ratio of the contents of various microorganisms in the medium after mushroom harvest varied depending on the materials added to produce the mushroom medium. The WPGMA analysis of the similarity between microbial communities, which was based on the β-diversity, confirmed that the microbial communities in the substrates of the different mushroom varieties were similar.

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and a typical hypervascular tumor. Therefore, it is important to find factors related to angiogenesis in the process of HCC malignancy. In order to find angiogenesis-related factors in HCC, we used combined methods of in silico prediction and an experimental assay. We analyzed 1457 genes extracted from cDNA microarray of HCC patients by text-mining, sequence similarity search and domain analysis. As a result, we predicted that 16 genes were likely to be involved in angiogenesis and then the effects of these genes were confirmed by hypoxia response element(HRE)-luciferase assay. For instant, we classified osteopontin into a potent angiogenic factor and coagulation factor XII into a significant antiangiogenic factor. Collectively, we suggest that using a combination of in silico prediction and experimental approaches, we can identify HCC-specific angiogenesisrelated factors effectively and rapidly.

  • This study was conducted to examine the community structure of ground beetles between coniferous- and deciduous-dominant forest in agricultural landscapes, in Miryang-si, Yeongdong-gun, Icheon-si, and Cheolwon-gun during April to October in 2009. A total of 19 species belonging to 15 genera of 9 subfamilies were identified from 6,253 collected ground beetles. Dominant species from 4 regions were Synuchus nitidus (3,715 individuals, 59.4% of total) and Synuchus cyloderus (1,783 individuals, 28.5%) respectively. Non-metric multidimensional scaling based on Bray-Curtis similarity showed that ground beetle assemblage was not different between forest stands, but it was significantly different among regions. Overall, forest stands of secondary forests may not show a different community structure of ground beetle assemblages in our study. However, monitoring on the ground beetle fauna as well as other arthropods of secondary forests in agricultural landscapes is still important for the management and conservation of biodiversity, because forests provides important habitats for many predatory arthropods, such as ground beetles, spiders and rove beetles.

  • This study applied network agenda-setting theory to analyze the impact of the agenda-setting function of the media on certain issues by focusing on the agenda at the center of controversy, 'Creative Economy'. To this end, the study extracted the data referred to creative economy in the media and SNS from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2014, and analyzed the data using the network analysis program UCINET and the Korean language analysis program Textom. The results of the present study show that, during the period under former President Lee (2008-2011), the media's creative economy agenda-setting function did not exert a significant impact on the agenda-setting within SNS. However, from 2012 when the government of former President Park Geun-hye had started, the agenda-setting function of the media starts to show increasingly strong influence on the agenda cognition in SNS. The central words and sub-words configuration forming the center of the semantic network moved in the direction of a high correlation, in addition to the gradually increasing correlation based on QAP correlation analysis. In 2014, the semantic networks of the media and SNS bore a close resemblance to each other, while the shape of networks and sub-words structure also had a high level of similarity.

  • In crop breeding program, information about genetic dissimilarity on breeding resources is very important to corroborate genealogical relationships and to predict the most heterozygotic hybrid combinations and inbred breeding. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic variation in Kenyan sunflower breeding lines based on simple sequence repeat (SSR). A total of 83 alleles were detected at 32 SSR loci. The allele number per locus ranged from 2 to 7 with an average of 2.7 alleles per locus detected from the 24 sunflower accessions and the average value of polymorphic information contents (PIC) were 0.384. A cluster analysis based on the genetic similarity coefficients was conducted and the 24 sunflower breeding resources were classified into three groups. The principal coordinates (PCoA) revealed 34% and 13.38% respectively, and 47.38% of total variation. It was found that the genetic diversity within the Kenyan sunflower breeding resources was narrower than that in other sunflower germplasm resources, suggesting the importance and feasibility of introducing elite genotypes from different origins for selection of breeding lines with broader genetic base in Kenyan sunflower breeding program.

  • This paper describes the design of a high-level synthesis system. SODAS-VP. which automatically generates hardwares executing operation sequences in pipelined fashion.Target architecture and clocking schemes to drive pipelined datapath are determined, and the handling of pipeline hazards which degrade the performance of pipeline is considered. Partitioning of an operation into load, operation, and store stages, each of which is executed in partitiones control step, is performend. Pipelinecl hardware is generated by handling pipeline hazards with internal forwarding or delay insertion techniques in partitioning process and resolving resource conflicts among the partitioned control steps with similarity measure as a priority function in module allocation process. Experimental results show that SODAS-VP generates hardwares that execute faster than those generated by HAL and ALPS systems. SODAS-VP brings improvement in execution speed by 17.1% and 7.4% comparing with HAL and ALPS systems for a MCNC benchmark program, 5th order elliptical wave filter, respectively.
