  • Anaerobic decomposition experiments were performed to know the effect of chemical composition and temperature for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from marine sinking particles. Sinking particles were obtained with sediment traps set in Aburatsubo Inlet, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in February, May and August. Sinking particles collected in May were composed of higher fraction of chl. a than the other two months. February and May samples were used to perform the decomposition experiments. VFAs production rates were higher in May sample than February. The production rates increased with increase of incubation temperature, and order of production rates of four VFAs were acetate>n-butyrate>propionate>iso-butyrate at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$. At $28^{\circ}C$, the production rate of propionate was higher than n-butyrate. Based on these results, it is considered that production of VFAs from sinking particles during anaerobic decomposition depends on the chemical composition and temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the aspect of production and perception of Korean vowels /${\Lambda}$/ and /o/ and to discuss the correlation between production and perception of the two vowels. For this purpose, two separate experiments were conducted. 19 Chinese learners and 20 Korean native speakers produced Korean vowels /${\Lambda}$/ and /o/. Production experiments indicated that Koreans and Chinese female groups revealed common features in production, showing that they all pronounced /${\Lambda}$/ and /o/ in a distinguishable manner in the acoustic space. On the other hand, the Chinese male group failed to show that they could pronounce two vowels distinctively. The Chinese male group seemed to be confused in vowel height between the two vowels. A perception experiment was carried out on a continuum consisting of 11 synthesized stimuli. The perceptual judgment from referred Chinese and Korean subjects showed that Koreans and Chinese female groups had the same phonological boundaries (stimulus '04') for the two vowels on the continuum. However, the Chinese male group made perceptual criterion on stimulus '03'. These results confirmed that there was strong correlation between the aspect of production and perception.

  • The accumulation of benzophenanthridine alkaloids, sanguinarine, chelerythrine, chelirubine and macarpine occurred in suspension cultures of Eschscholtzia californica. To increase alkaloid production, feeding experiments with the biosynthetic precursors, tyrosine, tyramine, L-dopa, dopamine with and without elicitation were studied. In feeding experiments with various precursors, the total alkaloid production was slightly increased. The precursor feeding with elicitation, however, increased total alkaloid production several times.

  • The effect of phosphate on the production of erythritol and gluconic acid during the batch fermentation of Candida magnoliae SR101 was investigated. In the flask culture experiments, the results showed that phosphate concentration affected the production of erythritol and gluconic acid in Candida magnoliae. In the tormentor experiments, the increase of phosphate concentration of medium up to 10 g/L increased the gluconic acid, while the maximum erythritol concentration was 121.7 g/L from 250 g/L glucose and 3 g/L $KH_2PO_4$

  • This study investigates solving production problems in an automotive stamping plant using Finite Element (FE) analysis. The fundamentals of stamping, metal plasticity and FE analysis are developed. In this paper, we provide the basis for a simulation of the stamping of a production part, the automotive rear floorpan. On-plant factorial Design of Experiments (DoE) were simulated using the floorpan model. The accuracy of the simulations was undetermined because of variability in the DoE results. Predictions of flange shape, wrinkling and thickness show qualitative agreement with manufactured parts and indicate that simulating an industrial part is feasible.

  • The primary goal of this study is to find out how the effect of speaking rate has some influence on the production and perception across languages. Through both experiments of production and perception, an English native speaker changes both production and perception simultaneously. Especially the production of the temporal features changes relatively fast. On the contrary, Chinese and Korean speakers changes their production rather than perception by following the speaking rate.

  • In order to develop a new variety of rice that adapts to the climate of Aomori prefecture and possesses characteristics suitable for production of high quality Japanese sake, artificial cross experiments were executed between Yamadanishiki, which is widely used nationwide as an authentic variety of rice for sake production, and Hanafubuki, which was peviously developed by Aomori prefecture. An excellent hybrid, named Hanaomoi, was selected and fixed by a series of selection experiments and systematic cultivation. Unpolished Hanaomoi rice contained less amount of protein than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Unpolished rice of Hanaomoi was harder than Yamadanishiri and Hanafubuki, therefore polishing treatment was done in high yield and one could obtain a high degree of polish on the rice(namely 40% polishing). These features are advantageous to production of high quality of sake.Test brewing using 40% polished Hanaomoi gave rise to a characteristic sake that contained a slightly higher amount of alcohol and flavor components than Yamadanishiki and Hanafubuki. Sensory tests concluded that sake from Hanaomoi was as superior as the one from authentic Yamadanishiki. Hanaomoi is a promising variety of rice suitable for production of a high quality sake exclusive to Aomori prefecture.

  • Objective: The objective was to test if creep feeding (CF) improves the average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight of calves submitted to temporary weaning (TW) and if the combination of CF and TW improves conception and pregnancy rates of cows. Methods: Primiparous (n = 74) and primiparous and multiparous (n = 104) cows grazing native grasslands were used in experiment 1 and 2; respectively. The experimental design was in plots divided into complete random blocks with two replications. The CF was the big plot and TW the small plot, thus four experimental groups were formed: i) -CF-TW (n = 21 and 27); ii) -CF+TW (n = 16 and 24); iii) +CF-TW (n = 20 and 26); iv) +CF+TW (n = 17 and 27) with cow-calf pairs for experiments 1 and 2; respectively. Nose plate application for TW had a duration of 14 and 15 days for experiment 1 and 2: respectively. In experiment 1, calves were fed at 1% of live weight for 112 days using a commercial supplement with 18.4% crude protein. In experiment 2, the supplementation lasted 98 days, and was carried out with corn dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS) at 40% of the potential intake on a daily basis. Results: The TW reduced ADG during the TW period and the following 14 days, but the negative effect of TW was maintained until the final weaning only in experiment 2. The CF increased ADG during TW period in both experiments. The TW promoted an earlier conception of the dams (12 days in -CF treatment and 19 days in +CF treatment, p<0.01) and CF increased pregnancy rate in experiment 1, being the effects not consistent between experiments. Conclusion: The CF consistently promoted an increase in ADG during the period of TW and increased final weaning weight of calves, therefore it is economically viable.

  • Lakes are one of major sources of methane gas due to anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in sediments. Since methane released from lakes is a greenhouse gas, it is necessary to investigate factors affecting methane production of lakes. This study conducted field and incubation experiments in Lake Asan in August and October to determine effects of thermal stratification and sediment organic matter characteristics on methane production. Field experiments measured temperature and dissolved oxygen to determine the formation of thermal stratification of lakes. Methane and organic matter characteristics were analyzed using gas chromatography, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzers, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Incubation experiments under anaerobic conditions used sediment and water samples from the same site. Field results showed higher methane fluxes in August and increased Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) concentration closer to Asan Bay seawall. Elevated methane fluxes and DOC concentration resulted from intensified anaerobic decomposition formed by thermal stratification. Incubation results indicated that sediment organic matter characteristics influenced methane flux between sites. Statistical analysis revealed that thermal stratification could be a primary factor affecting methane production of lakes. Characteristics of sediment organic matter with respect to quantity and quality could be factors influencing methane production of lakes. Results of this study can serve as fundamental data for predicting methane emissions from lakes due to climate change and for mitigating lake's contributions to global warming.

  • Two experiments were conducted to determine the validity of the deuterium oxide ($D_2O$) dilution method to estimate milk intake by pigs. A total of 39 piglets weaned from their dams 24 - 36 hours after birth and trained to drink from artificial nipples, were used for two experiments. Estimates of milk replacer consumption of individual piglets over 1, 3, 5 and 7 days were made by the $D_2O$ dilution method and by dissappearance. Milk intakes estimated by this $D_2O$ dilution method were significantly correlated ($R^2$ = 0.98-0.99) with milk intake measured by disappearance. The average difference between estimates by disappearance and estimates by the $D_2O$ dilution method were -1%, +0.5%, +0.5% and -2.1% for measurement period of 1, 3, 5 and 7 days respectively.
