Is there a causal effect between agricultural production and carbon dioxide emissions in Ghana?

  • According to FAO, "agricultural sectors are particularly exposed to the effects of climate change and increases climate variability". As a result, the study makes an attempt to answer the question: Is there a causal effect between agricultural production and carbon dioxide emissions in Ghana? By employing a time series data spanning from 1960 to 2015 using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag method. There was evidence of a long-run equilibrium relationship running from copra production, corn production, green coffee production, milled rice production, millet production, palm kernel production and sorghum production to carbon dioxide emissions. The short-run equilibrium relationship shows that, a 1% increase in copra and green coffee production will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 0.22% and 0.03%, a 1% increase in millet and sorghum production will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 0.13% and 0.11% in the short-run while a 31% of future fluctuations in carbon dioxide emissions are due to shocks in corn production. There was bidirectional causality between milled rice production and carbon dioxide emissions, millet production and carbon dioxide emissions and, sorghum production and carbon dioxide emissions; and a unidirectional causality running from corn production to carbon dioxide emissions and carbon dioxide emissions to palm kernel production.

농업환경의 개념에 관한 법률적 논의 현황과 문제점 분석 (The Use of Agri-environment Concept in the Legislation and the Improvements in South Korea)

  • This study analyses the use of agri-environment concept in South Korean laws and tries to identify the limitations and improvements. The agri-environment has been used in the EU agricultural policy since the mid 1980s, and now became the most important policy in the rural development policy. It has been regarded as a concept explaining the various factors for agricultural production. However, the EU defines it as results of agricultural production which includes not only environmental and natural features but also social and historical resources in rural areas. This definition has played a key role in the 2013 reform of the CAP. Because many developed countries are implementing the agri-environmental policy, South Korea needs to introduce it soon. In doing so, this research explores how the current South Korean laws are dealing with the relationship between agriculture and environment. It reviews 34 laws in total and finds out neither act applying the concept of agri-environment, nor recognizing the role of agricultural production in biological and environmental conservation. Nevertheless, this research identifies that some acts could be a basis for introducing agri-environmental policy in South Korea if they may complement the interrelationship between the agricultural production and conservation of rural resources.

생산함수를 이용한 농업용수 관개량과 벼 생산성간 관계 평가 (Relationship Assessment on Amount of Irrigation Water & Productivity of Rice by Production Function)

  • BACKGROUND: Production function gives the equation that shows the relationship between the quantities of productive factors used and the amount of product obtained, and can answer a variety of questions. This study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between irrigation water used for rice production and rice productivity by the production function which shows the mathematical relation between input and output. METHODS AND RESULTS: The statistical data on rice production and on the amount of irrigation water were used for the production function analysis. The analysis period was separated for 1966-1981 and 1982-2011, based on goal's change on agriculture from 'increasing food' to 'complex farming'. The relation between irrigation and yield considering production function is a short-term production function both before and after 1982. These results can be expressed by the sigmoid relation. When comparing the graphs of the two analyzed periods, there are differences in quantity between the maximum point and the minimum point during the same analysis period, which can be called an 'Irrigation Effect' by the difference of irrigation, and 'Technical Effect' by the difference by inputs like as fertilizers etc. CONCLUSION: The results could be useful as information for assessing the relationship between agricultural water and the productivity of rice and predicting rice productivity by irrigation water in Korea.

  • This paper considers single-product production and inventory management problem where cumulative demands up to each time period are mutually independent random variables(known) having continuous probability distributions and the associated cost-minimizing production schedule (when to produce and how much to produce) need be determined in rolling horizon environment. For the problem, both the production cost and the inventory holding and backlogging costs are included in the whole system cost. The probability distributions of these costs are expressed in terms of random demands, and utilized to exploit a solution procedure for a production schedule which minimizes the expected unit time system cost and also reduces the probability of rist that, for the first-period of each production cycle (rolling horizon), the cost of the "production" option will exceed that of the "non-production" one. Effects of Value Inclination of the Producers on Production Intention of Environment-Friendly Products: Mediation Effects of Perceived Public Certification and Shared Value

  • This study attempted to identify the effects that would be brought about by the value inclination of agricultural and livestock products producers upon the intention to produce environment -friendly products. In this study, We analyzed the data used in Yang et al.(2014) with producers of agricultural and livestock products in Incheon-si and Gyeonggi-do. Total of 149 valid questionnaires were corrected and value inclination as divided into individualism orientation and collectivism orientation, it has been tried to identify whether the intention to produce environment-friendly products would vary with producer's orientation or not. According to the analysis result, individualism, collectivism perceived public certification and shard value were positive effect on production intention of environment-friendly product. This can be said to have been an attempt to establish a more effective and specific strategy through identifying the characteristics of producers that must be considered first of all in the process of establishing policies.

Reproduction rate and stolon production rate after transplantation of grass germplasm

  • Grass breeding starts with the process of selecting grass with good traits, and this operation consumes a lot of resources. Therefore, there is a need for an efficient screening method. Stolon is a unit for the storage of carbohydrates and vegetative propagation, which enhances grass growth and grass sod. Grass varieties with active production of stolons have excellent traits because they reproduce quickly and have a high density. To select grass with such a trait, the survival rate and the production rate of stolon after transplantation of 72 grass germplasms were investigated. After transplantation, the survival rate ranged from 75% to 100%. The majority of the grass cultivars showed a 100% survival rate. Therefore, the group was divided into two groups: A grass variety showing 100% survival and a grass variety that did not show 100% survival. The grass cultivar group, which showed a 100% survival rate after transplantation, included 61 turf varieties, and the rates of stolon production in these grass varieties ranged from 0 to 100%. In contrast, 10 varieties were included in the grass cultivar group that did not show 100% survival after transplantation. These cultivars had a stolon production rate of 0 to 33%. The results suggest that grass germplasms with a 100% survival rate should be selected.

북한의 가뭄 특성 변화가 농업에 미치는 영향 평가 (Evaluation of the Impact of Changes in Drought Characteristics on Agriculture in the DPRK)

  • To evaluate the impact of drought on agriculture in N. Korea, SPI (standardized precipitation index) analysis was carried out by utilizing time-series precipitation data during 1996 - 2003 when severe drought occurred throughout the country. The SPI value was estimated to reach 12 in approximately 60% of the total period, indicating that agricultural productivity deteriorated rapidly due to the long-term drought. The national average drought cycle, based on SPI 12, was estimated as 32.5 months for the last 40 years. However, when examined on 20-year basis, the drought cycle was shortened by 10.6 months in last 20 years (30.3 months) as compared to previous 20 years (40.9 months). Annual crop production continued to increase mainly in rice and maize until the mid-1990s, but declined sharply thereafter due to the drought. After the drought period, the production of potatoes of which growth is more resistant to drought started to increase to the production level comparable to those of rice and soybean. It is expected that changes in the agricultural production environment in N. Korea will be inevitable due to the climate change. To this end, using the results of the drought cycle analysis, it is possible to analyze the changes in the agricultural production environment in N. Korea in the future.

  • 정보통신기술이 점차 발전함에 따라 기존의 생산 시스템에 네트워크 및 컴퓨팅 기술을 적용하여 효율적인 생산 환경을 유지하는 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다. 고전적인 제어 시스템과 달리 이러한 스마트 생산 시스템은 생산 환경에 대한 데이터를 실시간으로 수집하여 통계화하고, 그 변화에 따라 유동적으로 작동할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 네트워크 기반의 센서를 통해 실시간으로 데이터를 수집하고, 환경 변화에 효과적으로 대응할 수 있는 계측 시스템을 제시한다. 또한 이를 스마트팜에 적용하여 외부의 환경 변화에 대처하고 효과적인 생산 환경을 유지할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

골판지 불량 검색 시스템 개발, 현장적용과 생산 불량률 변화 (Development of Defects Detecting System for Corrugated Board, Mill Application, and Changes of Production Defects Ratio)

  • Defects of corrugated board were limiting factors to the corrugated industry's growth. On-line detecting systems of defects are beneficial to increase profits of the corrugated board companies by reducing base paper consumption, increasing process reliability, and increasing productivity. By replacing naked eye inspection of defects to a defects detecting system, continuous inspection without fatigue may guarantee final products quality. The system was developed, which was consisted of line scan CCD camera, lens, illuminating parts, high speed image processor, software, various input parts, and output parts. First installation location of the system was at before fluting process after base paper unwinding, and surface of liner board was inspected by the system. Second installation location was after fluting process and combining process for liner board. Production loss includes ragged appearance of edge, irregular flute shape, wrong combination of flute, score cracking, defects in base paper, and flute cracking. The production loss was analyzed before and after the system installation at a commercial domestic mill. The production loss ratio was defined as a production loss weight per total production weight. The production loss ratio before the installation was decreased a lot from 1.28%(during 3 months before installation) to 0.76%(during 12 months after the first installation) and to 0.25%(during 6 months after the second installation).
