  • While software globalization is becoming more important, little research has been undertaken into what is meant by globalization and the degree of globalization capability in the Korean software industry. A survey study was conducted among software engineering professionals, gathering the data from 31 IT companies across 7 large-scale projects in Korea. The results indicate that the evaluation score for globalization capability is 2.51 out of 5 points, which is the lowest compared to other areas of software engineering such as team capability (2.88), process and tool supports (2.96), project management (2.97) and development (3.64). We also discuss how to introduce software globalization technologies in Korea based on the successful experiences of leading global IT companies.

  • Purpose: This paper reviews the papers on statistical quality control issues which are published in Journal of the Korean Society for Quality Management (KSQM) since 1965. The literature review is purposed to survey a variety of statistical quality control issues. Methods: By grouping all of statistical quality control issues into 3 categories:; quality inspections, control charts, and process capability analysis. Results: Grouping all of papers on statistical quality control published in journal of the KSQM for 50 years into 3 categories, we provide a chronological roadmap for individual categories, and summarize the contents and contributions of surveyed papers. Conclusion: The review paper is expected to provide future direction to improve statistical quality control theories and applications in manufacturing and service industries.

  • This study focuses primarily on the construction of the wartime sealift operation model from US to Korea. There are some uncertainties in the process of sealift operation such as the procurement rate of materiel in US, the distribution of KFS on four initial position locations at the start of the activation, and the number of ports and berths in the SPOES and SPODS. The sealift capability, based on the allocation of sealift assets such as the number of vessels, berths, and ports, is evaluated through simulation. The simulation is executed with a baseline wartime scenario and then the results are analyzed through a sensitivity analysis. The military planner may use of this model as a standard for establishing effective and concrete sealift operation plan in the near future.

  • A device to measure the temperature difference between the supernatant and the sediment blanket in the course of SV30 measurement in processing of activated sludge process. The temperature elevation in the sludge sediment represent the metabolic heat production by the microorganisms and can be an indicator for the capability of waste treatment. The utilities of the device for the analysis of activated sludge process were demonstrated in this report.

  • Roll profile design in spape rolling with a complex-shaped part depends on the designer's experience, which is general, is acquired through costly trial-and-error process. As a prerequisite for developing a scientific approach to roll profile design, we present a finite element model to simulate 3-D deformation of complex-shaped parts occuring in multi-pass sequence. Demonstrated is the process model's capability to deal with rolling of a complex-shaped part.

  • In manufacture of printed circuit boards, one important issue is precisely to measure the three-dimensional shape of the solder paste silk-screened prior to direct surface mounting of chips. This paper presents the 3D shape reconstruction of solder paste using the optical triangulation method based on structured light or slit beam and the measurement algorithm for height, volume. area, and coplanarity on component pads from the 3D range image. Futhermore, statistical process control function is incorporated for process capability analysis.

  • 6 sigma movement is the most prominent quality improvement methodology in practice. Measurement plays an important role in helping any organization improve quality. Therefore, the measurement systems analysis is the first step for the quality improvement of manufacturing process in 6 sigma movement. In this study, we investigate the effect of Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility(Gage R&R) in view of defect rate and process capability indices, and provide guidelines for acceptance of gage repeatability and reproducibility(%R&R) for six sigma quality.

  • A key element in the control of Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) is dispatching policy. This paper proposes a new dispatching algorithm for an efficient operation of AGVS. Based on an evolutionary operation, it has an adaptive control capability responding to changes of the system environment. The performance of the algorithm is compared with some well-known dispatching rules in terms of the system throughput through simulation. Sensitivity analysis is carried out varying the buffer capacity and the number of AGVS.

  • Finite element analysis is carried out for simulation of the multi-stage elliptic cup drawing process with the large aspect ratio. The analysis incorporates with shell elements for an elasto-plastic finite element method with the explicit time integration scheme. For the simulation, LS-DYNA3D is utilized for its wide capability of solving forming problems. The simulation result shows that the non-uniform drawing ratio at the elliptic cross section ad the small shoulder radius cause failure such as tearing and wrinkling. The result suggests the guideline to modify the tool shape for prevention of the failure during the drawing process.
