  • An optical sheet with microlens array (MLA) is designed and fabricated as a substitute for the prism sheets of LCD backlight. Using photoresist thermal reflow, MLAs were fabricated on PET film with thickness of $100{\mu}m$, and we measured the change of MLA profile in terms of exposure time, reflow temperature and reflow time.

  • In this paper, we developed an optical sheet for LED lighting with integrated $CO_2$ gas and temperature sensor which can monitor at the indoor environment. The optical sheet for LED lighting is fabricated through PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) injection process using mold. This research enables to fabricate the reflective sheet, light-guide plate and the prism sheet in a optical sheet. The fabricated sheet demonstrates higher intensity of optical efficiency compared with single-sided sheets. The $CO_2$ sensor was fabricated using NDIR(NON-Dispersive Infrared) method and it has $0.0235mV/V{\cdot}PPM$ sensitivity. The temperature sensor was fabricated using RTD(Resistance temperature detector) method and it has $0.563{\Omega}/^{\circ}C $sensitivity.

  • Dot pattern print methods composed of a diffusion film and two prism sheets, have been generally used for backlighting systems of LCDs. However, this methods require complex structures and show high power consumption and optical loss. To improve these disadvantages of conventional backlight units, light guides using highly scattering optical transmissions (HSOT) polymer as scatters, have been introduced. In this study we analyzed multiple scattering effect in light guide by means of Monte carlo simulation based on Mie scattering theory and ray tracing method. As a result it was revealed that scattering intensity depends on the size of scatters. On the other hands, it was shown that scattering efficiency depends on the wavelength of fluorescent lamp as well as the size of scatters.

  • LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD unit and it consists of several optical sheets(such as prism, diffuser and protector sheets), LGP (Light Guiding Plate), light source (CCFL or LED) and mold frame. The LGP of LCD-BLU is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50{\sim}200$ um in diameter on it by etching process. But the surface of the etched dots of LGP is very rough due to the characteristics of the etching process during the mold fabrication, so that its light loss is high along with the dispersion of light into the surface. Accordingly, there is a limit in raising the luminance of LCD-BLU. In order to overcome the limit of current etched dot patterned LGP, optical pattern design with 50um micro-lens was applied in the present study. The micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LiGA with thermal reflow process was applied to the optical design of LGP. The attention was paid to the effects of different aspect ratio (i.e. $0.2{\sim}0.5$) of optical pattern conditions to the brightness distribution of BLU with micro-lens patterned LGP. Finally, high aspect ratio micro-lens patterned LGP showed superior results to the one made by low aspect ratio in average luminance.

  • In order to cope with the requirements of smaller patterns, larger surfaces and lower costs in the fields of displays, optics and energy, greater attentions is now being paid to the development of micro-pattern machining technology. Compared with flat molds, roll molds have the advantages of short delivery, ease of manufacturing larger surfaces, and continuous molding. This paper presents the state-of-the-art of the micro pattern machining technology on the roll molds and introduces some research results on the machining process technology. The copper and nickel-phosphorous-alloy plating process, machining process technology for uniform micro patterns. micro cutting simulation and the real time monitoring system for micro machining are summarized. The developed technologies have led the complete localization of the prism sheets and will be applied to the direct forming process with succeeding research & development.

  • Through the rapid development of LED TV, a large-area edge-lit backlight unit is widely researched in the display industry for enhancing the optical efficiency, luminous uniformity and slim design. In addition, an edge-lit backlight unit includes many optical sheets such as reflection sheet, prism sheet and diffuser sheet. However the function can be replaced by the carefully patterned light guide plate (LGP). Micro patterns which located on the top and bottom surface of light guide plate was designed by ray-tracing optical simulation. The designed patterns improved the light characteristics of LGP, including optical extraction efficiency and intensity distribution uniformity. These results suggest that it is very effective method to design edge-lit LGP with micro-patterns on both sides for large-area display and to reduce the fabrication cost.

  • Luminance properties of external electrode fluorescent lamps and optical components in backlight unit (BLU) and optical transmission rates of optical sheets, are investigated for LCD-TV of 32" in diagonal with WXGA level resolution (1366$\times$768). The luminance is measured in 12-lamps and 18-lamps of BLU. The luminance uniformity preserves about 85 % in the 12-lamps backlight, while the luminance of optical components and the efficiency of backlight in the 12-lamps are lower than those in the 18-lamps backlight. When the lamp luminance in BLU having 12-lamps and 18-lamps is normalized as 100 %, the relative luminance of a diffusion plate, a diffusion sheet, a prism sheet (BEF), a polarization sheet (DBEF), has a constant value without dependence on a lamp luminance. The relative luminance of optical components in 12-lamps BLU is lower than that in 18-lamps backlight. The light transmission rate, the relative luminance of liquid crystal display panel with the luminance 100 % of backlight, is 7.14 % in the use of DBEF and BEF, 6.12 % in the use of only DBEF, and 3.21 % in the use of only BEF. Those Data obtained in this experiment for the lamps and optical components, are the design parameters for the LCD backlight.

  • Recently, according to the rapid development of display, many display applications, such as, cellular phone, navigation, monitor and LCD TV have been changed from CRT type to LCD type. BLU(Back Light Unit) is one of main parts in LCD unit and generally, it consists of a light source, a reflective sheet, a LGP(Light Guide Plate), a diffuser sheet, and two prism sheets. The most important component of BLU is a light guide plate, which diffuses the input light to the TFT-LCD module uniformly. The LGP is usually made by injection molding process, and it has numerous optical micro patterns on the surface. In the present study the micro-patterned stamper which has cylindrical shape was fabricated by using the UV-LiGA process. And the replication characteristics have been compared among three different kinds of injection molding process; general injection molding, injection/compression molding and RHCM(Rapid Heating and Cooling Molding). Average replication ratios of CIM and ICM were 19.1% and 64.6%, respectively. On the other hand, the average replication ratio of RHCM process showed the higher value of 98.4% among these. It show that maintaining the mold surface above $T_g$ could increase the replication ratio of micro patterns substantially.

  • Dual backlight unit incorporating a single light source integrated with a beam splitting reflector was demonstrated, providing a surface light beam for both the keypad and the display section simultaneously. The reflector was realized by aligning a groove substrate with a matching cover, and a light guiding module comprising a stack of light guide panels and prism/diffuser sheets was attached to both sides of the reflector. A light emanating from the light source-placed in the middle of the substrate-undergoes a series of reflections through the reflector to reach the input of the light guiding module. Then it is transformed into a surface light beam, which is used to irradiate the keypad and display sections simultaneously. As for the accomplished dual surface light sources, the measured average luminance and the spatial luminance uniformity were respectively about $420\;cd/m^2$ and 69% for the keypad section, and $640\;cd/m^2$ and 79% for the display section.
