Difficulties encountered in downhole S-wave (shear wave) surveys include the precise determination of shear wave travel times and determination of geophone orientation relative to the direction of polarization caused by the seismic source. In this study an S-wave enhancing and a principal component analysis method were adopted as a tool for determination of S-wave arrivals and the direction of polarization from downhole S-wave survey data. An S-wave enhancing method can almost double the amplitudes of S-waves, and the angle between direction of polarization and a geophone axis can be obtained by a principal component analysis. Once the angle is obtained data recorded by two horizontal geophones are transformed to principal axes, yielding so called scores. The scores gathered along depth are all in-phase, consequently, the accuracy of S-wave arrival picking could be remarkably improved. Applying this processing method to the field data reveals that the test site consists of a layered ground earth structure.
A series of consolidated-undrained cubical triaxial tests was performed to investigate the three- dimensional strength characteristics of anisotropic overconsolidated clay. All specimens sampled in field were loaded under conditions of principal stress directions fixed and aligned with the directions during sampling. A sufficient number of tests It was performed to deter.mine the three- dimensional failure surface in the octahedral plane. The adjusted effective friction angles obtained by the stress state projected on the same octahedral plane did not show anisotropy, while the measured effective friction angles showed considerally difference according to the axes of speccimens. Therefore, Lade failure criterion proposed fort isotropic materials could be also used practically for anisotropic overconsolidated clay. The direction of the plastic strain increment wrectors superimposed on the principal stress space was nearly perpendicular to the traces of the failure surface in the octahedral plane.
In this paper a boundary element method is developed for the general flexural-torsional buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams of arbitrarily shaped cross section. The beam is subjected to a compressive centrally applied concentrated axial load together with arbitrarily axial, transverse and torsional distributed loading, while its edges are restrained by the most general linear boundary conditions. The resulting boundary value problem, described by three coupled ordinary differential equations, is solved employing a boundary integral equation approach. All basic equations are formulated with respect to the principal shear axes coordinate system, which does not coincide with the principal bending one in a nonsymmetric cross section. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used. Six coupled boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, to the angle of twist, to the primary warping function and to two stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a BEM based method. Several beams are analysed to illustrate the method and demonstrate its efficiency and wherever possible its accuracy. The range of applicability of the thin-walled theory and the significant influence of the boundary conditions and the shear deformation effect on the buckling load are investigated through examples with great practical interest.
In order to analyze the mechanical properties of two-way different configurations of prestressed concrete members subjected to axial loading, a finite element model based on the nuclear power plant containments is demonstrated. This model takes into account the influences of different principal stress directions, the uniaxial or biaxial loading, and biaxial loading ratio. The displacement-controlled load is applied to obtain the stress estrain response. The simulated results indicate that the differences of principal stress axes have great effects on the stress-strain response under uniaxial loading. When the specimens are subjected to biaxial loading, the change trend of stress with the increase of loading ratio is obviously different along different layout directions. In addition, correlation experiments and finite element analyses were conducted to verify the validity and reliability of the analysis in this study.
The circles deform into various shape during deformation, the major and minor axes of which indicate the direction of the major and minor principal strains. Likewise, the measured dimensions are used to determine the major and minor principal strain magnitudes. This circular grid technique of measuring strains can be used to diagnose the causes of necking and fracture in industrial practice and to investigate whether these defects were caused by material property variation, changes in lubrication, of incorrect press settings. In non-axisymmetric deep drawing, three modes of forming regimes are found: draw, stretch, plane strain. The stretch mode for non-axisymmetric deep drawing could be defined when the major and minor strains are positive. The draw mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is negative, and plane strain mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is zero. Through experiments the draw mode was shown on the wall and flange are one of a drawn cup, while the plane strain and the stretch mode were on the punch head and the punch corner area respectively, We observed that the punch load of elliptical deep drawing was decreased according to increase of die corner radius and the thickness deformation of minor side was more large than major side.

Understanding the classification of malocclusion is a crucial issue in Orthodontics. It can also help us to diagnose, treat, and understand malocclusion to establish a standard for definite class of patients. Principal component analysis (PCA) and k-means algorithms have been emerging as data analytic methods for cephalometric measurements, due to their intuitive concepts and application potentials. This study analyzed the macro- and meso-scale classification structure and feature basis vectors of 1020 (415 male, 605 female; mean age, 25 years) orthodontic patients using statistical preprocessing, PCA, random matrix theory (RMT) and k-means algorithms. RMT results show that 7 principal components (PCs) are significant standard in the extraction of features. Using k-means algorithms, 3 and 6 clusters were identified and the axes of PC1~3 were determined to be significant for patient classification. Macro-scale classification denotes skeletal Class I, II, III and PC1 means anteroposterior discrepancy of the maxilla and mandible and mandibular position. PC2 and PC3 means vertical pattern and maxillary position respectively; they played significant roles in the meso-scale classification. In conclusion, the typical patient profile (TPP) of each class showed that the data-based classification corresponds with the clinical classification of orthodontic patients. This data-based study can provide insight into the development of new diagnostic classifications.
The polariscope to measure the microscopic stress in CR lens consists of light source polarizer, model, polarizer, CCD, computer, chrome conversion orderly and the principal-stressed difference, (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$) and the fringe order n were measured by analyzing two components of light wave $E_1$ and $E_2$ following each polarizer's steps. The two-dimensional model could be determined from the fact that the optical axes of sample concide with the principal-stress directions. The bi-refringence acted to a light wave and the phase retardation were in proportion to the principal-stressed difference(${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$) and the intensity of final light wave was proportioned to $sin2({\Delta}/2)$ and when ${\Delta}/2=n{\pi}$ (n=0, 1, 2, ${\ldots}$) the extinction occurs. Photoelastic's image by microscopic stress could analyzed using chrome conversion, and the image showed clearly.
Vegetation data of the mixed mesophytic forest in Mt. Chombong area were analyzed by the methods of classification and ordination. 'Weighted group average linkage cluster analysis' recognized five distinctive vegetation groups, based on the abundance data of 83 woody plant species in 70 sampling units. The species diversity was also examined for each group. The importance values of 42 tree species in the groups were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA ordinated five vegetation groups on the first two axes, so as to compare similarity among them in terms of species composition. Acer palmatum, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Quercus mongolica, and Acer mono had greatest influence on the determination of group scores with high eigenvectors (component loadings) in the first axis. Distribution of these four dominant species appeared to be important in determining community association in this diversified forest.

A constitutive model, which can simulate the effect of principal stress rotation associated with direct simple shear test, is proposed in this study. The model is based on two mobilized planes. The plastic strains occur from the two mobilized planes, and depend on stress state, and they are added. The first plane is a plane of maximum shear stress, which rotates about the horizontal axis, and the second plane is a horizontal plane which is spatially fixed. The second plane is used to consider the effect of principal stress rotation on simple shear tests under different stress states. The soil skeleton behavior observed in drained simple shear tests is captured in the model. This constitutive model is incorporated into the dynamic coupled stress-flow finite difference program FLAC. The model is first calibrated with drained simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand. The measured shear stress and volume change are partially induced by principal stress rotation and compared with model calculations. The model is verified by comparing predicted and measured settlements due to rigid footing resting on loose sands. Settlements predicted by the proposed model were very similar to measured settlements. Mohr-Coulomb model can not consider the effect of principal stress rotation and its prediction was only 20% of measured settlements.

This article focuses on a hemispherical resonator gyro driven by the Coriolis effect. A hemispherical shell, called a resonator, is maintained in the resonance state by amplitude control and phase locking control. Parametric excitation has been used to control the amplitude. For rate measurement mode or FTR mode, nodal points have been kept to an amplitude of zero. Angular rate measurement has been demonstrated by rotating a resonator. Frequency mismatch between two stiffness principal axes is a major cause of low performance: vibrating pattern drift and reduced control effectiveness. This mismatch has been reduced significantly by the addition of small mass. A negative spring effect, which lowers resonance frequencies, has been verified experimentally.
