Prefabricated piles used for construction of highway bridges are most of steel pipe piles and few of prestressed concrete piles. Its installation and inspection are less controllable and have much uncertainty due to changes in subsoil and groundwater conditions. However, most of these piles have been controlled using outdated pile driving formula such as Hiley's formula which models just the energy conservation due to its simple applicability in the field. This formula results in overstriking or sometimes understocking due to buckling of pile head. Engineers cannot ensure by the formula whether pile is installed properly. To compensate the drawbacks of excising pile formula, parameters in Hiley's formula and 55 formula are reviewed. Final sets used in pile formula and PDA test results(E.O.I.D) are measured during pile driving along the depth. These measured results along the depth were compared with each other and with N values, so that relations between the each result could be inferred. Also the factor of safety which can be used for pile driving formula are suggested.

This study deals with the effect of a series of moving trucks on the Dynamic Load Factor (DLF). The DLF is calculated by investigating the load effect of moving trucks. Therefore, analytical models for frocks, bridge, and road profiles were developed and dynamic structural analysis computer program were developed. Then the DLFs are calculated as a ratio of maximum dynamic load effect and maximum static load effect. Trucks used in this study are 5 axle semi tractor-trailer with the weight of 36 and 54 ton. Simply supported prestressed concrete box girder bridges with 20 and 40m span length are selected. From the results of the DLF for various headway distances, they show a very scattered and relatively high values of the DLF in case of a 20m span length bridge. For a 40m span length bridge, the results show less scattered and small increase of the DLF compared to a 20m span length bridge.

Free Cantilever Method(FCM) is one of the most effective construction methods when precast prestressed concrete box girders are erected in the construction site. The special feature of FCM is that precast segments are erected in cantilever on the pier and connected in the middle of span to form the complete superstructure. Therefore each structural subsystem will be shown in each construction step and it should be analyzed for design whenever the segment is erected. In this study, the computer program was developed to optimally design the P.C box girder bridge considering tile construction sequence and verified by comparing the calculated results with the data of existing P.C box girder bridges. the sensitivity analysis was performed to show the efficiency of the developed program.

Prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges are vulnerable to corrosion and fracture of tendons, and in particular, structures using the internal post-tensioned with grouted system have difficulties in maintenance due to limitations of inspection. In this study, the actual behavior of PSC I girder bridge was analyzed according to tendon damage. The target PSC I girder bridge, an decommissioned highway bridge of upper and lower bridges, had the service period of 33 years and 20 years, respectively. Deflection and concrete strain were measured according to the location of damaged tendon and loading method. Regardless of the age of the bridge, its structural performance decreased when the damaged tendon was closer to the center of the girder. The change in behavior increased as the truck load approached to the girder where the tendon cut. If the load was applied to the adjacent girder where the tendon was cut, the structural performance was likely to be maintained due to the influence of the entire structural system. The change in deflection was difficult to observe visually, while the concrete strain exceeded the cracking strain. Therefore, it is recommended that future monitoring and inspection of PSC I girder bridges should focus on concrete strain or cracking.
The paper presents a case study in which the structural condition assessment of the East Bay bridge in Gibsonton, Florida is evaluated with the help of remote health monitoring techniques. The bridge is a four-span, continuous, deck-type reinforced concrete structure supported on prestressed pile bents, and is instrumented with smart Fiber Optic Sensors. The sensors used for remote health monitoring are the newly emerged Fabry-Perot (FP), and are both surface-mounted and embedded in the deck. The sensing system can be accessed remotely through fast Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), which permits the evaluation of the bridge behavior under live traffic loads. The bridge was open to traffic since March 2005, and the collected structural data have been continuously analyzed since. The data revealed an increase in strain readings, which suggests a progression in damage. Recent visual observations also indicated the presence of longitudinal cracks along the bridge length. After the formation of these cracks, the sensors readings were analyzed and used to extrapolate the values of the maximum stresses at the crack location. The data obtained were also compared to initial design values of the bridge under factored gravity and live loads. The study showed that the proposed structural health monitoring technique proved to provide an efficient mean for condition assessment of bridge structures providing it is implemented and analyzed with care.

The dynamic responses of a pier-pile-soil system subjected to a barge/flotilla collision are analyzed. A coupled high-speed train and bridge system with a damaged pier after barge/flotilla collision is established by taking the additional unevenness of the track induced by the damaged pier as the self-excitation of the system. The whole process of a CRH2 high-speed train running on the 6×32 m simply-supported PC (prestressed concrete) box-girder bridge with a damaged pier is simulated as a case study. The results show that the lateral displacements and accelerations of the bridge with a damaged pier are much greater than the ones before the collision. The running safety indices of the train increase with the train speed as well as with the number of barges in the flotilla. In flotilla collision, the lateral wheel/rail forces of the train exceed the allowable values at a certain speed, which influences the running safety of the trains.

In this study, the effect of temperature-induced uncertainty to damage monitoring using acceleration-impedance response features is analyzed for presterssed concrete(PSC) girder bridges. Firstly, a damage monitoring algorithm using global and local vibration features is designed. As global and local features, acceleration and electro-mechanical impedance features are selected respectively. Secondly, the temperature effect on the acceleration and impedance features for a lab-scaled PSC girder is experimentally analyzed. From the experimental results, compensation models for temperature-acceleration features and temperature-impedance features are estimated. Finally, the feasibility of the acceleration-impedance-based damage monitoring technique using the compensation model is evaluated in the PSC girder for which a set of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness loss cases were dynamically tested.

In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

Many uncertainties affecting to the structural behavior of prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges reinforced with the un bonded external tendons are analyzed on the basis of the analytical method introduced in the companion paper. Many design parameters, which must be considered in design procedure, such as friction slip at the deviators, number of deviators, time-dependent deformations of concrete, relaxation of tendon and influence of loading history in PSC bridges are reviewed, and a lot of valuable results are obtained through this parametric study. In advance, the structural responses according to the external tendon profiles are analyzed to grasp if an optimum tendon profile depends on the applied loading type, and the obtained results show that the most stable structural response is revealed when the locations of deviators are coincident with the loading points.
Domestically, application of High Flowing Self-Compacting Concrete (HSCC) is limited to building structures and it is difficult to find examples of application in civil infrastructural constructions. However, in the case of North America and Europe, by introducing precast and prestressed system, HSCC is being used for high-density reinforced bridge members. Hence it is assessed that broadening the utilization of HSCC into areas such as bridges and civil construction is required. Therefore in this research, to apply HSCC to high-density reinforced bridge members, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash were mixed in binary and ternary systems. Also the dynamical characteristics of HSCC, following 1st class regulations of Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), were assessed to enable application on high-density reinforced structures. The test results revealed ternary system mixture showed better mechanical characteristics than binary system mixture and the application on high-density reinforced precast bridge members seems possible.
