  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new proportional pressure reducing valve and to verify the validity of a new mechanism with pressure control pin. The dynamic characteristics of the object pressure reducing valve was studied by numerical analysis of the mathematical model. Also, static and dynamic characteristics of the new pressure control valve were tested with a testing system based on the test standard.

  • Pressure vessels are used in various industrial fields. If a defect occurs on the inner or outer surface of a pressure vessel, it may cause a massive accident. A defect on the outer surface can be detected by visual inspection. However, a defect on the inner surface is generally impossible to detect with visual inspection. Nondestructive testing can be used to detect this type of defect. Laser speckle shearing interferometry is one nondestructive testing method that can optically detect a defect; its advantages include noncontact, full field, and real time inspection. This study evaluated the detectable size for an internal defect of a pressure vessel. The material of the pressure vessel was ASTM A53 Gr.B. The internal defect was detected when the pressure vessel was loaded by internal pressure controlled by a pneumatic system. The internal pressure was controlled from 0.2 MPa to 0.6 MPa in increments of 0.2 MPa. The results confirmed that an internal defect with a 25 % defect depth could be detected even at 0.2 MPa pressure variation.

  • There are two methods for conducting the containment local leakage rate test (LLRT) in nuclear power plants: the make-up flow rate method and the pressure decay method. The make-up flow rate method is applied first in most power plants. In this method, the leakage rate is measured by checking the flow rate of the make-up flow. However, when it is difficult to maintain the test pressure because of excessive leakage, the pressure decay method can be used as a complementary method, as the leakage rates at pressures lower than normal can be measured using this method. We studied the method of measuring over leakage using the pressure decay method for conducting the LLRT for the containment building at a nuclear power plant. We performed experiments under conditions similar to those during an LLRT conducted on-site. We measured the characteristics of the leakage rate under varies pressure decay conditions, and calculated the compensation ratio based on these data.

  • The results of stand and field testing of a combustion chamber for a heavy-duty 150 MW gas turbine are discussed. The model represented one of 14 identical segments of a tubular multican combustor constructed in the scale 1:1. The model experiments were executed at a pressure smaller than in the real gas turbine. The combustion efficiency, pressure loss factor, pattern factor, liner wall temperature, flame radiation, fluctuating pressure, and NOx emission were measured at partial and full load for both model and on-site testing. The comparison of these items of information, received on similar modes in the stand and field tests, has allowed the development of a method of calculation and the improvement of gas turbine combustors.

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of two austenitic high-manganese steels was investigated using tensile testing under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. The test results were compared with those of different kinds of austenitic alloys containing Ni, Mn, and N in terms of stress and ductility. It was found that the ultimate tensile stress and ductility were more remarkably decreased under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen than under high-pressure gaseous argon, unlike the yield stress. In the specimens tested under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen, transgranular fractures were usually observed together with intergranular cracking near the fracture surface, whereas in those samples tested under high-pressure gaseous argon, ductile fractures mostly occurred. The austenitic high-manganese steels showed a relatively lower resistance to hydrogen embrittlement than did those with larger amounts of Ni because the formation of deformation twins or microbands in austenitic high-manganese steels probably promoted planar slip, which is associated with localized deformation due to gaseous hydrogen.

  • Acoustic emission testing (AET) of cylinders is advantageous in that it can be directly conducted on cylinders installed in a car, without needing to dissemble them on a real-time basis. Therefore, users prefer AET over other nondestructive testing methods. Owing to these advantages of AET, it has been approved by the Department of Transportation of the U.S. as a safety evaluation method for pressure containers or as an alternative to the hydroproof testing method. This paper presents a study of the quantitative evaluation criteria for a container having ultrasonic testing defects and also for Type 1 and Type 2 gas cylinders, which are defective seamless pressure containers provided by NK, a manufacturer of pressure containers. For the Type 1 cylinder, the process from crack growth to leak was observed in a repetitive fatigue test using a 113 L container according to ASTM E 1419-02. Further, for the Type 2 cylinder, integrity was evaluated using a 119 L sound container and a container damaged by hydraulic pressure, by the slow-fill method according to ASTM E 2191-02. Based on the AET results of the Type 1 and Type 2 cylinders, quantitative evaluation criteria were established for a defective and non-defective container.

  • Recently in the automotive brake industry brake squeal noise has become one of the top automotive quality warranty issues. The contact pressure is used to predict friction coupling in the brake squeal analysis. The formulation of friction coupling has performed by nonlinear static analysis prior to the complex eigenvalue analysis. This paper proposes a validation methodology of squeal analysis using modal testing and contact analysis and examines the effect of predicted contact pressure that leads to the discrepancy between unstable complex mode and squeal frequency. This studies compose a three step validation process : examining the modal characteristics of component and assembly loaded contact pressure using modal testing and FEM analysis and verifying the contact pressure distribution using nonlinear static analysis and experiment. Finally, the unstable modes from complex eigenvalue analysis and realistic squeal frequency from the noise dynamometer are investigated.

  • In the present study, the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the fin-tube and PF heat exchangers have been experimentally investigated under the cooling standard condition. Fin type of PF heat exchanger is a triangler and squarer form. The experimental data of the slit fin-tube and two kinds of PF heat exchangers are measured using the air-enthalpy calorimeter and the constant temperature water bath. As the inlet air velocity increases, the heat transfer rate and pressure drop of the heat exchanger increased. The heat transfer rate and pressure drop of PF-2 heat exchanger of the squarer fin is larger than that of PF-1 heat exchanger of the triangler fin. As the inlet air temperature increases, the heat transfer rate decreases and the pressure drop is nearly uniform.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the gas leakage for a 30-inch ball valve. The ball valve was designed and manufactured for a natural gas transportation through a long-distance pipeline mainly installed in the permafrost region. The gas leakage assessment is based on the pressure testing criteria of international standards. Pressure conditions of the gas leakage test was employed 70 bar, 100 bar, and 110 bar. The amount of the gas leakage at each pressure condition was small and had a value under the pressure testing criteria, ISO 5208. Gas leakage with respect to the test pressure was predicted by the polynomial curve fitting using the experimental results. It is found that the gas leakage rate according to the pressure is proportion to a second order curve.

  • The fuel cell in fuel cell electric vehicle utilizes oxygen in the atmosphere, which requires the use of an air cleaner system to minimize the intake of harmful pollutants. To estimate the performance of the air cleaner system, the pressure drop between the filter inlet and outlet is used under the rated air flow condition. In this study, the effect of sensor error in this air cleaner testing is experimentally carried out. It is found that the errors of the temperature sensor does not significantly affect the estimation of pressure drop. However, in the case of the pressure sensor, 5% sensor error results in the error of pressure drop estimation by 3%. Therefore, it is recommended that the measurement accuracy of the pressure sensor mounted in test system should be maintained at less than 5%.
