  • CNG, which has recently been attracting attention as an alternative fuel in the transportation field to reduce emissions caused by global warming, is natural gas with abundant reserves and mainly composed of methane. Being in a gaseous state, natural gas requires the compression and liquefaction processes for transportation. Until now, general shut-off valves for liquid and gas piping have been developed in Korea, but there are few studies on shut-off valves for high pressures of about 200 bar. Currently, research on the flow analysis of valves is being actively conducted around the world. However, there are relatively many studies on large valves such as low-pressure valves or shipbuilding and marine, and the safety factor through structural analysis to check the structural integrity of the valve is checked at the design stage. Since it is necessary to have a fast response speed while minimizing pressure and speed loss due to flow change, basic research was conducted on the flow analysis of the valve to secure design data, and the numerical analysis was performed on high-pressure automatic shut-off valves applied to CNG refueling stations. After securing the basic valve shape through reverse engineering for advanced products, we compared the valve flow coefficient Cv coefficient with advanced products. As a result, it was found that the reverse engineering model was at the level of about 60%. However, we compared the Cv coefficient by modifying the reverse engineering model, and the result showed that it was improved to about 96%.

  • In contrast to all-time flooded small modular reactor (SMR) systems, an in-kind flooding safety system (FSS) has been proposed as a passive safety system applicable to small modular reactors (SMRs) that adopt a metal containment vessel (MCV). Under transient conditions, the FSS can provide emergency cooling to dry reactor cavities and sustain long-term coolability using re-acquired evaporated steam in the reactor building on demand. When designing an FSS, the effect of the flooding flow area is vital as it affects the overall accident sequence and safety. Therefore, in this study, a MELCOR model of a reference SMR is developed and numerical analysis is performed under postulated accident scenarios. Without flooding, the MCV pressure of the reactor module exceeds the design pressure before core damage. To prevent core damage, an emergency flooding strategy is devised using various flow path parameters and requirements to ensure an adequate emergency coolant supply before the core damage is investigated. The results indicate that a flow area exceeding 0.02 m2 is required in the FSS to prevent MCV overpressure and core damage. This study is the first to report a strategic analysis for appropriately sizing an FSS flooding valve applicable to innovative SMRs.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation on the sealing defects and cracks of O-rings and a valve packing of a gas valve for a LPG cylinder. O-ring in which stops a gas leakage of a liquefied petroleum gas is very important for a LPG valve safety. Valve packing is to open and close a gas flow port for supplying and charging a LPG fuel. The sealing performance of two sealing units ism related to the leak safety and long lift of a gas valve. The investigated results show that most of O-rings was failed due to a circumferential crack in which is caused by partial press bonding failure near the partition zone and an excess compression rate. Some of the O-ring failure was originated by an extrusion of an excessive leak pressure of a LP gas. Thus, this paper strongly recommends a tight quality control and a safety guarantee system of O-rings and valve packing to guarantee a leak safety and to extend a service lift of a gas valve. At the end, a warranty policy of the sealing units should be adopted for increasing a product quality and safety of a gas valve.

  • The stress and deformation behavior of an alarm valve has been analyzed using a finite element method. The strength safety of an alarm valve is calculated for the given maximum test pressure of 2.0MPa. The FEM computed maximum stress of an alarm valve is only 6.1% of yield strength, 370MPa and 4.6% of tensile strength, 485MPa, which are occurred at the corner part between a cover flange and a valve body. And the maximum deformation of $12{\mu}m$ was developed at the middle part of an alarm valve. These results mean that a typical alarm valve was designed with a excessively high strength safety, which may lead to an increase of a weight and a dimension.

  • A PSV (pressurizer safety valve) popping test carried out in the early phases of a refueling outage may trigger a test-induced LOCA(loss of coolant accident) if a PSV fails to fully close and is stuck in a partially open position. According to a KSNP (Korea standard nuclear power plant) low power and shutdown PSA (probabilistic safety assessment), the failure of a high pressure safety injection (HPSI) accompanied by the failure of a PSV to fully close was identified as a dominant accident sequence with a significant impact on low power and shutdown risks (LPSR). In this study, we aim to investigate and verify a new means for mitigating this type of accident using a thermal-hydraulic analysis. In particular, we explore the applicability of an aggressive cool-down combined with operator actions. The results of the various sensitivity studies performed there will help reduce LPSR and improve Refueling outage safety.

  • The Korean Government has proceeded petroleum gas pipeline construction business since 2014 for rural districts. The operating pressure of petroleum gas pipeline are from 25kPa to 75kPa which are different from that of natural gas pipeline. Petroleum gas pipeline pressure is ten or forty times higher than natural gas operating pressure. For this reason, petroleum gas pipeline has higher probability of accident occurrence from massive gas leakage. Korea Gas Safety Corporation begins to development excess flow valves and their performance testing equipment since 2017. The excess flow valves stop the gas flow when a overflow happened in gas pipeline. The excess flow valves are generally not installed in main pipeline, because that may block massive gas supply. So, the valves are installed in starting points of branch pipes. According to the number of house and amount of gas use, a shut-off point of exxcess flow valve is determined called as Trip Flow. The trip point is the most important thing of excess flow valve, so, it is required a equipment testing the performances of excess flow valve as trip point.

  • In this paper, the strength safety of a fuse cock main body has been analyzed by the finite element method. The stress and displacement behaviour characteristics have been investigated for thickness variations at the region of (T) between a ball valve and a fuse cock safety connector. The FEM analyzed results recommend that the optimized thickness at the region of (T) is from 1.55mm to 1.6mm for the supplied gas pressure of 1.5~3.5MPa. This is considered for the optimized strength safety and light weight of a fuse cock main body.

  • For the liquid rocket engine, the gas generator oxidizer shut-off valve which supplies the oxidizer to a gas generator needs structural safety under the internal pressure, which is higher than the chamber pressure. In this study, static stress analyses of the various design in the vicinity of the region where the stress is concentrated were performed for designing the lightweight valve, A lightest model of which the concentrated stress does not exceed the yield criteria has been suggested. Also, whole size effect of the valve on the concentrated stress was investigated.

  • The waterhammer occured when the pumps are started or stopped for the operation or tripped due to the power failure, the hydraulic transients occur as a result of the sudden change in velocity. The field tests of the waterhammer were carried out for PanGyo booster pumping station. The PanGyo pumuing station was installed booster pump of 6 sets and in-line pump of 2 sets. The main surge suppression device was equipped with the pump control valve and the surge relief valve as auxiliary. However, the pump control valve had not early controlled in the planned closing mode, and the slamming occurred to the valve of which abruptly closed during the large reverse flow. Because the pressure wave caused by the pump failure was superposed on the slam surge, the upsurge increased so extremely that the shaft of the valve was damaged. After the addition surge suppression device was equipped with air chamber. Further more in-line pump is needed surge suppression device that the pumping station acquired the safety and reliability for the pressure surge.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the rupture disk design(size) and application at the two phase(gas-liquid) flow by runaway reaction at batch reactor. The definition of runaway reaction is abnormally exothermic reaction by the uncontrolled cooling water or deviated operating condition. As a result, the temperature of reactor is rapidly increasing. The causes of runaway reaction are either self-heating reaction or sleeper reaction. General methods of rupture disk size or safety valve are not suitable in the runaway reaction, because of temperature and pressure increasing rapidly in the reactor and the phases of relieving fluid is 2-phase flow. This study case of the reactor incident, the depressurization system such as safety valve and vent installed, however, the system did not relieved the pressure of reactor suitably. The orifice size of the safety valve were designed too small because the size had not been considered the phenomena and character of reaction. The batch reactor design should be considered by referring to the possibility of runaway reaction proposed in this study and the size of rupture disk design method considering 2-phase flow.
