  • The effects of cooled-ECR on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions were investigated in a single cylinder HCCI diesel engine The premixed charge (gasoline or diesel) was obtained with premixing chamber and high-pressure (5.5MPa) injection system. Exhaust pressure control and cooled ECR system were used in order to reduce pressure fluctuation and to mix the exhaust gas well with the fresh intake air. The experimental results show that NOx emissions from conventional diesel engine are steeply decreased by HCCI diesel combustion with cooled-EGR in both case of gasoline and diesel premixing. But soot emissions are rapidly increased with the increase of ECR rate. The recycled exhaust gas increased the ignition delay of mixture and decreased maximum combustion pressure. HC and CO emissions of HCCI combustion are increased with ECR rate.

  • An experimental study on homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion with direct fuel injection was conducted using a single cylinder common-rail diesel engine. To improve the homogeneity of fuel-air mixture, the premixed fuel (gasoline) was injected into premixing chamber and the diesel fuel was injected into the combustion chamber as an ignition source for the gasoline premixture. The experimental results show that soot emissions were dramatically reduced with the increase of fuel premixing ratio, however incomplete products such as HC and CO increased with the increase of the premixed ratio. Earlier injection of Dl diesel fuel increased the IMEP with the decrease of HC and CO concentrations.

  • In this study, the effect of central fuel injection on a coaxial laminar $CH_{4}/air$ flame was experimented at the defined premixing condition(${\Phi}=1.90$, ${\sigma}=50/75/100%$, x/D=10). The partial premixing parameter are the equivalence ratio that total fuel is fixed at 200cc/min, the fuel split degree which means the percentage of fuel entering the outer tube to the total amount, and the mixing distance indicating the nonreactant mixture's homogeneity between inner tube top and burner exit. The object is to investigate the flame structure and chemiluminescence characteristics of laminar partial premixed flame as changing mixing parameters. The radical signal was acquired from ICCD camera and PMT. Each intensity was compared with Abel inverted value for measuring the effect of background light on the peak signal location and the intensity at central preheat zone. The results show that the peak location of each radical was broaden as the fuel split degree increasing because the mixing quality was enhanced. and $OH^{\ast}$ is a good indicator for flame front between reaction and preheat zone. At last $CH_{2}^{\ast}$ has the same tendency with $CH^{\ast}$ but a thinner reaction zone than $CH^{\ast}$ due to a rapid decay on the burned gas side.

  • Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, lab-scale gas turbine combustor to see the effect of partial premixing on unstable flame structure and Nox emission characteristics. The swirl angle is 45 deg., fuel-air mixing degrees were varied 0, 50 and 100% respectively at equivalence ratio ranging from 0.53 to 0.79. The evolution of phased-locked OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD. NOx emission characteristics were also investigated at each experimental condition. The effect of the fuel-air mixing degree on the flame structure was obtained from phase-locked $OH^*$ images. And it was obtained from local heat release characteristics that the information about the region which the combustion instability was amplified or damped. It also could be confirmed that $\sigma$ has greatly influence on NOx emission characteristics at lean regimes. It would be expected that it could provide invaluable data for understanding the mechanism of combustion instability.

  • This paper deals with an acoustic model for a lean premixed gas turbine combustor composed of three stages: premixing chamber, nozzle and flame tube. Our model is given as an acoustic transfer function whose input is a heat release rate perturbation and output is a velocity perturbation at a flame location. We have shown that the resonance frequencies are functions of three round-trip frequencies of acoustic wave in each stage, and area ratios between stages. By analyzing poles of the acoustic transfer function, we could characterize resonant frequencies and their dependency on various system parameters of a combustor. It was found that our analytic findings match with existing numerical and experimental results in literature.

  • In this paper, the study of effects of flow parameters on flame structure and NOx emission concentration was performed in co-axial. laminar partially premixed methane/air flames. Such (low parameters as equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), fuel split percentage($\sigma$), and mixing distance(x/D$\_$i/) were defined as a premixing degree and varied within ${\Phi}$=1.36∼9.52, $\sigma$=50∼100, and x/D$\_$i/=5∼20. The image of OH$\^$*/ and NOx concentration were obtained with an ICCD camera and a NOx analyzer. The flame structure observations show a categorization of partially premixed flames into three distinct flame regimes corresponding to ${\Phi}$<1.7(premixed flame structure), 1.7<${\Phi}$<3.3(hybrid structure), and ${\Phi}$>3.3(diffusion flame structure existing a luminous sooting region) at $\sigma$=75%, and x/D$\_$i/=10. As o decreases from 100% to 50%, and x/D$\_$i/ decreases, nonpremixed flame structure appear at low equivalence ratio relatively. In addition, the measured emissions for NOx rise steeply from ${\Phi}$=1.7, to ${\Phi}$=3.3, then constants ${\Phi}$>4.76. NOx emissions decrease with increase the level of premixing level. In conclusion, the main effect on flame structure and NOx production was at first equivalence ratio(${\Phi}$), and next fuel split percentage($\sigma$), and finally mixing distance(x/D$\_$i/).

  • Experimental investigations were conducted to understand the multi-staged combustion characteristics of a swirl-stabilized double cone premixed burner nozzle used for industrial gas turbines for power generation. Multi-staged combustion is implemented by injecting the fuel through the existing manifold of the side slots as well as through the apex of the cone with two fuel injection angles which are slanted or axial. NOx and CO emissions, and wall temperature distributions were measured for various fuel distributions and operating conditions. Results show that NOx emissions are decreased when the fuel distribution to the apex is 3% of the total amount of fuel, which is due to more uniform fuel distribution inside the nozzle, hence less hot spots at the flame. NOx emissions are rather increased when the fuel distribution to the apex is 8% of the total amount of fuel for axial fuel injection by occurrence of flash back in premixing zone of burner.

  • By depicting the transfer of heat and combustion reaction to take place within thin gas layers close to the propellant surface burning in a steady-state fashion, a mathematical equation has been deduced to describe the burning rate of solid propellant as a function of initial grain temperature and chamber pressure. It has been also assumed that chemical reaction could take place in premixing-diffusing zone but were carried out mainly in the reaction-flame zone. All these phenomena taken place in each zone of combustion have been assumed to be steady-state. In the present investigation, the equation, γ=$\kappa$$.$(1/R(T(sub)i+C))(sup)n$.$exp(-E(sub)a/R(T(sub)i+C))(P/z) is being presented and it is compared with experimental data. The proposed model has been tested and evaluated vis-a-vis strand burner data for three different propellants based on CTPB, and it has been found that the deviation of the computed burning rates from the measured rates ranged up to 2%.

  • The effects of premixed fuels(diesel or n-heptane) and exhaust gas recirculation on combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a DI diesel engine were experimentally investigated. To improve homogeneity of fuel-air mixture in the conventional diesel engine, the premixed fuel is injected by high pressure(5.5 MPa) into the premixing chamber prior to engine cylinder, And several additional systems such as an EGR system, air heating system and back pressure control system were equipped in the DI diesel engine. The results showed that premixed fuel-air mixture undergoes typical HCCI combustion prior to the combustion of DI diesel fuel. The ignition timing of HCCI combustion is delayed by application of EGR, and it also shows that HCCI combustion can be controlled by an EGR.

  • A premixing effect for the properties of carbon black-filled rubber compounds was investigated using biblends of natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and butadiene rubber (BR). Degree of mixing of the biblends was controlled by preblending time of 0.0, 2.5, and 5.0 min. Mooney viscosities of the compounds decreased by increasing the preblending time. Of three carbon black-filled compounds of NR/SBR, NR/BR, and SBR/BR compounds, only the SBR/BR blends showed a specific cure characteristics depending on the preblending time. For the bound rubber composition, the NR content was higher than SBR and BR. The difference in the rubber composition ratio of the bound rubber became smaller with increasing the preblending time. Physical properties of the vulcanizates such as hardness, modulus, tensile property, abrasion loss, and tans were also compared. Differences in properties of the compounds were discussed with miscibility of the dissimilar rubbers and degree of mixing.
