  • Vibration of a hydraulic excavator's body and boom occurs when the boom quickly stops after upward or downward motion. The main objective of this research is to present an idea of suppressing the vibration. Three parameters which affect the vibration are defined and analyzed thoroughly and a heuristic method suppressing the vibration is presented in this paper. Experimental results show that the proposed method works very well.

  • A new cleaning robot system for live-line tension insulator string was developed to prevent an insulator failure, which can have severe effects on national security as well as national industry and economy. The robot moves along the insulator string using the clamps installed on its two moving frames. Especially, unlike the existing cleaning robots using jets of water or water/air, the robot system adopts dry cleaning method using a rotating brush and a circular motion guide. This robot system has control architecture consisting of a master control unit and two slave control units. We confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

  • Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping hale been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

  • In order to eliminate position errors existing at the steady state in the motion control of robotic manipulators, a new fuzzy control algorithm is proposed using three variables, position error, velocity error and integral of position errors as input variables of the fuzzy controller. Three dimensional look-up table is used toreduce the computational time in real-time control, and a technique reducing the amount of necessary memory is introduced. Simulation and experimental studies show that the position errors at the steady state are decreased more than 90% compared to those of existing fuzzy controller when the proposed fuzzy controller is applied to the 2 axis direct drive SCARA robot manipulator.

  • Tension control performance is very important in high-speed printing machine. One of the major factors that effect to tension control performance is the process of roll changing. Even if the turret arm moves during roll changing process and the span length of the unwinding system varies, it is customary to neglect it in motion and tension control and to consider it as a disturbance. In this paper, its effect is modeled nonlinearly and compared with linear model, and an effect of an infeeder dancer is analyzed under the condition with no unwinder dancer. We verify the performance of the proposed method via simulation in the high-speed printing machine.

  • Recently, we have developed a linear brushless DC motor(LBLDCM) with high speed and precise position control performance to apply it to the semiconductor assembly and inspection machinery. It is composed of double side alignment by two armature-stator pairs and each pair is consist of a moving armature with 8 poles by 3 phase coils and a stator with rare earth permanent magnet (Nd-Fe-B) arrays. Through the thrust force analysis on a simplified and whole model of the suggested LBLDCM by an Electromagnetic FEM solver, skew angle of magnet arrays to reduce the thrust force ripple and the winding conditions of the armature is designed. From experimental results, the user's requirements was satisfied and we confirmed distinctly that the repeatable accuracy less than a micron of the linear motion can be obtained at high speed by the developed LBLDCM. This is owing to directly drive the work without the gear train.

  • An asymmetrical cross-coupled compensator to improve the contouring performance is proposed. This is a refinement of the structure suggested by Koren. The position loop is closed with a proportional controller as in the uncoupled system. An additional input term proportional to the component of the contour error along the corresponding axis is included. The controller gains are chosen to give an appropriate frequency response and an optimum range for the damping ratio. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is studied by means of digital simulations of the dynamics of the drives and the controller for 4 types of command trajectories: straight line contour, cornering contour, circular contour, elliptic contour. Substantial improvement in contouring performance is obtained for a range of contouring conditions.

  • This paper presents the dynamic modeling and control methodology to arrest structural deflections of industrial robotic manipulators featuring elastic members retrofitted with surface bonded pizoelectric actuators and sensors. The cynamic modeling is accomplished by employing a variational theorem, prior to developing a finite element formulation. This finite element formulation accounts for both original robot member elements and also bonded piezoelectric material elements. The governing equation of motion is then modified by condensing the electric potential vectors and subsequently two different negative velocity feedback controllers are established; a constant-gain feedback controller and a constant- amplitude feedback controller. By adopting a Model P50 articulating industrial robot manufactured by Gerneral Electric Company, conputer simulations are underlaken in order to demonstrate superior performance characteristics to be accrued from this proposed methodology such as smaller deflections at the end-effector.

  • Existing long range piezoelectric motors with friction based transmission mechanisms are limited by the axial load capacity. To overcome this problem, a new linear piezoelectric motor using one piezoelectric actuator combined with a novel stepping mechanism is reported in this paper. To obtain both long range and fine accuracy, dual positioning control strategy consisting of coarse positioning and fine positioning is used. Coarse positioning is used for long travel range by accumulating motion steps obtained by piezoelectric actuator. This is followed by fine positioning where required accuracy is obtained by fine motion displacement of piezoelectric actuator. This prototype is able to provide resolution of 20 nanometers and withstand a maximum axial load of 300N. At maximum load condition, the positioner can move forward to a travel distance of 5mm at a maximum speed of 0.4 mm/sec. This design of nanopositioner can be used in applications for ultra precision positioning and grinding operations where high axial force capacity is required.

  • The quality of a precision product, in genera, relies on the accuracy and precision of its manufacturing and inspection process. In many cases, the level of precision in the manufacturing and inspection system is also dependent on the positioning capability of tool with respect to the workpiece in the process. Recently the positioning accuracy level employed for some of precision product has reached the level of submicron and long range of motion is required. For example, for 1GDRM lithography, 20nm accuracy and 300nm stroke needs. This paper refers to the lithography stage especially fine stage. In this study, for long stroke and high accuracy, the dual servo system is proposed. For the coarse actuator, LDM(Linear DC Noter) is used and for fine or VCM is used ...
