It is essential to estimate the vehicle localization for an autonomous safety driving. In particular, since LIDAR provides precise scan data, many studies carried out to estimate the vehicle localization using LIDAR and pre-generated map. The road marking always exists on the road because of provides driving information. Therefore, it is often used for map information. In this paper, we propose to generate the Gaussian mixture map based on road-marking information and localization method using this map. Generally, the probability distributions map stores the single Gaussian distribution for each grid. However, single resolution probability distributions map cannot express complex shapes when grid resolution is large. In addition, when grid resolution is small, map size is bigger and process time is longer. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the road marking. On the other hand, Gaussian mixture distribution can effectively express the road marking by several probability distributions. In this paper, we generate Gaussian mixture map and perform vehicle localization using Gaussian mixture map. Localization performance is analyzed through the experimental result.
GPS provides the positioning solution in most areas of the world. However, the position error largely occurs in the urban area due to signal attenuation, signal blockage, and multipath. Although many studies have been carried out to solve this problem, a definite solution has not yet been proposed. Therefore, research is being conducted to solve the vehicle localization problem in the urban environment by converging sensors such as cameras and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). In this paper, the precise vehicle localization using 3D LIDAR (Velodyne HDL-32E) is performed in the urban area. As there are many tall buildings in the urban area and the outer walls of urban buildings consist of planes generally perpendicular to the earth's surface, the outer wall of the building meets at a vertical corner and this vertical corner can be accurately extracted using 3D LIDAR. In this paper, we describe the vertical corner extraction method using 3D LIDAR and perform the precise localization by combining the extracted corner position and GPS/DR information. The driving test was carried out in an about 4.5 km-long section near Teheran-ro, Gangnam. The lateral and longitudinal RMS position errors were 0.146 m and 0.286 m, respectively and showed very accurate localization performance.
This paper presents a method for precisely localizing and parking of bimodal trams. In order to gam an automatically driving system for bimodal trams, precise up-to-date localization, velocity recognition, distance to next station and precise parking location estimation functions are required. This paper proposes a system consisting of control device, steering device, sensor input equipment, driving system, tachometer, vehicle-side sensors, magnetic markers and magnetic sensors. The tram recognizes the precise location via magnetic markers containing information. Parking position and precise distance calculation is embodied by a tachometer. The vehicle-side sensors are used to assure safe station approaching and parking magnetic markers provide improvement of precision while tram parking. This paper provides a system realizing localization and precise parking and afterwards the automatic drive test results are reported and analyzed.

The precise identification of vehicle positions, known as the vehicle localization problem, is an important requirement for building intelligent vehicle ad-hoc networks (VANETs). To solve this problem, two categories of solutions are proposed: stand-alone and data fusion approaches. Compared to stand-alone approaches, which use single information including the global positioning system (GPS) and sensor-based navigation systems with differential corrections, data fusion approaches analyze the position information of several vehicles from GPS and sensor-based navigation systems, etc. Therefore, data fusion approaches show high accuracy. With the position information on a set of vehicles in the preprocessing stage, data fusion approaches is used to estimate the precise vehicular location in the local map building stage. This paper proposes an efficient local map building scheme, which increases the accuracy of the estimated vehicle positions via V2V communications. Even under the low ratio of vehicles with communication modules on the road, the proposed local map building scheme showed high accuracy when estimating the vehicle positions. From the experimental results based on the parameters of the practical vehicular environments, the accuracy of the proposed localization system approached the single lane-level.
An autonomous driving system based on a precise digital map is developed. The system is implemented to the Hyundai's Tucsan fuel cell car, which has a camera, smart cruise control (SCC) and Blind spot detection (BSD) radars, 4-Layer LiDARs, and a standard GPS module. The precise digital map has various information such as lanes, speed bumps, crosswalks and land marks, etc. They can be distinguished as lane-level. The system fuses sensed data around the vehicle for localization and estimates the vehicle's location in the precise map. Objects around the vehicle are detected by the sensor fusion system. Collision threat assessment is performed by detecting dangerous vehicles on the precise map. When an obstacle is on the driving path, the system estimates time to collision and slow down the speed. The vehicle has driven autonomously in the Hyundai-Kia Namyang Research Center.
For the safe driving of autonomous vehicles, accurate position estimation is required. Generally, position error must be less than 1m because of lane keeping. However, GPS positioning error is more than 1m. Therefore, we must correct this error and a map matching algorithm is generally used. Especially, road marking intensity map have been used in many studies. In previous work, 3D LIDAR with many vertical layers was used to generate a local intensity map. Because it can be obtained sufficient longitudinal information for map matching. However, it is expensive and sufficient road marking information cannot be obtained in rush hour situations. In this paper, we propose a localization algorithm using an accumulated intensity local map. An accumulated intensity local map can be generated with sufficient longitudinal information using 3D LIDAR with a few vertical layers. Using this algorithm, we can also obtain sufficient intensity information in rush hour situations. Thus, it is possible to increase the reliability of the map matching and get accurate position estimation result. In the experimental result, the lateral RMS position error is about 0.12m and the longitudinal RMS error is about 0.19m.
To ensure the safety of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or autonomous vehicles, it is important to recognize the vehicle position, and specifically, the increased accuracy of the lateral position of the vehicle is required. In recent years, the quality of GPS signals has improved a lot and the price has decreased significantly, but extreme urban environments such as tunnels still pose a critical challenge. In this study, we proposed stable and precise lane recognition and tracking methods to solve these two issues via fusion of AVM images and vehicle sensor data using an extended Kalman filter. In addition, the vehicle's lateral position recognition and the abnormal state of RTK GPS were determined using this approach. The proposed method was validated via actual vehicle experiments in urban areas reporting multipath and signal disconnections.
Localization is very important for the autonomous navigation of Unmanned Ground Vehicles; however, it is difficult that they have a precise Inertial Navigation System(INS) sensor, especially Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle(SUGV). Moreover, there are some condition such as denial of global position system(GPS), GPS/INS integrated system is not robust. This paper proposes the estimation algorithm with optical flow sensor and INS. Being compared with previous researches, the proposed algorithm is suitable for skid steering vehicles. We revised the measurement model of previous research for the accuracy of side direction position. Experimental results were performed to verify the algorithm, and the result showed an excellent performance.
The position of autonomous driving vehicle is basically acquired through the global positioning system (GPS). However, GPS signals cannot be received in tunnels. Due to this limitation, localization of autonomous driving vehicles can be made through sensors mounted on them. In particular, a 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system is used for longitudinal position error correction. Few feature points and structures that can be used for localization of vehicles are available in tunnels. Since lanes in the road are normally marked by solid line, it cannot be used to recognize a longitudinal position. In addition, only a small number of structures that are separated from the tunnel walls such as sign boards or jet fans are available. Thus, it is necessary to extract usable information from tunnels to recognize a longitudinal position. In this paper, fire hydrants and evacuation guide lights attached at both sides of tunnel walls were used to recognize a longitudinal position. These structures have highly distinctive reflectivity from the surrounding walls, which can be distinguished using LIDAR reflectivity data. Furthermore, reflectivity information of tunnel walls was fused with the road surface reflectivity map to generate a synthetic reflectivity map. When the synthetic reflectivity map was used, localization of vehicles was able through correlation matching with the local maps generated from the current LIDAR data. The experiments were conducted at an expressway including Maseong Tunnel (approximately 1.5 km long). The experiment results showed that the root mean square (RMS) position errors in lateral and longitudinal directions were 0.19 m and 0.35 m, respectively, exhibiting precise localization accuracy.
In this paper, we propose an underwater localization scheme through the fusion of an inertial navigation system (INS) and the received signal strength (RSS) of electromagnetic (EM) wave sensors to guarantee precise localization performance with high sampling rates. In this localization scheme, the INS predicts the pose of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) by dead reckoning at every step, and the RF sensors corrects the UUV position functions using the Earth-fixed reference when the UUV is located in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN). The localization scheme and state modeling were conducted in the extended Kalman filter framework, and UUV localization experiments were conducted in a basin environment. The scheme achieved reliable localization accuracy during long-term navigation, demonstrating the feasibility of exploiting EM wave attenuation as Earth-fixed reference sensors.
