One of the major obstacles confronted in promoting the rainwater harvesting is the concerns of acid rain and heavy metals. Although there are many data concerning the quality of rainwater precipitation for the study of acid rain, the study on the quality of stored rainwater has been limited. In this study, we monitored the quality of stored rainwater at Galmoe middle school, where a rainwater harvesting system is installed and in use for more than two years. We measured water quality parameters such as pH, Electro Conductivity(EC), Dissolved Oxygen(DO), and some metals (aluminium (Al), chromium(Cr), manganese(Mn), zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), arsenic(As), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb)). The monitoring period was during one year from September 9th 2003 to August 5th 2004. It was observed that the average pH of stored rainwater is neutral. DO is similar to tap water and EC is lower than tap water. Metal Concentrations are within the concentration specified in Drinking Water Quality Standard. Overall, the stored rainwater quality is good enough for sundry use and there's no threat of acid rain and air pollution, if the rainwater harvesting system is well designed and maintained.
This study is to suggest a few efficient ways of rainwater utilization, through monitoring and analyzing 143 rainwater storage systems and 110 artificial recharge systems, which are installed in the recommended facilities by law, among the rainwater harvesting systems in Jeju Island. In the case that catchment facilities are damaged, rainwater could be contaminated by leaves and debris so that the rates of rainwater usages come to be lower. It is possible that contaminated rainwater could contaminate artificial recharge wells or rainwater discharging out of the rainwater harvesting system could result in flood and damage for the downgradient area. For maintaining high quality of rainwater and increasing rainwater utilization rate, it is necessary to install screening facilities and purification plant functioning precipitation and filtration. Also, in order to efficiently preclude the overflowing rainwater exceeding storage capacity, it is recommended to associate rainwater storage tanks with artificial recharge well or infiltration trench facilities.

This study investigated seasonal characteristics of the particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere and rainwater quality in Busan, South Korea, and evaluated the seasonal effect of PM10 concentration in the atmosphere on the rainwater quality using multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration of PM in the atmosphere and meteorological observations(daily precipitation amount and rainfall intensity) are obtained from automatic weather systems (AWS) by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) from March 2020 to August 2020. Rainwater samples (n = 216, 13 rain events) were continuously collected from the beginning of the precipitation using the rainwater collecting device at Pukyong National University. The samples were analyzed for pH, EC (electrical conductivity), water-soluble cations(Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, and NH4+), and anions(Cl-, NO3-, and SO42-). The concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere was steadily measured before and after the precipitation with a custom-built PM sensor node. The measured data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation analysis to identify relationships between the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere and rainwater quality. In spring, the daily average concentration of PM10 (34.11 ㎍/m3) and PM2.5 (19.23 ㎍/m3) in the atmosphere were relatively high, while the value of daily precipitation amount and rainfall intensity were relatively low. In addition, the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere showed a significant positive correlation with the concentration of water-soluble ions (r = 0.99) and EC (r = 0.95) and a negative correlation with the pH (r = -0.84) of rainwater samples. In summer, the daily average concentration of PM10 (27.79 ㎍/m3) and PM2.5 (17.41 ㎍/m3) in the atmosphere were relatively low, and the maximum rainfall intensity was 81.6 mm/h, recording a large amount of rain for a long time. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant correlation between the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere and rainwater quality in summer.

This study examines the washing effect of precipitation on particulate matter (PM) and the rainwater quality (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), water-soluble ions concentration). Of six rain events in total, rainwater samples were continuously collected every 50 mL from the beginning of the precipitation using rainwater collecting devices at Pukyong National University, Busan, South Korea, from March 2020 to July 2020. The collected rainwater samples were analyzed for pH, EC, and water-soluble ions (cations: Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+, and anions: Cl-, NO3-, SO42-). The concentrations of particulate matter were continuously measured during precipitation events with a custom-built PM sensor node. For initial rainwater samples, the average pH and EC were approximately 4.3 and 81.9 μS/cm, and the major ionic components consisted of NO3- (5.4 mg/L), Ca2+ (4.2 mg/L), Cl- (4.1 mg/L). In all rainfall events, rainwater pH gradually increased with rainfall duration, whereas EC gradually decreased due to the washing effect. When the rainfall intensities were relatively weak (<5 mm/h), PM10 reduction efficiencies were less than 40%. When the rainfall intensities were enhanced to more than 7.5 mm/h, the reduction efficiencies reached more than 60%. For heavy rainfall events, the acidity and EC, as well as ions concentrations of initial rainwater samples, were higher than those in later samples. This appears to be related to the washing effect of precipitation on PM10 in the atmosphere.
Access to clean and affordable water is one of the fundamental human rights because water is essential to life and a foundation for socioeconomic development of any country in the world. Despite the efforts to secure water supply in Burundi, the amount of water supplied by public utilities does not meet the demand of the population because population keeps increasing with fluctuation of weather conditions. This study selected north Bujumbura that is a sprawling new residential area in the western part of Burundi as a case to investigate the potential of rainwater harvesting in meeting water demand of the country. Based on a long-term average monthly precipitation in the region, the rainwater harvesting potential was assessed as a function of roof sizes, number of households, and runoff coefficients of roof materials. For the entire region of north Bujumbura, the current water supply capacity of the local water company combined with the rainwater harvesting potential resulted in the water surplus of $468,604.1m^3/yr$. Although three communes among them still showed water deficit in dry season, they still got help from rainwater to relieve their water shortage. This suggests that at the regional scale, proper storages and water quality control for harvestable rainwater could contribute to relieving the regional water shortage and allow the population growth.
The purpose of this study was to invesitigate relationship between rainfall water quality and precipitation characteristic during the accumulated rainfall and rainless period. As the results of the analysis, rainfall water quality was improved in the rainfall duration. Correlation coefficients between rainwater quality and accumulated rainfall were $0.88{\sim}0.99$ except $Cl^-$. and that between rainless period and initial rainfall water quality were $0.62{\sim}0.75$. During the Asian dust event, concentration of the turbidity, BOD and electric conductivity were high. Therefore, it shows that the rainfall water quality is effected by atmospheric conditions before the rainfall events.
This study analyzed the effect of meteorological factors on the concentration of PM10 (particulate matter 10) in the atmosphere and the variation of rainwater quality using multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere was continuously measured during eleven precipitation events with a custom-built PM sensor node. A total of 183 rainwater samples were analyzed for pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and water-soluble cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+) and anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-). The data has been analyzed using two multivariate statistical techniques (principal component analysis, PCA, and Pearson correlation analysis) to identify relationships among PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere, meteorological factors, and rainwater quality factors. When the rainfall intensity was relatively strong (> 5 mm/h, rainfall type 1), the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere showed a negative correlation (r = -0.55, p < 0.05) with cumulative rainfall. The PM10 concentration increased the concentration of water-soluble ions (r = 0.25) and EC (r = 0.4), and decreased the pH (r = -0.7) of rainwater samples. However, for rainfall type 2 (< 5 mm/h), there was no negative correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and cumulative rainfall and no statistically significant correlation between the PM10 concentration in the atmosphere and rainwater quality.
In this study, rainfall runoff characteristics according to peak concentration were analyzed using the water quality and flow data in the Geumho river, and the direction of nonpoint source management such as monitoring and management period by pollution source was derived. Peak Water Quality Concentration is the concept that utilizes the extreme value as the concentration of non-point pollution control standard with the highest water quality in the rainwater runoff. Using this method, the evaluation factors such as cumulative precipitation(total precipitation), peak water quality concentration, cumulative precipitation up to peak water quality concentration, time to peak water quality concentration, and EMC to peak water quality concentration were examined and long- Rainfall runoff characteristics of nonpoint sources were analyzed. The results of the analysis suggested proper monitoring and management method to manage nonpoint source.

Precipitation samples were collected at Kosan, Cheju Island over a period of 6 months An automatic rain sampler was manufactured domestically and installed at Kosan station. All samples were collected on a weekly basis. Samples were analyzed for S $O_4$$^{=}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , C $l^{[-10]}$ , N $H_4$$^{+}$, N $a^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Ca^{++}$, $Mg^{++}$, and pH and specific conductivity. The quality analysis of rain sample data were performed based on ion balance and specific conductivity. The pH of rain samples ranged between 4.6 to 6.6. Bicarbonate ion concentration were included in ion balance and specific conductivity calculations. The sum of cation concentrations were slightly greater than the sum of anion concentrations. Calculated specific conductivity was greater than measured specific conductivity. The most probable explanations for this discrepancy is "an anion too low or anion missing." Two criteria were used to identify outliners. They are 1) the difference between the sum of anion concentrations and cation concentration is more than 50 $\mu$eq./1 and 2) the difference between calculated and measured specific conductivity is more than 25%. Chemical analysis from several samples did not satisfy these quality control criteria. Volume weighted average concentrations were calculated. Dominant free acids in rain samples were N $a^{+}$, C $l^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{=}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ ions in order of abundance. Non-seasalt sulfate comprises 76% of total sulfate.sulfate.e.ate.e.

To investigate the characteristics of rainwater in Daegu area, parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, TOC, TIC and TC were analyzed on 34 samples from January to December 2005. Results revealed that higher values were measured in winter than in summer. Furthermore samples that originated from industrial and commercial areas had higher chemical concentrations and conductivity as compared with those from residential and reference areas. Seldom acid-rain occurrence was recorded(27.2%) as compared with non-acid precipitation(72.8%) incidence. Also higher organic carbon fraction(TOC) was detected(72.5%) than inorganic form(TIC)(27.5%) in terms of component ratio with TC. During frequent rainfalls, the concentration of chemicals was decreased to a degree. Conversely, lower rate of rainfall gave out higher chemical values. Thereby the improvement of air qualify in 2005 compare with 2003 report was influenced by the environment authorities' efforts to reduce air pollutions and various factors by the depression of the region's economy.
