Craniomaxillofacial injuries produce complex wound environments involving various tissue types and treatment strategies. In a clinical setting, care is taken to properly irrigate and stabilize the injury, while grafts are molded in an attempt to maintain physiological functionality and cosmesis. This often requires multiple surgeries and grafts leading to added discomfort, pain and financial burden. Many of these injuries can lead to disfigurement and resultant loss of system function including mastication, respiration, and articulation, and these can lead to acute and long-term psychological impact on the patient. A main causality of these issues is the lack of an ability to spatially control pre-injury morphology while maintaining shape and function. With the advent of additive manufacturing (three-dimensional printing) and its use in conjunction with biomaterial regenerative strategies and stem cell research, there is an increased potential capacity to alleviate such limitations. This review focuses on the current capabilities of additive manufacturing platforms, completed research and potential for future uses in the treatment of craniomaxillofacial injuries, with an in-depth discussion of regeneration of the periodontal complex and teeth.
Purpose: Some patients who have undergone surgery due to lumbar disc herniation still complain of leg pain and other abnormal sensations. Therefore, the study examined the effects of the neurodynamics on pain and other abnormal nerve sensations in post-operated patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods: The participants of this study comprised 20 adults (10 males and 10 females) who were diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation. The subjects were classified into two groups of 10 patients each in the lower extremity neurodynamics (LEN) and lumbar stabilization exercise (LSE) groups. Each intervention was applied twice a day for one week and was composed of two different exercise patterns; one was applied by a therapist, and the other was performed by the patients themselves. The data were analyzed using assessment methods of Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), Toronto clinical neuropathy scoring system (TCNSS), Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) test, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scale. Results: Significant differences in TCNSS, DITI, ODI scale were observed between the LEN and LSE group (p<0.01). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the SSR test between pre and post-treatment (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results indicated that neurodynamics treatment is effective in pain reduction and abnormal sensations, such as leg muscle cramps, in post-operated patients with lumbar disc herniation.

In this paper, an algorithm to detect steps in hemiplegic patients using a 3-axis accelerometer a紅ached on the trunk was proposed. The proposed algorithm consisted of the signal pre-processing, the step detector, the classification of steps and the calculation of stride time. Two FIR band-pass filters were designed and steps were measured by the combination of filtered signals in the vertical and the anteroposterior directions. In addition, the classification of steps and the calculation of stride time were computed by using the detected steps and lateral signals. For the experiment, fourteen hemiplegic patients were participated and the linear accelerations of the trunk and foot switch signals were measured synchronously. To evaluate the system performance, the detected steps and initial contacts by the foot switch were compared. The average error between the steps and initial contacts was 0.024ms and the difference of the average stride time was 0.01s. Finally, all gait events were detected exactly. Results showed that the accelerometry could use for the gait evaluation in clinical rehabilitation therapies.
Objectives : This report describes 142 prescriptions related to the use of Astragalus mainly blended from Dongeuibogam. Methods : The following conclusions were drawn through investigations on the pre-scriptions that use Astragalus as a key component. Results : Prescriptions that Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata was taken as a monarch drug are utilized for 31 therapeutic purposes, for example, cold disease, stool disease, child disease. In particular, 17.3% of prescriptions appear in the chapter of cold. Prescriptions that utilize Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata as the main component are used in the treatment of cold, diarrhea and child disease, Bi syndrome due to pathogenic wind, cold and damp and they are also used for treating 55 different types of disease. Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata is used in pathogenic factors such as wind, cold and dampness and used in pathology related to the kidney and spleen and stomach system. The dosage of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata is 2pun(about 0.75g) to 5don(about 18.8g), however 1don(about 3.75g)~1don 5pun(about 5.63g) has been taken the most for clinical application. Conclusions : Gangbutang and Ijungtang are the most useful base prescriptions which use the Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata as the main ingredient.
Extracorporeal circulation leads to functional disorder and structural damage of organs, especially hematologic and pulmonary system, mainly by sequestration of neutrophils and deposition of macrophages at lung. Then, proteases are secreted, which insult vascular basement membrane of pulmonary capillary and alveolar septa of the lung. Among these, the most important protease at lung is elastase, because major component of lung is elastin. For prevention of lung injury, inactivators or antidotes to elastase should be necessary and Alpha 1-Proteinase Inhibitor is the elastase inactivator. Clinical experimental study was carried out to investigate the immediate postoperative change of serum Alpha 1-PI level following cardiopulmonary bypass for 20 heart cases [congenital 16 cases, acquired 4 cases] and 10 control [subtotal gastrectomy] cases. Also preliminary study was performed for 31 cases of open heart patients. The results were as follows: l. Immediate postoperative serum levels of Alpha 1-PI was significantly decreased at open heart surgery group [P< 0.005], but not decreased at control group. 2. There were no significant difference in change of serum Alpha 1-PI level between and membrane and bubble oxygenator group.Z 3. There were no significant difference in changes of serum Alpha 1-PI level between CHD and AHD. Alpha 1-PI is consumed at lung during cardiopulmonary bypass and increase after operation compensatedly and protect multiple organic damage especially lung. Therefore, Alpha 1-PI can be indicator for evaluation of prevention and treatment of pump-lung syndrome.
Background: Subjects with frozen shoulder (FS) might not be comfortable with vigorous physical therapy. Clinical trials assessing the effect of graded motor imagery (GMI) in FS are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of GMI as an adjunct to conventional physiotherapy in individuals with painful FS. Methods: Twenty subjects aged 40-65 years having stage I and II of FS were randomly divided into two study groups. The conventional physiotherapy group (n = 10) received electrotherapy and exercises while the GMI group (n = 10) received GMI along with the conventional physiotherapy thrice a week for 3 weeks. Pre- (Session 1) and post- (Session 9) intervention analysis for flexion, abduction, and external rotation range of motion (ROM) using a universal goniometer, fear of movement using the fear avoidance belief questionnaire (FABQ), pain with the visual analogue scale, and functional disability using the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI) was done by a blinded assessor. Results: Statistically significant difference was seen within both the groups for all the outcomes. In terms of increasing abduction ROM as well as reducing fear of movement, pain, and functional disability, the GMI group was significantly better than control group. However, both groups were equally effective for improving flexion and external rotation ROM. Conclusions: Addition of GMI to the conventional physiotherapy proved to be superior to conventional physiotherapy alone in terms of reducing pain, kinesiophobia, and improving shoulder function for stage I and II of FS.
In the nuclear medicine imaging, quality control (QC) process using quadrant bar phantom is fundamental aspect of evaluating the spatial resolution. In addition, QC process of gamma camera is performed by daily or weekly. Recently, Monte Carlo simulation using the Geant4 application for tomographic emission (GATE) is widely applied in the pre-clinical nuclear medicine field for modeling gamma cameras with pixelated cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor detector. In this study, we modeled a pixelated CdTe semiconductor detector and quadrant bar phantom (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm bar thicknesses) using the GATE tool. Similarity analysis based on correlation coefficients and peak signal-to-noise ratios was performed to compare image qualities for various source to collimator distances (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 cm) and collimator lengths (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 cm). To this end, we selected reference images based on collimator length and source to collimator distance settings. The results demonstrate that as the collimator length increases and the source to collimator distance decreases, the similarity to reference images improves. Therefore, our simulation results represent valuable information for the modeling of CdTe-based semiconductor gamma imaging systems and QC phantoms in the field of nuclear medicine.
This study was a qualitative investigation into the food security and food variety among the rural elderly. For the qualitative data collection, nineteen elderly people who lived in Yangpyeong-gun were interviewed individually. Food security and variety was evaluated based on accessibility and affordability. The participants seemed to have difficulty preparing their own meals and eating with their families or others. The frequency of vegetable intake was found to be high, as vegetables were available through cultivation. However, in terms of diversity, the intake of meat and milk, which are sources of protein and calcium, was found to be significantly low. This has to do with very poor physical accessibility. A lack of nutrition education was identified as the biggest reason for not following dietary therapy despite having a pre-existing disease condition. Therefore, for the elderly in Yangpyeong-gun, it is suggested that a basic nutrition policy for food supply that can increase their actual intake is more essential than education on cooking and nutrients. Moreover, periodic nutrition education or a regular counseling system for dietary therapy through local public health centers may help improve the health of the elderly.

In the quest for advancing diabetes diagnosis, this study introduces a novel two-step machine learning approach that synergizes the probabilistic predictions of Logistic Regression with the classification prowess of Random Forest. Diabetes, a pervasive chronic disease impacting millions globally, necessitates precise and early detection to mitigate long-term complications. Traditional diagnostic methods, while effective, often entail invasive testing and may not fully leverage the patterns hidden in patient data. Addressing this gap, our research harnesses the predictive capability of Logistic Regression to estimate the likelihood of diabetes presence, followed by employing Random Forest to classify individuals into diabetic, pre-diabetic or nondiabetic categories based on the computed probabilities. This methodology not only capitalizes on the strengths of both algorithms-Logistic Regression's proficiency in estimating nuanced probabilities and Random Forest's robustness in classification-but also introduces a refined mechanism to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Through the application of this model to a comprehensive diabetes dataset, we demonstrate a marked improvement in diagnostic precision, as evidenced by superior performance metrics when compared to other machine learning approaches. Our findings underscore the potential of integrating diverse machine learning models to improve clinical decision-making processes, offering a promising avenue for the early and accurate diagnosis of diabetes and potentially other complex diseases.
Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the kidney is an extremely rare cystic malignant tumor with a poor prognosis that occurs in the pelvicalyceal system. Pre-opeartive diagnosis is very difficult because the tumor's clinical and imaging features are nonspecific. Here we report a case of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma arising from the horseshoe kidney in a 69-year-old male, focusing on CT findings. The tumor was a complex cystic mass with irregular wall thickening, multifocal calcifications, and septa and progressed to pseudomyxoma peritonei postoperatively.
