Strength and Microstructure of Reactive Powder Concrete Using Ternary Pozzolanic Materials

  • To consider the practicality and economic feasibility of developing reactive powder concrete (RPC), the strength and microstructure properties of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials (silica fume, blast furnace slag, fly ash) were investigated in this study. Through the investigation, it was found that the compressive strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was increased significantly compared to that of the original RPC containing silica fume only. A considerable improvement in the flexural strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was found, and then the utilization of a structural member subjected to bending was expected. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) revealed that the microstructure of RPC was denser using the ternary pozzolanic materials than the original RPC.

  • In this work, pozzolanic activities of various waste materials were compared with those of well-known pozzolanic materials. Uncondensed and densified silica fume, two ASTM class F fly ashes with different calcium contents, and bentonite powder, ceramic powder obtained from wash basin, and waste glass wool, which can possibly possess pozzolanic property were chosen for comparison. Drop in electrical conductivity at 40℃ saturated lime solution was measured for each materials. The amount of Ca(OH)2 decomposed from cement paste at 450~500℃ was also measured used to evaluate pozzolanic activity. The 28 day compressive strength were used to observe the mechanical property enhanced by various waste materials.

Evaluation on Reactivity of By-Product Pozzolanic Materials Using Electrical Conductivity Measurement (전기전도도 시험방법을 활용한 산업부산물 포졸란재료의 반응성 평가)

Undensified and densified silica fume, ASTM class F and class C fly ash, and metakaolin were chosen as well-known pozzolanic materials, and bentonite powder, ceramic powder obtained from wash basin, and waste glass wool, which can possibly possess pozzolanic property, were chosen for comparison. Drop in electrical conductivity at $40^{\circ}C$ saturated lime solution was measured for each materials. The amount of Ca(OH)2 decomposed from cement paste at $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ was also measured to evaluate pozzolanic activity. The 28 day compressive strength were used to observe the mechanical property enhanced by incorporation of various waste materials. According to the experimental results, using "difference between maximum conductivity value and conductivity value at 4 hour" was found to be a reasonable approach to determine pozzolanic activity of a material. Pozzolanic activity measured using electrical conductivity correlates very well with that measured using the amount of Ca(OH)2 remained in the cement paste. Relatively good agreement was also found with electrical conductivity and 28 day compressive strength. It was found that electrical conductivity measurement can be used to evaluate pozzolanic activity of unknown materials.

  • The Salt attack is one of the primary factors that cause the deterioration of durability in steel reinforced concrete structure. And to depreciate the deterioration from the Salt attack in concrete structure, pozzolanic materials are used widely in recent years. In this study, experiments about the resistance of chloride infiltration of concrete according to the replacement rations of Activated Hwangtoh and various pozzolanic materials(silica fume, fly ash, blast furnace slag and non Activated/Activated Hwangtoh) are performed and the results of this study were shown as follows; 1) As the replacement ratios of Activated Hwangtoh were getting higher, the strength of concrete was increased and in case of various pozzolanic materials, strength of Activated Hwangtoh in specimen was better than that of fly ash, blast furnace slag and non Activated Hwangtoh. 2) As the replacement ratios of Activated Hwangtoh were getting higher, the resistance of chloride infiltration of concrete was increased and in case of various pozzolanic materials, silica fume is better than any other pozzolanic materials and Activated Hwangtoh was better than that of fly ash, blast furnace slag and non Activated Hwangtoh.

  • This study discussed the influence of mixtures and curing conditions on the development of strength and microstructure of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials. Through pilot experiment, various RPC was manufactured by adding single or mixed ternary pozzolanic materials such as silica fume, blast furnace slag and fly ash by mass of cement, up to 0~65%, and cured by using 4 types of method which are water and air-dried curing at $20^{\circ}C$, steam and hot-water curing at $90^{\circ}C$. The results show that the use of ternary pozzolanic materials and a suitable curing method are an effective method for improving development of strength and microstructure of RPC. The unit volume of cement was greatly reduced in RPC with ternary pozzolanic materials and unlike hydration reaction in cement, the pozzolanic reaction noticeably contributes to a reduction in hydration heat and dry shrinkage. A considerable improvement was found in the flexural strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials, and then the utilization of a structural member subjected to bending was expected.   • Concrete is the most widely used material of construction. Concrete gained the popularity as a construction material due to the easy availability of its component materials, the easy formability, strength and rigidity upon setting and curing.In construction industry, strength is the primary criterion in selecting a concrete for a particular application. Now a days, the substantial amount of waste materials, containing the properties of the Pozzolana, is being generated from the major industries; and disposal of such industrial wastes generated in abundance is also a serious problem from the environmental and pollution point of view. On this backdrop, efforts are made by the researchers for exploring the possible utilization of such waste materials in making the sustainable construction material. The present paper reports the experimental investigations to study the strength characterization of concrete made from the pozzolanic waste materials. For this purpose, the Pozzolanic materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag were used as a cement replacing materials in conjunction with ordinary Portland cement. Equal amount of these materials were used in eight trial mixes with varying amount of cement. The water cement ratio was also varied. The chemical admixture was also added to improve the workability of concrete. The compressive strengths for 7, 28, 40 and 90 days' were evaluated whereas the flexural and tensile strengths corresponding to 7, 28 and 40 days were evaluated. The study corroborates that the pozzolanic materials used in the present investigation along with the cement can render the sustainable concrete.

Effect of the Pozzolanic Cement on Concrete Strengths with Recycled Aggregate (재생골재를 사용한 콘크리트의 강도에 미치는 포졸란 시멘트 효과)

  • Due to the tendency of increase in demolished-concrete produced by alteration and deterioration of concrete structures, recycling of those demolished-concrete is necessary to solve the exhaustion of natural aggregate, in order to save resources and protect environment, especially being want of resources in Korea. For this purpose, concrete made with the pozzolanic cement and recycled aggregate was tested for compressive and tensile strength. The pozzolanic cement was a mixture of OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and pozzolans such as fly ash, other siliceous materials and early rapid hardening cement(ERC). It was found that the compressive strength of the pozzolanic cement was enhanced when 0.75% of ERC was dozed, as compared with OPC mortar. It was also shown that compressive and tensile strength of concrete with recycled aggregate and pozzolanic cement were higher than those of concrete with crushed stones and OPC. It was concluded that the pozzolanic cement influenced on the increase of concrete strengths with recycled aggregate.

  • The use of pozzolanic materials in concrete mixtures can enhance the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. By reactions with pozzolanic materials and calcium hydroxide in cement matrix, calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) increases and calcium hydroxide decreases in cement matrix of concrete. Consequently, the volume of solid materials increases. The pozzolanic particles also fill spaces between clinker grains, thereby resulting in a denser cement matrix and interfacial transition zone between cement matrix and aggregates; this lowers the permeability and increases the compressive strength of concrete. Moreover, the total contents of alkali in concrete are reduced by replacing cements with pozzolanic materials; this prevents cracks due to alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). In this study, nanosilica is incorporated in cement pastes. The differences of microstructural compositions between the hydrated cements with and without nanosilica are examined using nanoindentation, XRDA and $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.

Shrinkage and Creep of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Using Pozzolanic Materials (포졸란 재료를 사용한 재생골재 콘크리트의 건조수축 및 크리프)

  • In this study, the experiments of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and special blended slag powder or diatom calcined at 650$\circ$ were performed on compressive strength, shrinkage and creep. The compressive strength of concrete with recycled aggregate and pozzolanic materials were higher than that of concrete with crushed stone and OPC. On the other hand, the shrinkage and creep of concrete with recycled aggregate and pozzolanic materials was smaller than that of concrete with crushed stone and OPC. Futhermore, the shrinkage and creep of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and special blended slag powder was a little decreased that of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and diatom. Relationship between compressive strength and creep coefficient was shown to the linear relation like as $\sigma$$_{c}$= -30CF+404.4.
