  • Power quality promotion has received increasing attention because of the wide use of semiconductor devices in recent decades. Reactive power regulation is crucial to ensuring the stable operation of power systems. In this study, a continuous reactive power controller, which is referred to as a parallel-connected magnetic energy recovery switch (MERS), is developed to regulate voltage or power factor in power grids. First, the operating principle is introduced, and a mathematical model is built. Second, a new control method for restraining current harmonics and the peak voltages of capacitors is presented. Using the proposed method, the MERS shows a wide range in terms of reactive power compensation. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated through computer simulations and experiments. Unlike STATCOMs, the proposed controller entails low losses, adopts a small dc capacitor, and offers ease of use.

  • This paper proposes a high-efficiency supercapacitor charger. Conventional two-switch forward converter can be used for charging supercapacitors. However, the efficiency of conventional converters is low because of their switching losses. This study presents a high-efficiency two-switch forward converter for supercapacitor chargers. The proposed converter improves power efficiency by 4 %, from 89 % to 93 %. The proposed converter has the advantages of reduced switch voltage stresses and minimized circulating current when compared to other converter topologies. The performance of the proposed converter is evaluated by experimental results using a 300 W prototype circuit for a 54-V, 35-F supercapacitor bank.

  • The applications of the pulse power technology are expanding and the necessity of a large current switch as a core component of pulsed power is increasing. A trigger gap switch composed of three electrodes was fabricated and the discharge characteristics were studied according to the change of the pressure, the shape of the main electrode, and the gap distance when the trigger pulse was applied. As a main result, the stable operation range was confirmed through the discharge inception voltage according to the gap distance and electric field analysis was performed in the same structure to confirm the electric field value of the discharge inception voltage.

  • These days, widespread use of sensitive loads and distributed generators makes static transfer switch (STS) an essential component in power circuits to achieve a good power quality for AC Grids. In case of a short-circuit fault, previous STS cannot break the fault current. However, the proposed STS has the capability of breaking it quickly as a circuit breaker. Also if there are power quality problems such as Sag/Swell, the proposed STS can quickly transfers the load to the good quality source. Furthermore it is proved that the transfer time of the proposed STS is within one half of period of 3-phase source frequency regardless of the type of load. It is anticipated that the proposed STS may be utilized to realize many stable and reliable AC grid systems.

  • This paper proposes a full wave mode ZVT-PWM boost converter. The converter with the auxiliary switch in a full wave mode makes possible soft switching operation of all switches including the auxiliary switch whereas the auxiliary switch is turned off with hard switching in the conventional converter. Therefore, the proposed converter reduces the turn-off switching loss and switching noise of the auxiliary switch without additional passive and/or active elements and high power density system can be realized.

  • The carrier-based space vector pulse width modulation(SVPWM), which is considered as highly simple and efficient PWM technology, can be also used in multilevel inverters. The method was originally designed for the two-level inverter and developed to the diode clamped multilevel inverter structure. however it may be noted that it also cause bad switch utilization in cascaded multilevel inverter. This paper introduces an improved carrier-based SVPWM scheme, which is fully suitable for cascaded multilevel inverter topologies because it can achieve the optimized switch utilization through the redistribution of the triangular carrier waves considering leg voltage redundancies while having the advantages of the conventional carrier-based SVPWM. Using simulation and experimental results, the superior performance of new PWM method is shown.

  • A Boost Power Factor Correction (PFC) Converter employing Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) based Compound Active Clamping (CAC) technique is presented in this paper. An Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) Filer is connected at the line side of the proposed converter to suppress Electro Magnetic Interference. The proposed converter can effectively reduce the losses caused by diode reverse recovery. Both the main switch and the auxiliary switch can achieve soft switching i.e. ZVS under certain condition. The parasitic oscillation caused by the parasitic capacitance of the boost diode is eliminated. The voltage on the main switch, the auxiliary switch and the boost diode are clamped. The principle of operation, design and simulation results are presented here. A prototype of the proposed converter is built and tested for low input voltage i.e. 15V AC supply and the experimental results are obtained. The power factor at the line side of the converter and the converter efficiency are improved using the proposed technique.

  • This paper, we presents a RF protection technique of antenna switch by improving the power handling capability in worst case environment mode for mobile phone applications without critical payment of circuit performances such as insertion loss, isolation and ACBV (AC breakdown voltage). By applying a additional capacitive path located in front of the antenna in cell-phone, it performs the effective reduction of input power in high voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) condition. Under the all-path off condition which causes a high VSWR, it achieved 37.7dBm power handling level as high as 5.7dB compared to that of conventional one at 2GHz. In addition, insertion loss and isolation performances were 0.31dB and 42.72dB at 2 GHz, respectively which were almost similar to that of the conventional circuit. The proposed antenna switch was fabricated in 130nm CMOS SOI technology.

  • In this paper, a low power antenna switch controller IC is designed using a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) CMOS technology. To improve power handling capability and harmonic distortion performance of the antenna switch, the proposed antenna switch controller provides 3-state logic level such as +VDD, GND, and -VDD for the gate and body of switch of FETs according to decoder signal. By employing input-coupled current ring oscillator and hardware efficient level shifter, the proposed controller greatly reduces power consumption and hardware complexity. It consumes 135 ${\mu}A$ at a 2.5 V supply voltage in active mode, and occupies $1.3mm{\times}0.5mm$ in area. In addition, it shows fast start-up time of 10 ${\mu}s$.
