Osmotic power is to produce electric power by using the chemical potential of two flows with the difference of salinity. Water permeates through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentration feed solution to a high concentration draw solution due to osmotic pressure. In a pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) process, river water and wastewater are commonly used as low salinity feed solution, whereas seawater and brine from the SWRO plant are employed as draw solution. During the PRO process using wastewater effluent as feed solution, PRO membrane fouling is usually caused by the convective or diffusive transport of PRO which is the most critical step of PRO membrane in order to prevent membrane fouling. The main objective of this study is to assess the PRO membrane fouling reduction by pretreatment to remove organic matter using coagulation-UF membrane process. The experimental results obtained from the pretreatment test showed that the optimum ferric chloride and PAC dosage for removal of organic matter applied for the coagulation and adsorption process was 50 mg/L as FeCl3 (optimum pH 5.5). Coagulation-UF pretreatment process was higher removal efficiency of organic matter, as also resulting in the substantial improvement of water flux of PRO membrane.

CRUD (chalk river unidentified deposits) is a porous material deposited on the surface of nuclear fuel during nuclear power plant operation. The CRUD is composed of metal oxides, such as iron, nickel, and chromium. It is essential to investigate the effects of the CRUD layer on the wall heat transfer between the nuclear fuel surface and the coolant in the event of a nuclear accident. CRUD only negatively affects the temperature of the nuclear fuel due to heat resistance because the effects of the CRUD layer on two-phase boiling heat transfer are not considered. In this study, the physical property models for the porous CRUD layer were developed and implemented into the SPACE code. The effects of boiling heat transfer models on the peak cladding temperature and quenching were investigated by simulating a reflood experiment. The calculation results showed some positive effects of the CRUD layer.

Radioactive materials are released into the air and deposited on the surface soil after a nuclear accident. Radionuclides deposited in soil are transported by precipitation to nearby environments and contaminate the surface water system. Basic data on surface watershed and soil erosion models have been collected and analyzed to evaluate the behavior of radionuclides deposited on surface soil after a nuclear accident. Data acquisition and analysis in aquatic environment were performed to investigate the physical characteristics and variation of biota in rivers and lakes of the Nakdong river area near the Wolsong nuclear power plant. For these purposes, a digital map, and hydrological, water quality and biota data were gathered and a systematic database (DB) was constructed in connection with them. Constructed aquatic DB will be supplied and used in surface watershed and soil erosion models for investigation of long-term movement of radionuclides in adsorptive form in surface soil. Finally, basic data and established models will be utilized for general radiological impact assessment in aquatic environment.
To obtain the dynamic mechanical properties, fracture modes, energy and brittleness characteristics of Furong Baijiao coal rock, the dynamic impact compression tests under 0, 4, 8 and 12 MPa confining pressure were carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. The results show that failure mode of coal rock in uniaxial state is axial splitting failure, while it is mainly compression-shear failure with tensile failure in triaxial state. With strain rate and confining pressure increasing, compressive strength and peak strain increase, average fragmentation increases and fractal dimension decreases. Based on energy dissipation theory, the dissipated energy density of coal rock increases gradually with growing confining pressure, but it has little correlation with strain rate. Considering progressive destruction process of coal rock, damage variable was defined as the ratio of dissipated energy density to total absorbed energy density. The maximum damage rate was obtained by deriving damage variable to reflect its maximum failure severity, then a brittleness index BD was established based on the maximum damage rate. BD value declined gradually as confining pressure and strain rate increase, indicating the decrease of brittleness and destruction degree. When confining pressure rises to 12 MPa, brittleness index and average fragmentation gradually stabilize, which shows confining pressure growing cannot cause continuous damage. Finally, integrating dynamic deformation and destruction process of coal rock and according to its final failure characteristics under different confining pressures, BD value is used to classify the brittleness into four grades.
This study addresses the escalating issue of worldwide hydrogen gas accidents, which has seen a significant increase in occurrences. To comprehensively evaluate the risks associated with hydrogen, a two approach was employed in this study. Firstly, a qualitative risk assessment was conducted using the bow-tie method. Secondly, a quantitative consequence analysis was carried out utilizing the areal locations of hazardous atmospheres (ALOHA) model. The study applied this method to two incidents, the hydrogen explosion accident occurred at the Muskingum River power plant in Ohio, USA, 2007 and the hydrogen storage tank explosion accident occurred at the K Technopark water electrolysis system in Korea, 2019. The results of the risk assessments revealed critical issues such as deterioration of gas pipe, human errors in incident response and the omission of important gas cleaning facility. By analyzing the cause of accidents and assessing risks quantitatively, the effective accident response plans are proposed and the effectiveness is evaluated by comparing the effective distance obtained by ALOHA simulation. Notably, the implementation of these measures led to a significant 54.5% reduction in the risk degree of potential explosions compared to the existing risk levels.

For a hydro turbine electricity generation system in river or bay, a venturi system could be applied to accelerate flow speed at the inlet of the turbine system in a flow field. In this study, a steady flow simulation was conducted to understand the effect of venturi system on the acceleration of current speed at the inlet of a hydro turbine system. According to the continuity equation, the flow speed is inversely proportional to the cross-section area in a conduit flow; however, it would be different in an open region because the venturi system would be an obstruction in the flow region. As the throat area is 1/5 of the inlet area of the venturi, the flow velocity is accelerated up to 2.1 times of the inlet velocity. It is understood that the venturi system placed in an open flow region gives resistance to the upcoming flow and disperses the flow energy around the venturi system. The result of the study should be very important information for an optimum design of a hydro turbine electricity generation system.
For the system benefit optimization by considering risk or reliability from a multiple reservoir system using the Monte Carlo technique, many stochastically generated inflow series have to be used for the system analysis. In this study, the stochastically generated inflow series for the multiple reservoir system operation are preprocessed according to the considered system objectives and operating time periods. Through this procedure, several representative inflow series which have discrete probability levels and operation horizons are selected among the thousands of generated inflows. Then a deterministic optimization technique is applied to the power energy estimation from the Han River Reservoirs System which considers five reservoirs in the study. It took much lower computational requirements then using the original Monte Carlo Technique, even though estimated result was almost similar.
Performance of the raw water-source heat pump system with a thermal storage tank has been analyzed in winter season. The raw water is transferred through the multi-regional water supply system from Han river. Raw water is large temperature difference resource compared with groundwater. Although the raw water temperature drops to $0.6^{\circ}C$ due to the heavy snowfall and the severe cold in late January and early February, 2010, the system has been normally operated without any trouble this winter. The unit COP and system COP considered all pump power consumption were estimated based on the second-by-second data of the all sensors. The monthly averaged unit COP and system COP are 3.37 and 2.76 respectively with $1.4^{\circ}C$ of raw water in January, 3.55 and 2.89 with $1.6^{\circ}C$ raw water in February, 3.82 and 3.15 with $5.4^{\circ}C$ raw water in March. The performance of the system are increased with raw water temperature, and the COPs are higher than the water-to-air heat pump system using relatively high temperature raw water from Daecheong reservoir because the water-to-water system was operated on the full load condition and was stopped when the thermal storage tank was full of the high temperature water.

Due to the complexities of the real-world system, a water resource management program has to deal with various types of data. It appears that management personnel who has to use the program usually suffers from the technical burdens of handling large amount of data and understanding the optimization theory when they try to interpret the results. By combining the capabilities of database technology and modeling technique with optimization procedure we can develop a reliable decision supporting tool for multi-reservoir operation planning, which yields operating schedule for each dam in a river basin. We introduce two special data handling methodology for the real world application. First, by treating dams, hydro-electric power generating facilities and demand sites as separate database tables, the proposed data handling scheme can be applied to general water resource system in Korea. Second, by assigning variable names using predetermined key words, we can save searching time for identifying the moaning of the variables, so that we can quickly save the results of the optimization run to the database.
Dual frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) is an imaging sonar that has been used for numerous fisheries investigations in a diverse range of freshwater and marine environments. The main purpose of DIDSON is fish counting, fish sizing, and fish behavioral studies. DIDSON records video-quality data, so processing power for handling the vast amount of data with high speed is a priority. Therefore, a semiautomated analysis of DIDSON data for fish counting, sizing, and fish behavior in Echoview (fisheries acoustic data analysis software) was accomplished using testing data collected on the Rakaia River, New Zealand. Using this data, the methods and algorithms for background noise subtraction, image smoothing, target (fish) detection, and conversion to single targets were precisely illustrated. Verification by visualization identified the resulting targets. As a result, not only fish counts but also fish sizing information such as length, thickness, perimeter, compactness, and orientation were obtained. The alpha-beta fish tracking algorithm was employed to extract the speed, change in depth, and the distributed depth relating to fish behavior. Tail-beat pattern was depicted using the maximum intensity of all beams. This methodology can be used as a template and applied to data from BlueView two-dimensional imaging sonar.
