  • As power systems grow more complex and power demands increase, the need of underground transmission system is increasing gradually. But it is very difficult and high in cost to construct new ducts and/or tunnels for power cables in metropolitan areas. HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cable can carry very high current densities with strongly reduced conductor loss and allow high power transmission at reduced voltage. Therefore HTS cable can transfer more power to be moved in existing ducts, which means very large economical and environmental benefits. A development project for a 22kV class HTS cable is ongoing at a research centers, and the cable manufacturer in Korea. In this paper, we carried out investigation for application of 22kV class HTS cable in Korean utility networks. The results show that the HTS cable is applicable to replace IPB in pumping-up power plant, withdrawal line in distributed generation, withdrawal line in complex power plant, and conventional under ground cable. Finally, as the cost of HTS wire and refrigeration drops, the technical and economical potential of HTS cable is evaluated positively.

  • Recently, a spectrum sensing technique employing the maximum value of a received power spectrum as a test statistic has been presented in the literature for the purpose of detecting a wireless microphone signal in TV bands This detects the presence of a primary user by comparing the test statistic with some threshold, which depends on the background noise power level as well as a target false alarm rate. Therefore its performance may deteriorate when the noise power uncertainty occurs. As a means to mitigate this difficulty, we present a spectrum sensing strategy adopting the ratio of the maximum and the minimum value of the power spectrum as a test statistic and analyze its performance of spectrum sensing.

  • A planetary gear assembly is a key component to combine and/or split a power from the source. With a planetary gear assembly, a continuously variable unit extends its capacity by means of power bra nching mechanism. Power branching with one planetary gear assembly and one continuously variable unit is categorized into 12 basic types. Each type represents peculiar power transmitting characteristics. Additionally, a multi-mode (range) continuously variable transmission can be designed with accompanying clutches. A multi-mode continuously variable transmission changes the path through which the source power is transmitted. Each path has its own features, such as high efficiency. In this paper, some design principles are examined such as, criteria to guarantee the minimum power efficiency, and constraints to guarantee the smooth mode shift after discussing well-known features of multi-mode M mathematically.

  • Computers and automated manufacturing processes in industry are very susceptible to voltage sags and surges. The need for greater power reliability makes the end-users to use the uninterruptible power supply and other electronic power conditioning means to maintain the stable voltage. In this paper, a single-phase buck ac-ac converter for Custom Power Applications is presented. The presented converter uses IGBT's as switching module and maintains the stable voltage through PWM technology in spite of the input voltage sags and load rejections. In this paper, the operation characteristics of the power converter at steady state are illustrated using PSPICE simulations.

  • As power grids are integrated into one big umbrella (i.e., Smart Grid), communication network plays a key role in reliable and stable operation of power grids. For successful operation of smart grid, interoperability and security issues must be resolved. Security means providing network system integrity, authentication, and confidentiality service. For a cyber-attack to a power grid system, which may jeopardize the national security, vulnerability of communication infrastructure has a serious impact on the power grid network. While security aspects of power grid network have been studied much, security mechanisms are rarely adopted in power gird communication network. For security issues, strict timing requirements are defined in IEC 61850 for mission critical messages (i.e., GOOSE). In this paper, we apply security algorithms (i.e., MD-5, SHA-1, and RSA) and measure their processing time and transmission delay of secured mission critical messages. The results show the algorithms satisfying the timing requirements defined in IEC 61850 and we observer the algorithm that is optimal for secure communication of mission critical messages. Numerical analysis shows that SHA-1 is preferable for secure GOOSE message sending.

  • Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology is now recognized as an efficient means of transferring power without physical contact. However, frequency detuning will greatly reduce the transmission power and efficiency of a WPT system. To overcome the difficulties associated with the traditional frequency-tracking methods, this paper proposes a Direct Phase Control (DPC) approach, based on the Second-Order Generalized Integrator Phase-Locked Loop (SOGI-PLL), to provide accurate frequency-tracking for WPT systems. The DPC determines the phase difference between the output voltage and current of the inverter in WPT systems, and the SOGI-PLL provides the phase of the resonant current for dynamically adjusting the output voltage frequency of the inverter. Further, the stability of this control method is analyzed using the linear system theory. The performance of the proposed frequency-tracking method is investigated under various operating conditions. Simulation and experimental results convincingly demonstrate that the proposed technique will track the quasi-resonant frequency automatically, and that the ZVS operation can be achieved.

  • Torrefaction technologies convert assorted biomass feedstocks into energy-concentrated, carbon neutral fuel that is economically transported and easily ground for blending with fossil coals at numerous power plants around the world without needs to retrofit. Utilization of torrefied biomass in conventional electric generating units may be an increasingly attractive alternative for electricity generation as aging power plants in the world need to be upgraded or improved. This paper examines the economic feasibility of torrefaction in different scenarios by modeling torrefaction plants producing 136,078 t/year (150,000 ton/year) biocoal from wood and corn stover. The utilization of biocoal blends in existing coal-fired power plants is modeled to determine the demand for this fuel in the context of emerging policies regulating emissions from coal in the U.S. setting. Opportunities to co-locate torrefaction facilities adjacent to corn ethanol plants and coal-fired power plants are explored as means to improve economics for collaborating businesses. Life cycle analysis was conducted in parallel to this economic study and was used to determine environmental impacts of converting biomass to biocoal for blending in coal-fired power plants as well as the use of substantial flows of off-gasses produced in the torrefaction process. Sensitivity analysis of the financial rates of return of the different businesses has been performed to measure impacts of different factors, whether input prices, output prices, or policy measures that render costs or rewards for the businesses.

  • This paper has dealt with the design methods and the analysis of frequency characteristics for the power splitters with ferrite toroids, which are extensively used in CATV and/or MATV systems. The theoretical design methods and frequency characteristics of the prototype Wilkinson's 2-way power divider have been reviewed in lumped-element circuits form. On the basis of the design theory of the prototype Wilkinson's power divider, the method compensating of the prototype Wilkinson's power divider has been proposed by means of adding matching transformers. Thus, it has been shown that the theoretical frequency characteristics of the compensated power splitter are improved drastically in comparison with the prototype Wilkinson's power divider. Furthermore, the practical measurements of the frequency characteristics for the fabricated circuits show agreements with the theoretical results, and hence, the validity of the proposed design and analysis methods has been confirmed.

  • In this paper a maximum power point tracking(MPPT) techniques for power of PV(photovoltaic) systems are presented using boost converter for a connected single phase inverter. On the basic principle of power generation for the PV module, algorithms for maximum power point tracking are described by utilizing a boost converter to adjust the output voltage of the PV module. Based on output power of a boost converter, single phase inverter uses predicted current control to control four IGBT's switch in full bridge. Furthermore a low cost control system for solar energy conversion using the DSP is developed, based on boost converter to adjust the output voltage of the PV module. The effectiveness of the proposed inverter system is confirmed experimentally and by means of simulation. Finally, experimental results confirm the superior performance of the proposed method.

  • Station Blackout(SBO) event means the complete loss of alternating current(AC) electrical power to the essential & nonessential switchgear buses in a nuclear power plants. Since many safety systems in nuclear power plants depend upon alternative current power, the SBO event could be an important contributor to damage of reactor core. Therefore, the SBO events have been considered as a very important safety issues in a nuclear power plants. In this paper, as evaluating the design characteristics of offsite & emergency power systems, an acceptable minimum SBO duration is calculated. And it is presented that the design method for alternative AC(AAC) sources to cope with the SBO events.
