  • The accurate estimation of leak rate through cracks is crucial in applying the leak before break (LBB) concept to pipeline design in nuclear power plants. Because of its importance, several programs were developed based on the several proposed flow models, and used in nuclear power industries. As the flow models were developed for a homogeneous pipe material, however, some difficulties were encountered in estimating leak rates for bimaterial pipes. In this paper, a flow model is proposed to estimate leak rate in bimaterial pipes based on the modified Henry-Fauske flow model. In the new flow model, different crack morphology parameters can be considered in two parts of a flow path. In addition, based on the proposed flow model, a program was developed to estimate leak rate for a crack with linearly varying cross-sectional area. Using the program, leak rates were calculated for through-thickness cracks with constant or linearly varying cross-sectional areas in a bimaterial pipe. The leak rate results were then compared and discussed in comparison with the results for a homogeneous pipe. The effects of the crack morphology parameters and the variation in cross-sectional area on the leak rate were examined and discussed.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of commercial fuel cell (rated capacity 1000W) with the help of resistive load and output power variation with change in H2 flow rate and calculate the maximum power point (MPP) of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) while changing AC and DC load respectively. The factors influencing the output power of a fuel cell are hydrogen flow rate, cell temperature, and membrane water content. The results show that when the H2 flow rate is changed from 11, 13, and 15 Lpm, MPP is increased from lower to higher flow rate. The power of the fuel cell is increased at the rate of 29% by increasing the flow rate from 11 to 15 lpm. This study will allow small-scale industries and residential buildings (in remote or inaccessible areas) to characterize the performance of PEMFC. Furthermore, fuel cell helps in reducing emission in the environment compared to fossil fuels. Also, fuel cells are ecofriendly as well as cost effective and can be the best alternative way to convert energy.

  • The effects of etch parameters on dry etching of BLT thin films were investigated with ICP etch system in $Cl_2$/Ar and $BCl_2/Cl_2$/Ar gas. The etch rate and etch selectivity of BLT films were examined as a function of gas concentration, ICP power, bias power, and pressure. The maximum etch rates of 191.1 nm/min was obtained at the mixed etch condition of $BCl_3(20%)/Cl_2$/Ar, 700 W ICP RF power, 12 mTorr pressure and 400 W substrate RF power. As ICP power and rf power increased, the etch rate of BLT increased. As pressure increased, the etch rate of BLT decreased. The changes of radicals in both $Cl_2$/Ar and $BCl_3/Cl_2$/Ar plasma were measured with using optical emission spectroscopy (OES).

  • Amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide(a-Si1-xCx : H) films have been prepared by the rf sputtering using a silicon target in a gas mixture of Argon and methane with varying methane gas flow rate(fCH) in the range of 1.5 to 3.5 sccm at constant Argon flow rate of 30sccm and rf power in the range of 3 to 6 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The effects of methane flow rate and rf power on the structure and optical properties of a-Si1-xCx : H films have been analysed by measuring both the IR absorption spectrum and the UV transmittance for the films. With increasing the methane flow rate, the optical band gap(Eg) of a-Si1-xCx : H films increases gradually from 1.6eV to the maximum value of 2.42eV at rf power of 4 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$, which is due to an increases in C/Si ratio in the films by an significant increase in the number of C-Hn bonds. As the rf power increases, the number of Si-C and Si-Hn bonds increases rapidly with simultaneous reduction in the number of C-Hn bonds, which is associated with an increase in both degree of methane decomposition and sputtering of silicon. The effects of rf power on the Eg of films are considerably influenced by the methane flow rate. At low methane flow rate, the Eg of films decreased from 2.3eV to 1.8eV with the rf power. On the other hand, at high methane flow rate, that of films increased slowly to 2.4eV.

  • To study the basic research of the lightning parameters for power system operation, LPATS(Lightning Positioning and Tracking System) has been introduced since 1995 in KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation). We have developed the lightning parameters analysis program which can produce accumulative magnitude distribution of lightning current and IKL map by LPATS data. We obtained the various statistical distributions of lightning current parameters since 1996 by the lightning analysis program for the pertinent insulation design. In this paper, we describe the LPATS system in KEPCO, the statistical distribution of lightning current parameters and the IKL(Isokeraunic Level) map from 1996 to 1998. And the compared results between the calculated LFOR(lightning flashover rate) and the observed rate are also described.

  • The government mandates gradually zero energy building and Photovoltaic power generation systems installed in buildings are emerging as the most realistic alternative to increase the independence rate of building energy. In this study, we propose a method to reduce the power consumption of households by increasing the PV capacity of balconies and applying the method used the charged electric power stored in batteries after sunset. In order to evaluate the electric power energy savings of the residential BESS, a balcony PV 1.2 kW and a battery pack 2 kWh were installed for 9 houses in 4 apartments in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The BESS is charged when the balcony PV is generated electric power, and when solar power generation is finished, it supplies power to the electric appliances connected to the load. As a result of installing the solar PV module 1.2 kW and 2 kWh class BESS for 3 households located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, the average electric power consumption saving rate was 40%. The reduction in electricity consumption in the case of zero generation surplus power by maximizing the utilization rate of BESS has been improved to about 53%. Therefore, in order to increase the self-sufficiency rate of electric energy in apartment houses, it is effective to increase the solar photovoltaic capacity of the balcony and apply the residential BESS. In the future, it is believed that the balcony PV and home BESS will play a key role in achieving mandatory zero-energy housing.

  • The failure prediction and preventive maintenance for the equipment of nuclear power plant area using reliability-centered maintenance have been grown. On the other hand, the maintenance for power distribution system consists of time-based maintenance mainly. In this paper, the new maintenance algorithms for power distribution system are developed considering reliability indices. First of all, Time-varying failure rates are extracted from data accumulated at KEPCO using exponential distribution function and weibull distribution function. Next, based on the extracted failure rate, reliability for real power distribution system is evaluated for applying the effective maintenance algorithm which is the analytic method deciding the maintenance point of time and searching the feeder affecting the specific customer. Also the algorithm deciding the maintenance priority order are presented based on sensitivity analysis and equipment investment plan are analyzed through the presented algorithm at real power distribution system.

  • When providing flexible data transmission for future CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) cellular networks, problems arise in two aspects: transmission rate. This paper has proposed an approach to maximize the cellular network capacity by combining the genetic transmission rate allocation and a rapid power control algorithm. We present a genetic chromosome representation to express call drop numbers and transmission rate to control mobile's transmission power levels while handling their flexible transmission rates. We suggest a rapid power control algorithm, which is based on optimal control theory and Steffenson acceleration technique comparing with the existing algorithms. Computer simulation results showed effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm Conclusively, our proposed scheme showed high potential for increasing the cellular network capacity and it can be the fundamental basis of future research.

  • The hot corrosion properties of heat-resistant steels were investigated in an oxidation atmosphere including artificial ash and sulfur dioxide. The heat-resistant steels of T22, T92, T122, T347HFG, Super304H and HR3C were evaluated at 620, 670 and $720^{\circ}C$ for 400 hours. The relationship between the corrosion rate and the temperature followed a bell-shaped curve with a peak rate at around $670^{\circ}C$. The corrosion rates showed a decreasing tendency as the chrome contents of these steels increased from 2.15 wt.% to 24.5 wt.%, and austenitic steels had a lower corrosion rate than ferritic steels. Sulfidation by $SO_2$ as well as molten salt corrosion also had an effect on the total corrosion rate, especially showing an increase in the corrosion rate in ferritic steels. Regardless of the chrome content in the steels and irrespective of the test temperature, the corrosion scale was composed of an outer oxide and an artificial ash mixed layer, a middle oxide layer and inner sulfide, and a mixed oxide layer. As the chrome content increased, the proportion of chrome oxide in the corrosion scale increased. Before spalling of the corrosion scale, voids and cracks were initiated in the sulfide and the mixed oxide layer or at the interface with the substrate.
