  • The effect of a ceramic ball inclusion on densification behavior of a metal powder compact was investigated under cold isostatic pressing, pressureless sintering and hot isostatic pressing. To simulate those processes, proper constitutive models were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Measured density distributions of metal powder compacts were also compared with finite element results and showed the same trend with simulated results. Residual stress distributions were calculated by finite element analysis to study the effect of ceramic ball inclusions with different thermal expansion coefficients. The higher residual stress was observed in a metal powder compact when the difference between thermal expansion coefficients for a ceramic ball and metal powder became larger. Samples produced by Wing showed more uniform density distributions and lower residual stresses compared to those by sintering after cold isostatic pressing. For various sizes of ceramic ball inclusions, densification and deformation of powder compacts were also studied during hot isostatic pressing.

  • Oxidations of metal generate large quantity of thermal and light energies but no toxic pollutants, so that metals with high calorific values, such as beryllium, boron, aluminum, magnesium, and lithium, are possible to be used as clean fuels instead of fossil fuels. However, they are so explosive due to very high oxidation rates that they should be stabilized by their surface passivation with oxides, organics and inorganics. For reasonable use of energetic metal particles as solid fuel, therefore, some detail information, such as thermal properties, preparation and passivation methods, and application area, of the energetic metals is introduced in this manuscript.

  • The low-cycle fatigue performance and fracture of the P/M Ti-Fe-Mo-Al-Nd Alloys after sintering and forging have been studied. The linear regression equation of low-cycle fatigue lifetime has been obtained; the fatigue performances are objected under two different conditions. The fatigue fracture surface is analyzed by SEM. The low-cycle fatigue behavior of the P/M titanium alloy has been discussed.

  • Dynamic characteristics of powder metal is very important to mechanical structures requiring high strength or endurance for impact loading. But owing to distinctive property of powder metal, that is relative, it has been investigated restrictively compared to static characteristics. The objectives of this study is to investigate dynamic characteristics of powder metal and compare it to a fully density material. To find the characteristics, an explicit finite element method is used for simulation of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experiment based on the stress wave propagation theory. We obtained a dynamic stress-strain relationship and dynamic behavior of powder metal, as well as the variation of material properties during dynamic deformation.

  • For the direct metal shape processing the powder feed device which is different from the widely used in rapid prototyping. is developed, The three dimensional object is shaped with the melting metal powder. The developed research has applied to rapid prototyping in ultraprecision for MEMS and medical science fields required of rapid manufacture of complex shape. The goal of this study make 3D model which has precision accuracy. Powder spreading apparatus has been more improved because that the control of powder spread is very important in layer manufacturing. It consists of the vibration motor, nozzle and tube which supplies various metal powder. This apparatus could control the spreading velocity that could control powder spreading thickness. Laser on/off switch was adapted because laser scanning velocity must be preserved constantly to prevent heat transformation of laser overheating. The error between sintered thickness md experimental one occurred by shrinkage in sintering melting process. The problem of heat transformation was solved by On/Off switching system.

  • The Application of powder metallurgy (PM) aluminum structural parts is at its early growing stage, despite of some automotive applications. The market potential for PM aluminum, however, is large. Growth is expected from the market expansion of the existing applications and new applications, including the replacements of aluminum and zinc based castings and some ferrous PM automotive parts by PM aluminum. Compared to castings, PM is an efficient mass production technology. The PM aluminum is more competitive than die casting for some automotive applications. Besides weight saving leading to performance improvement, the total cost increase for aluminum PM parts is less than 15% compared to ferrous PM automotive parts. The future is promising for PM aluminum.

  • Densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powders was investigated under cold compaction. The Cap model was proposed by using the parameters involved in the yield function for sintered metal powder and volumetric strain evolution under cold isostatic pressing. The parameters for ceramic powder can also be obtained from experimental data under triaxial compression. The Cap model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powders under cold compaction. The agreement between finite element calculations from the Cap model and experimental data is very good for metal and ceramic powder under cold compaction.

  • We studied the adsorption characteristics on the treatment process of heavy metal wastewater by using cuttle fish bones powder. When adding the 0.25% cuttle fish born powder in the heavy metal solution, $Fe^{3+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were high removed than other heavy metals as above 95%. In the solution which was adjusted to pH 5, 7 and 9, there was not observed the difference thing on the heavy metal removal rate. At test using plating wastewater treatment, adding 1%, 1.5% and 2% of the cuttle fish born powder, the heavy metal removal rate were as follows; Zn 12.5 - 37.5%, Mn 18.0 - 62.2%, Cd 36.8 -93.0%, Cu 51.4 - 97.4%, Cr 70.8 - 99.1%, Fe 87.2 - 99.3% and Pb 92.8 - 99.9%. When adding the 0.15% cuttle fish born powder and mixing for 20 minutes, the solution was happened the adsorption equability. Applied this results to the Freundlich's iso-thermal equation, we found the cuttle fish born's probability as a good adsorbent.

  • The characteristics of the laser metal deposition parameters were studied to enhance the deposition efficiency using a diode pumped disk laser. STD61 hot tool steel plate and Fe based AISI M2 alloy were used as a substrate and powder for the laser metal deposition, respectively. Among the laser metal deposition parameters the laser power, track pitch and powder feed rate were used to estimate the deposition efficiency. From the experimental results, the deposition efficiency was shown to be excellent when 1.8kW laser power 500um track pitch and 10g/min of the powder feed rate were used. For this optimal condition the average hardness of the deposition track was approximately 830HV, and this value is 30~50% better than the hardness of the commercially produced tool steel after heat treatment.
