Computational methods can be classified roughly into two parts: one is the methods based on a potential flow theory, and the other is numerical solvers(CFD) based on Navier-Stockes equation. Methods based on a potential theory are more effective than CFD when the free surface effect is considered. Especially Rankine source method seems to become widespread for simulations of wave making problems. For computations of viscous flow problems, CFD techniques have rapidly been developed and have shown many successful results in the viscous flow calculation. Present paper introduces a computational system 'WAVIS' which includes a pre-processor, potential ant viscous flow solvers and a post-processor. To validate the system, the calculated results for modem commercial hull forms are compared with measurements. It is found that the results from the system are in good agreement with the experimental data, illustrating the accuracy of the numerical methods employed for WAVIS.
A numerical hydrodynamic performance analysis of the pitch-type multibody wave energy converter (WEC) is carried out based on both linear potential flow theory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the unidirectional wave condition. In the present study, Salter's duck (rotor) is chosen for the analysis. The basic concept of the WEC rotor, which nods when the pressure-induced motions are in phase, is that it converts the kinetic and potential energies of the wave into rotational mechanical energy with the proper power-take-off system. This energy is converted to useful electric energy. The analysis is carried out using three WEC rotors. A multibody analysis using linear potential flow theory is performed using WAMIT (three-dimensional diffraction/radiation potential analysis program), and a CFD analysis is performed by placing three WEC rotors in a numerical wave tank. In particular, the spacing between the three rotors is set to 0.8, 1, and 1.2 times the rotor width, and the hydrodynamic interaction between adjacent rotors is checked. Finally, it is confirmed that the dynamic performance of the rotors slightly changes, but the difference due to the spacing is not noticeable. In addition, the CFD analysis shows a lateral flow phenomenon that cannot be confirmed by linear potential theory, and it is confirmed that the CFD analysis is necessary for the motion analysis of the rotor.

An iterative viscous-potential flow procedure has been developed and used to predict aerodynamic characteristics of automobiles in ground proximity. The method is capable of predicting the effects of separated flows. The viscous-potential flow iteration procedure provides the connection between potential flow, boundary layer and wake modules. The separated wake is modeled in the potential flow analysis by thin sheets across which exists a jump in velocity potential. The ground effect is properly accounted for by placing a body image in the potential flow calculation. The agreement between theory and experiment is good and, thus, demonstrates that the method can be used in the preliminary design stage.

The theory of the current-type electromagnetic flowmeter for a high temporal resolution was developed for two-phase flow measurements. To predict the output of the current-type flowmeter, the three-dimensional virtual potential distribution C and the newly introduced flow pattern coefficient f were derived and computed. The output of flowmeter depends on the liquid conductivity (sensitive to temperature) and flow configurations of the two-phase flow with the sinusoidal excitation over 100 Hz. The flow pattern coefficient was specially devised to separate the dependency on the flow configuration of the two-phase flow from that on the liquid conductivity which can be expressed with the calibration of single-phase flow. Using the finite difference method, the three-dimensional virtual potential distributions were computed for the electrode of finite size. By taking derivative of the virtual potential, the weight functions were evaluated and compared with existing analytic series solution for the point-electrode. There was a reasonable correspondence between the present and existing results. In addition, the flow pattern coefficients were evaluated for annular flows with various film thicknesses, and compared with the experimental results by the impedance spectroscopy. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data.

The transient nature and complex geometries of two-phase gas-liquid flows cause fundamental difficulties when measuring flow velocity using an electromagnetic flowmeter. Recently, a current-sensing flowmeter was introduced to obtain measurements with high temporal resolution (Ahn et al.). In this study, current-sensing flowmeter theory was applied to measure the fast velocity transients in slug flows. The velocity fields of axisymmetric gas-liquid slug flow in a vertical pipe were obtained using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method, and the virtual potential distributions for the electrodes of finite size were also computed using the finite volume method for simulating slug flow. The output signal prediction for slug flow was carried out from the velocity and virtual potential (or weight function) fields. The flowmeter was numerically calibrated to obtain the cross-sectional liquid mean velocity at an electrode plane from the predicted output signal. Two calibration parameters are proposed for this procedure: a flow pattern coefficient and a localization parameter. The flow pattern coefficient was defined by the ratio of the liquid resistance between the electrodes for two-phase flow with respect to that for single-phase flow, and the localization parameter was introduced to avoid errors in the flowmeter readings caused by liquid acceleration or deceleration around the electrodes. These parameters were also calculated from the computed velocity and virtual potential fields. The results can be used to obtain the liquid mean velocity from the slug flow signal measured by a current-sensing flowmeter.

This study aims to understand the antecedents and consequences of flow experience in online movie information sharing behavior of young Chinese moviegoers residing in Korea to explore a potential market. We followed the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) theory and flow theory approaches for developing measures of constructs and investigated previous related studies. This study collected 186 data from Chinses students who attend Korean university. Statistical analysis revealed that information seeking behavior and telepresence are related to online flow experience. In addition, the online flow experience affected consumer satisfaction and information sharing behavior. Flow experience also has been predicted the mediation effect between stimulus information seeking behavior, telepresence and satisfaction and information sharing behavior. Our research findings offer insights for marketers in the movie distribution business who are interested in a better understanding of the behaviors of Chinese moviegoers residing in Korea
The aerodynamic stability of orthotropic tensioned membrane structures with rectangular plane is theoretically studied under the uniform ideal potential flow. The aerodynamic force acting on the membrane surface is determined by the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics. Then, based on the large amplitude theory and the D'Alembert's principle, the interaction governing equation of wind-structure is established. Under the circumstances of single mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction equation into a system of second order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the stability of the system characteristic equation, the critical divergence instability wind velocity is determined. Finally, from different parametric analysis, we can conclude that it has positive significance to consider the characteristics of orthotropic and large amplitude for preventing the instability destruction of structures.

The purpose of the present research is to develop an efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. Some numerical results for series 60, C sub(b) =0.6, hull are presented in this paper. The wave pattern and wave resistance are computed at two Froude numbers, 0.267 and 0.304. These results are better than those of Michell's thin ship theory in comparison with measured results. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.
A submarine is optimized to operate below the water surface because it spends most of its time in a submerged condition. However, the performance in free surface conditions is also important because it is unavoidable for port departure and arrival. Generally, potential flow theory is used for seakeeping analysis of a surface ship and is known for excellent numerical accuracy. In the case of a submarine, the accuracy of potential theory is high underwater but is low in free surface conditions because of the nonlinearity near the free surface area. In this study, the seakeeping performance of a Canadian Victoria Class submarine in regular waves was investigated to improve the numerical accuracy in free surface conditions by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results were compared to those of model tests. In addition, the potential theory software Hydrostar developed by Bureau Veritas was also used for seakeeping performance to compare with CFD results. From the calculation results, it was found that the seakeeping analysis by using CFD gives good results compared with those of potential theory. In conclusion, seakeeping analysis based on CFD can be a good solution for estimating the seakeeping performance of submarines in free surface conditions.

This study aims to compare stress concentratior factors in a loaded elastic body of the infinite plate with pressure coefficients of a fluid in the potential flow. First in view of hydrodynamics, when a single elliptic cylinder in the form of a bluff body stands in the potential flow, the pressure distribution(doefficient, C$\_$p/around the elliptic cylicder which is changed according to the position(angular displacements)is theoretically analyzed and calulated; secondly, in view of theory of elasticity, when an eliptic hole which is made on a flat plate gets tension, the stress distribution(factor) around the elliptic hole which is changed according to the position(angular displacements )is theoretically(K$\_$t/) and experimentally (K$\_$e/) measured; and finally. The results are compard and examined.
