Mobilization of Heavy Metals induced by Button Mushroom Compost in Sunflower

  • This study focused on evaluating the phytoextraction of heavy metals (Co, Pb, and Zn) induced by bioaugmentation of button mushroom compost (BMC) in Helianthus annuus (sunflower). When the potential ability of BMC to solubilize heavy metals was assessed in a batch experiment, the inoculation with BMC could increase more the concentrations of water-soluble Co, Pb, and Cd by 35, 25, and 45% respectively, compared to those of non-inoculated soils. BMC-assisted growth promotion and metal uptake in H. annuus was also evaluated in a pot experiment. In comparison with non-inoculated seedlings, the inoculation led to an increase in the growth of H. annuus by 27, 25, and 28% in Co-, Pb-, and Zn-contaminated soils, respectively. Moreover, enhanced accumulation of Co, Pb, and Zn in the shoot and root systems was observed in inoculated plants, where metal the translocation from root to the above-ground tissues was also found to be enhanced by the BMC. Evidently, these results suggest that the BMC could be effectively employed in enhancing the phytoextraction of Co, Pb, and Zn from contaminated soils.

  • A Streptomyces sp. isolated from a soil sample collected in Taejeon, Korea has previously been found to produce two new polyene antibiotics. The two new antibiotics were named "16-methyloxazolomycin (antibacterial)" and "tetrin C (antifungal)", and their chemical structures are presented elsewhere [10, 11]. In the current study, chemotaxonomy, numerical taxonomy, and ISP methods were all employed for the taxonomic study. The spore chains were spirales and the spore surface was smooth. The spore mass was a gray series and no melanin pigment was produced. On the basis of the morphological and physiological properties, the microorganism was identified to be Streptomyces erumpens, belonging to the gray series of category IV, as defined by Bergey′s Manual. Tetrin C at the concentration of 20 ${\mu}g$/ml demonstrated a potent in vivo (pot test) preventive effect against rice blast, rice sheath blight, cucumber gray mold, wheat powdery mildew, and barley leaf rust.

  • These days, citizens have a lot of ways to get access to IT. In the past, they tended to neglect IT that was thought to be difficult. But, currently, everyone can manufacture and get access not only software but also hardware when he has an idea. Arduino is used. Rinnai had recently released new product named Smart Sensor Range. Safe consumer who gave priority to the safety made new trend gave attention to fire prevention and smart sensor range. The ones who buy gas range prefer safety to economic advantage and/or fire power. The safety system does not always prevent fire accident. This study makes design and produces alarm that perceives temperature of pot when boiling. Not only temperature sensor but also alarm sensor was used to make alarm of boiling water and to give convenient living life. The arduino can be used at practical life to make products for various kinds of people. The invention can give convenience to housewives at kitchen, children and many persons making use of gas range. Another function can be added to develop. This arduino can develop a lot of products by using the study and other designs.

Preferences of Commercial Elderly-Friendly Foods among Elderly People at Senior Welfare Centers in Seoul (고령자 대상 식생활 및 시판 고령친화식품 기호도 조사 - 서울시내 노인복지시설 이용자 중심으로 -)

  • This study was performed to investigate the perception and preferences regarding commercial universal design foods (UDF) made with different ingredients. A one-to-one interview was used for data collection and the survey was conducted on 41 elderly people (over age 65; males: 11, females: 30) attending senior welfare centers in Seoul. Twelve UDF samples were collected, which were widely sold in Japan. Majority of respondents prepared meals (53.7%) and ate alone (43.9%), respectively. The preferred cooking level of elderly food was "ready to eat (RTE)" (43.9%) or "ready to heat (RTH)" (43.9%) rather than fresh cut product. In most, the elderly had no problem with chewing-action (90.2%). Generally, food ingredients such as grain, meat, seafood and fruits showed higher preference than vegetable and nuts. Among 12 UDF samples, pumpkin gratin (4.17) and peach flavored jelly (4.27) showed higher preferences among tested samples on a 5-point facial hedonic scale. There were no significant differences in overall preferences of all samples by difficulty in terms of chewing and swallowing of respondents. Demi-glace sauce hamburger and pot sukiyaki were more preferred as age increased (p<0.05).

Selection of Pollution-tolerant Plants and Restoration Planning to Recover the Forest Ecosystem Degraded by Air Pollution in the Industrial Complex

  • To restore the forest ecosystem severely damaged by air pollution around industrial complexes, plants tolerant to the polluted environment were selected by transplant and pot culture experiments. A restoration plan by arranging those tolerant species was prepared based on the ecological diagnostic results on an area that requires restoration. Transplant experiment in Ulsan and Yeocheon areas, the representative industrial complexes in Korea, selected eight tolerant species of Quercus aliena, Q. acutissima, Q. dentata, Q. mongolica, Q. serrata, Ligustrum japonicum, Styrax japonica, and Poncirus trifoliata. Cultivation in the polluted soil transported from the Ulsan and Yeocheon industrial complexes chose five tolerant plants of Q. aliena, Q. acutissima, Q. serrata, Styrax japonica, and Alnus firma. A plan to restore the forest ecosystem of Mt. Dotjil, which experienced the severest ecosystem degradation in the Ulsan industrial complex, was prepared by applying those tolerant species along with treatment for soil amelioration. Arrangement of the tolerant species was designed by considering their ecological characteristics including distribution range on topography and shade tolerance. Soil amelioration was focused on the improvement of fertility and moisture conditions.

  • This research follows the previous research on Kimchi Culture for the Koreans in Commonwealth of Independent States(CIS) and the purpose of this research was to investigate the habits with Kimchi of the Koreans in CIS. The research was carried out with items of the preparation and the preservation of Kimchi. The results were summarized as follows : 1. Abut 95% of above 30 years old of the respondents prepared Kimchi for their family. But 51.9% of under 30 years old and the forth generation of the respondents got Kimchi without self preparation. 2. All the respondents argued that the procedure of Kimchi preparation of the present indifferent from that of the past. 3. 40.2% of the respondents used to take Kimchi after 2~3 days from the preparation and 29.1% used to take after 1~2 days. 52.8% of the respondents would like to eat the well-matured Kimchi and 45.2% to eat Kimchi which was immediately prepared. 4. The most popular container for keeping was the enamel pot and the most popular places for keeping was the refrigerator. The popular keeping containers were a wooden box(61.2%), a earthen vessel(20.1%), a plastic vessel(14.7%) and the popular keeping places were a underfloor(37.9%), veranda (25.0%), underearth(22.9%) in order.

Building Up Awareness of and Preference for Local Brand Foods -Focus on Dajeon Metropolitan City- (향토음식에 대한 브랜드화 방안 연구 -대전광역시를 중심으로-)

  • This study aimed to identify particular foods that would be most appropriate as representatives foods of Daejeon, as well as the key factors affecting the branding of image of those foods. To achieve these aims we carried out a survey amongst 1,600 citizens and visitors. The Daejeon representative foods were determined to be Gujeuk Dotorimuk (Gu-jeuk acorn jelly), Hanbat Seolleongtang, Dolsotbap (stone pot mixed rice), Sutgol naengmyeon (Sutgol Cold Noodles), Daecheongho Minmulmaeuntang (Daecheong lake freshwater spicy fish soup) and Samgyetang (casserole of spatchcock with ginseng). These six dishes were designated as representative foods in 2001. Findings from the survey indicated the lowest level of brand! dish awareness was 11.6% generally and the top two preferences for the representative foods were ranked as, Samgyetang (24.8%) and Dolsotbap (23.6%). According to an awareness survey age differences played a significant role. Adults displayed a much higher awareness than younger generations. The survey also found that Daejeon city was strongly associated with images of science and technology, particularly areas such as Expo and the Daedeok Valley. This study's results suggests that developing a menu and marketing strategy based upon associated regional images may increase awareness for local foods among young consumers.

Growth of Lettuce and Young Radish and Changes of Soil Chemical Properties after Application of Soldier Fly Compost (동애등에분 처리 시 상추와 무의 생육 및 토양화학성 변화)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects on soil chemical properties and plant growth after applying soldier fly compost (SFC). Treatments were as follows. No fertilizer (NF), control, SFC1 (SFC 250 kg/10a), SFC2 (SFC 500 kg/10a) and SFC3 (SFC 1,000 kg/10a). As compared to control in the pot test, organic matter (OM) and exchangeable sodium (Ex-Na) of SFC3 treatment were increased, and growth and nutrient uptake of young radish were not significantly different. Correlation coefficient between soil chemical factors like total nitrogen (T-N), OM, and CEC and uptake of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was significantly positive (p≤0.05). Compared to control in the field test, electrical conductivity, T-N, OM, Av.-P2O5, and CEC was increased, and lettuce growth was not significantly different. Correlation coefficient between application amount of SFC and T-N, OM, and Av.-P2O5 was significant positively (p≤0.05). These results indicated that the application of SFC improved nutrient availability of soil by increasing OM and CEC.

Natural-Language-Based Robot Action Control Using a Hierarchical Behavior Model

  • In order for humans and robots to interact in daily life, robots need to understand human speech and link it to their actions. This paper proposes a hierarchical behavior model for robot action control using natural language commands. The model, which consists of episodes, primitive actions and atomic functions, uses a sentential cognitive system that includes multiple modules for perception, action, reasoning and memory. Human speech commands are translated to sentences with a natural language processor that are syntactically parsed. A semantic parsing procedure was applied to human speech by analyzing the verbs and phrases of the sentences and linking them to the cognitive information. The cognitive system performed according to the hierarchical behavior model, which consists of episodes, primitive actions and atomic functions, which are implemented in the system. In the experiments, a possible episode, "Water the pot," was tested and its feasibility was evaluated.

Synthesis and Bonding Properties of Phenol·Resorcinol·Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives (페놀·레조르시놀 수지의 합성과 접착성능)

  • The phenol resorcinol formaldehyde resin (PRF) adhesives which are curing at ambient temperature for structural purposes were synthesized. A PRF resin is produced according to the two-stage reaction system. In first stage, a low-condensed resol or methylolated phenol were prepared from phenol by reaction with a formaldehyde in alkaline condition. The molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde was 1.0~1.4. And in second-stage, resorcinol was added to combine with the methylol group of a low-condensed resol(R/P molar ratio 0.3). The glue-joint strength, pot-life and workability of this synthetic PRF resin were superior to conventional ambient temperature setting adhesives such as oilic urethane or water based polymer-isocyanate resin for wood adhesives.
