Herbicidal activity of $\delta$-aminolevulinic acid(ALA), an intermediate for the biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles such as chlorophyll, heme, bacteriochlorophyll, and vitamin $\textrm{B}_{12}$ analogues, was examined to determine the variation in phytotoxic potential against different plant species as affected by different application methods. Seed-soaking treatment, ALA at low concentrations did not affect shoot and root lengths of test plants while at highest concentration reduced them by 20 to 30%. Alfalfa showed the most tolerant response to ALA in both pre- and post-emergence application, and followed by rice. When applied with pre-emergence, cotyledons of Chinese cabbage were severely bleached with 0.5 mM of ALA at 24 hrs after application, and root growth of rice, barnyard grass, and alfalfa was significantly inhibited with increasing of concentration. With post-emergence application, ALA at 2 to 4 mM reduced shoot and root growths of Chinese cabbage and barnyard grass completely. Herbicidal effects of ALA were more enhanced in the treatment combined with 2,2-dipyridyl sthan single application in barnyard grass and Chinese cabbage. The results suggest that alfalfa was the most tolerant to ALA among the tested plants, and that post-emergence application of ALA exhibited greatest photodynamic activity against tested plants.
The study was conducted to know the differential growth responses of soybean cultivars as affected by various application stages of Metribuzin herbicide, at the University experimental farm of Chonnam Nat'l. Univ, Kwangjoo, 1980. Experimented soybean materials were six cultivars, as Kwanggyo, Dongbuktae, Bongui, Yukwoo 3, Suweon 85, and Suweon 86., . and Laid-out application stages were five as pre-sowing, Pre-emergence, Early Post-emergence, and Late Post-emergence treatment comparing with Control. Results obtained from the study were as follows: Among experimented soybean cultivars, no significantly tolerant cultivar was shown. Highly significant differences in phytotoxicities by Metribuzin treatments were detected among various application stages, and crop tolerances were recognized bigger in order as E. Post-emg. < L. Post-emg. $\ll$ Pre-emg. < Pre-sowing $\leq$ Control. The phytotoxic symptoms of all soybean cuitivars were severely recorded in order of Leaf No. /Plant < Plant height $\ll$ Branch No. /Plant. For the cultivation of most soybean cuitivars, the use of Metribuzin in Pre-sowing or Pre-emergence were recommended, and especially it is expected to follow of more detailed study on soil-incorporation method in Pre-sowing treatment, and rather the tank-mixture system of Metribuzin with others than the mono-application system for the safe-use and enlargement of weeding-spectrum.

During the routine survey, the mortality of mulberry seedlings was noticed due to damping-off disease. The disease recognized by rotting of emerged seedlings near the soil line (just below the soil level) resulting in collapse of the seedlings. Two fungi were isolated from affected samples and identified as Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler and Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc. Both the fungi were found to be responsible in causing pre and post emergence damping-off of seedlings in mulberry. For management of the disease, an experiment was conducted using fungicides. These fungicides were applied as seed treatment; soil drenching and foliar spray alone and in combination. Among the different treatments, integration of seed treatment and soil application of Dithane M-45 (Mancozeb 75% WP) + Bavistin (Carbendazim 50% WP) followed by foliar spray of these fungicides (after 35 days of sowing) resulted in better survivability of seedlings (93.3 %) on $90^th$ day and controlled the pre and post emergence damping off by 100 and 89.5%, respectively over the check.
Herbicidal characterisitcs of natural product chrysophanic acid were investigated in a greenhouse condition. At early- and middle-stage post-emergence treatments, several grasses and broadleaf weeds appeared to be very susceptible to chrysophanic acid. However, any significant herbicidal activity treated by pre-emergence did not occur at concentration ranges from 31.3 to 1,000 ug $mL^{-1}$. Herbicidal activity of chrysophanic acid estimated by visual injury for large crabgrass was much higher when applied at 7 to 14 days after seeding than at 21 and 28 days after seeding. By post-emergence treatment, chrysophanic acid caused very considerable phytotoxicity on several grasses and broadleaf crops. In herbicidal interaction experiments determined by Colby's method, the effect of chrysophanic acid and caryophyllene oxide tank-mixture showed very high synergistic activity. Although chrysophanic acid did not give any pre-emergence effect, herbicidal spectrum tended to be very wide and strong when treated by post-emergence. These results suggest that chrysophanic acid possesses a possible potential to develop as a natural herbicide.
The methanolic crude leaf extract of Acacia melanoxylon shows inhibitory effects on seed germination, shoot growth, root growth and biomass of black gram (Phaseolus mungo L. Co 1) and weeds (Cassia occidentalis L. and Cyperus rotundus L.). The post emergence treatment was given on the 8th day after sowing and 4-6 days after seedling emergence. After postemergence treatment with 20% extract concentration, wilting symptoms appeared in P. mungo and C. occidentalis while necrosis occurred in C. rotundus. The seedling growth was inhibitory at all concentrations (5%, 10%, 20%) as compared to control plants. This inhibitory effect may be due to the presence of allelochemicals like phenolics in the A. melanoxylon leaves. Different types of phenolic acids were identified.
Effects of topical application with 1, 5 and 10 ${\mu}$g/ml testosterone on the precocooning and post cocooning traits of the polyvoltine. Pure Mysore breed of silkworm were studied. Each concentration was treated independently at 36th to III, IV and V instar larvae(Treatment-1), at 48th to IV and V instar larvae(Treatment-2_ and at 72th to V instar larvae(Treatment-3). The repeated application with each concentration of testosterone propionate in treatment, and 2 larvae or single application in treatment 3 variously affected the precocooning and post cocooning traits. Repeated applications of all doses of testosterone propionate(Treatment-1) and single application of 1 & 5 ${\mu}$g of the chemical(Treatment-3) increase the fecundity and decrease the percentage of cocooning and moth emergence.

Reports of herbicide resistance events are proliferating worldwide, leading to new cultivation strategies using combinations of pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides. We analyzed the impact during a one-year cultivation cycle of several herbicide combinations on the rhizobacterial community of glyphosate-tolerant Bt-maize and compared them to those of the untreated or glyphosate-treated soils. Samples were analyzed using pyrosequencing of the V6 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene. The sequences obtained were subjected to taxonomic, taxonomy-independent, and phylogeny-based diversity studies, followed by a statistical analysis using principal components analysis and hierarchical clustering with jackknife statistical validation. The resilience of the microbial communities was analyzed by comparing their relative composition at the end of the cultivation cycle. The bacterial communites from soil subjected to a combined treatment with mesotrione plus s-metolachlor followed by glyphosate were not statistically different from those treated with glyphosate or the untreated ones. The use of acetochlor plus terbuthylazine followed by glyphosate, and the use of aclonifen plus isoxaflutole followed by mesotrione clearly affected the resilience of their corresponding bacterial communities. The treatment with pethoxamid followed by glyphosate resulted in an intermediate effect. The use of glyphosate alone seems to be the less aggressive one for bacterial communities. Should a combined treatment be needed, the combination of mesotrione and s-metolachlor shows the next best final resilience. Our results show the relevance of comparative rhizobacterial community studies when novel combined herbicide treatments are deemed necessary to control weed growth.
This study was performed to find the effective post-emergence herbicides to control of Poa annua that has already emerged from the soil in Kentucky bluegrass. A total of 8 treatments consist of various post-emergence herbicides applied at recommended concentration or lower concentration than recommended concentration to prevent Kentucky bluegrass injury in this study. Methiozolin showed the least injury in Kentucky bluegrass during 40 days after treatments and there were no footprints by methiozolin in creeping bentgrass green during 20 days. However, Poa annua control was 60.4%, which was less than those of other 7 treatments in this study. Both of asulam sodium and iodosulfuron plus asulam sodium exhibited the higher Poa annua control of 81.7% and 82.2% respectively without serious injury in Kentucky bluegrass during 40 days, and they showed a slight footprints damage in creeping bentgrass green. On the other hand, critical Kentucky bluegrass injuries and the vivid and numerous footprints were occurred in treatments of trifloxysulfuron-sodium, foramsulfuron, rimsulfuron and flazasulfuron, even though they were applied with only 1/4 of recommended concentration. Methiozolin is available to reduce gradually Poa annua population on Kentucky bluegrass without severe turfgrass damage. Asulam sodium or iodosulfuron plus asulam sodium could be useful to remove Poa annua by spot treatment but it is prohibited to spray directly on green even spot.
The effects of salt are studied on control of weeds and growth of Korean turfgrass(Zoysia japon-ica Steud.). And the mobility of salt were determined in a lawn field. At post-emergence stage, the growth of the 13 weeds such as Trifolium repens, Erigeron canadensis, Artemisia prieceps, Equi-setum arvense, etc were controlled by treatment of salt and salt water, Pea-annua and Equisetum arvense were tolerant to salt compared with the other 11 weeds. At pre-emergence stage, the salt controlled the germination of the weeds in soil. 300~500 kg /10a salt and 20~30 % salt waterwere enough for the control of weeds, However, salt water injuried the lawngrass except the dormancy stage. The mobility of salt in soil was increased by rainfall. After 160mm of rainfall, the salinity in the soil treated with salt 500kg /l0a was below 0.3 ms/cm in surface soil and about 0.1 ms /cm in soil 30 cm depth. Key words: Soil environmental survey, Korean turfgrass, Salt, Salt water.
To select appropriate herbicides for adzukibean and mungbean, a series of experiments was carried out in both field and pot from 1980 to 1983. Tolerance to the herbicides tested was highest in soybeans and followed by mungbean and adzukibean in the order. Pre-emergence herbicides showed relatively low phytotoxicity were chlorambem, linuron, and metribuzin for adzukibean and alachlor and butachlor for mungbean. Post-emergence herbicides showed no external phytotoxicity for adzukibean and mungbean were alloxydim, Dowco 453, fluazifop, etc.. For mungbean, terbutryn (1.5 kg, a.i./ha) which is pre-emergence herbicide showed the best weeding control efficacy but some possible phytotoxicity. Among post-emergence herbicides, acifluorfen (300 g, a.i./ha) showed the best weeding efficacy with no yield reduction though some phytotoxicity which recovered within 20 days. Compared to single herbicide application, the mixture or systemic treatments of herbicides showed much higher weeding control efficacy and seed yields: the systemic treatments of linuron (500 g, a.i./ha) / Dowco 453 (180 g, a.i./ha) or linuron (500 g, a.i./ha) / fluazufop (260 g, a.i./ha) for adzukibean and the mixture treatment of alachlor (1.31 kg, a.i./ha) / acifluorfen (150 g, a.i./ha) for mungbean, respectively.
