  • This paper proposes a method to detect LP(License Plate) of vehicles in indoor and outdoor parking lots. In restricted environment, there are many conventional methods for detecting LP. But, it is difficult to detect LP in natural and complex scenes with background clutters because several patterns similar with text or LP always exist in complicated backgrounds. To verify the performance of LP text detection in natural images, we apply MB-LGP feature by combining with ensemble machine learning algorithm in purpose of selecting optimal features of small number in huge pool. The feature selection is performed by adaptive boosting algorithm that shows great performance in minimum false positive detection ratio and in computing time when combined with cascade approach. MSER is used to provide initial text regions of vehicle LP. Throughout the experiment using real images, the proposed method functions robustly extracting LP in natural scene as well as the controlled environment.

  • Identifying genes indispensable for an organism's life and their characteristics is one of the central questions in current biological research, and hence it would be helpful to develop computational approaches towards the prediction of essential genes. The performance of a predictor is usually measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). We propose a novel method by implementing genetic algorithms to maximize the partial AUC that is restricted to a specific interval of lower false positive rate (FPR), the region relevant to follow-up experimental validation. Our predictor uses various features based on sequence information, protein-protein interaction network topology, and gene expression profiles. A feature selection wrapper was developed to alleviate the over-fitting problem and to weigh each feature's relevance to prediction. We evaluated our method using the proteome of budding yeast. Our implementation of genetic algorithms maximizing the partial AUC below 0.05 or 0.10 of FPR outperformed other popular classification methods.

  • Sentiment classification is a recent subdiscipline of text classification, which is concerned not with the topic but with opinion. In this paper, we present a Korean sentence and document classification system using effective sentiment features. Korean sentiment classification starts from constructing effective sentiment feature sets for positive and negative. The synonym information of a English word thesaurus is used to extract effective sentiment features and then the extracted English sentiment features are translated in Korean features by English-Korean dictionary. A sentence or a document is represented by using the extracted sentiment features and is classified and evaluated by SVM(Support Vector Machine).

  • To examine the key success factors for long-lasting restaurants, we visited 10 restaurants with 30 or more than 30 years of tradition, located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do districts, to research these restaurant menus and customer characteristics by observation and interview. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The outstanding feature noted was that each and every restaurant had its own simple and specialized menu. We found that this feature created a virtuous circle that reinforced itself through a positive feedback loop. The simple and specialized menu increased both the cooking efficiency and food quality while it reduced both food and labor costs, this enabled the customers to eat at an affordable price and have generous servings. This lead to customer satisfaction and revisits to the restaurant, which triggered word-of-mouth referral and expansion of their customer base. This in turn created higher operating profit margins that could be reinvested in the business. The secret recipes for cooking, invented by their founders, were passed on from generation to generation. Their customer base included customers of all ages from children to senior people. And their regular customers consisted of neighboring office workers and families traveling from a long distance. We hope that our findings on long-lasting restaurants, especially of the virtuous cycle created due to the simple and specialized menus with secret recipes, will contribute to the development of Korean style long-lasting restaurant model.

  • Phlegm smear testing for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) requires careful examination of tubercle bacilli under a microscope to distinguish between positive and negative findings. The biggest weakness of this method is the visual limitations of the examiners. It is also time-consuming, and mistakes may easily occur. This paper proposes a method of identifying tubercle bacilli that uses a computer instead of a human. To address the challenges of AFB testing, this study designs and investigates image systems that can be used to identify tubercle bacilli. The proposed system uses an electronic microscope to capture digital images that are then processed through feature extraction, image segmentation, image recognition, and neural networks to analyze tubercle bacilli. The proposed system can detect the amount of tubercle bacilli and find their locations. This paper analyzes 184 tubercle bacilli images. Fifty images are used to train the artificial neural network, and the rest are used for testing. The proposed system has a 95.6% successful identification rate, and only takes 0.8 seconds to identify an image.

  • Pedestrian detection is a very important and valuable part of artificial intelligence and computer vision. It can be used in various areas for example automatic drive, video analysis and others. Many works have been done for the pedestrian detection. The accuracy of pedestrian detection on multiple pedestrian image has reached high level. It is not easily get more progress now. This paper proposes a new structure based on the idea of HOG and convolutional filters to do the pedestrian detection in single pedestrian image. It can be a method to increase the accuracy depend on the high accuracy in single pedestrian detection. In this paper, we use Multiblock HOG and magnitude of the pixel as the feature and use convolutional filter to do the to extract the feature. And then use NEWFM to be the classifier for training and testing. We use single pedestrian image of the INRIA data set as the data set. The result shows that the Convolutional Multiblock HOG we proposed get better performance which is 0.015 miss rate at 10-4 false positive than the other detection methods for example HOGLBP which is 0.03 miss rate and ChnFtrs which is 0.075 miss rate.

  • The video face recognition (FR) is one of the most popular researches in the field of computer vision due to a variety of applications. In particular, research using the attention mechanism is being actively conducted. In video face recognition, attention represents where to focus on by using the input value of the whole or a specific region, or which frame to focus on when there are many frames. In this paper, we propose a novel attention based deep learning method. Main novelties of our method are (1) the use of combining two loss functions, namely weighted Softmax loss function and a Triplet loss function and (2) the feasibility of end-to-end learning which includes the feature embedding network and attention weight computation. The feature embedding network has a positive effect on the attention weight computation by using combined loss function and end-to-end learning. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, extensive and comparative experiments have been carried out to evaluate our method on IJB-A dataset with their standard evaluation protocols. Our proposed method represented better or comparable recognition rate compared to other state-of-the-art video FR methods.

  • Brain tumors are one of the most threatening malignancies for humans. Misdiagnosis of brain tumors can result in false medical intervention, which ultimately reduces a patient's chance of survival. Manual identification and segmentation of brain tumors from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans can be difficult and error-prone because of the great range of tumor tissues that exist in various individuals and the similarity of normal tissues. To overcome this limitation, the Amended Convolutional Neural Network (ACNN) model has been introduced, a unique combination of three techniques that have not been previously explored for brain tumor detection. The three techniques integrated into the ACNN model are image tissue preprocessing using the Kalman Bucy Smoothing Filter to remove noisy pixels from the input, image tissue segmentation using the Isotonic Regressive Image Tissue Segmentation Process, and feature extraction using the Marr Wavelet Transformation. The extracted features are compared with the testing features using a sigmoid activation function in the output layer. The experimental findings show that the suggested model outperforms existing techniques concerning accuracy, precision, sensitivity, dice score, Jaccard index, specificity, Positive Predictive Value, Hausdorff distance, recall, and F1 score. The proposed ACNN model achieved a maximum accuracy of 98.8%, which is higher than other existing models, according to the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we present a system that classifies comments on a news article into a user opinion called a polarity (positive or negative). The system is a kind of document classification system for comments and is based on machine learning techniques like support vector machine. Unlike normal documents, comments have their body that can influence classifying their opinions as polarities. In this paper, we propose a feature weighting scheme using such characteristics of comments and several resources for opinion classification. Through our experiments, the weighting scheme have turned out to be useful for opinion classification in comments on Korean news articles. Also Korean character n-grams (bigram or trigram) have been revealed to be helpful for opinion classification in comments including lots of Internet words or typos. In the future, we will apply this scheme to opinion analysis of comments of product reviews as well as news articles.
