  • Rapid growth rate of container traffic in China has caused the fierce competition to attract Trans-shipment Container Cargos from/to China among competitive ports in Asia. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest some strategies to attract them from/to China by Korea ports. To do so, it evaluates the preference of important ports in the competitive situation and the competitiveness of important ports in Asia, and finally proposes the relative order of important factors. Based on the evaluation of it, Both the Pusan and the Kwangyang ports have to strengthen port facility to attract move traffic and in detail, reinforce the number of berth, yard areas and handling equipment. they also have to provide high qualify of services to deliver cargos in time. not being damaged and swiftly response to shipowner and shipper's claim.

  • Due to the change of global production network, the establishment of new strategy in Korea ports is required Especially, the trade pattern has been mainly concentrated in Northeast Asia region according to economic growth of the Asia including China, Japan, and Korea. Hence, Korea major ports with the competition of price and service has to meet the need of Northeast port alliance and has to compete against other countries in variable trade environment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose a port alliance strategy in order to promote the transshipment of Korea major ports such as Pusan port and Gwangyang port. In order to establish the logistics business model in the ports, we provided the direction of the Northeast port alliance and candidate ports in China and Japan.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the location, population growth. and cargo concentration of Korean port-cities. In the location theory, Sommer (1976) and McGee (1967) models are newly introduced, as are the Rimmer (1967), Bird (1965), Hoyle (1981) models. which were already introduced in previous studies from Korea. Analysis of population growth in the Korean port-cities is conducted using data from 1966 to 1998. Rimmer and Hoyle's concentration models are used to measure cargo concentration from 1966 to 2000. The main results of this paper are as follows: First, Korean ports are concentrated on the East Sea, the Southern Sea, and the West Sea. Their locations are closely related with the hinterland. the inland city, and growth of port-cities. In considering the foreign countrys' cases, Korean port-cities are similar to the models of Bird and Hoyle. Second, the populations of Ulsan and Pohang grew at the fastest rate in 1966-1998, while the port cities in the Honam and Jeiu region grew at much lower ratios. Most port cities are located near large industrial complexes. Third the growth rates of Gwangyang, Daesan, Pohang, Pyungtaeg, and Samchunpo increased, while those of Busan. Mukho, Masan, Mogpo, Yeosu, and Sokcho declined. Of particular note, the growth rate of Busan remained negative after the late 1980s. Fourth. empirical results using the Rimmer (1967) model indicate that Gwangyang, Daesan, Pyungtag, and Pohang have shown the concentration. But the deconcentration was shown from the Busan, Mukho, Janghang, Gunsan, Mogpo, Yeosu, Masan, Sokcho. and Jeju. Fifth, the concentration of ports located in West coast region has shown the mixed results between concentration and deconcentration except the concentration of early 1970s and 1990s. The concentration of ports located in East coast region has shown the concentration before the middle of 1980s. And deconcentration after the middle of 1980s have appeared. The Southern coast region has shown the continuous deconcentration except the partial concentration of early 1986. and 1991. Planners of Korean ports should find out the factors of concentration and deconcentration of each ports and should determine factors such as investment priority level. size and scope in order to ensure the balanced development of regional ports and port-cities.

  • In the central Busan area from Haeundae to Saha, fishing villages are vanished actually in the progress of urbanization, and 17 fishing ports surrounded by urbanized area are left alone and isolated. But, we think these urbanized fishing ports are the very resource which grant the identity as the marine city and they have considerable potentials to enhance the value of neighboring community depending on the proper development of it. In this study, we defined the fishing ports in central Busan area as the representatives of 'urban fishing port', and tried to find the way of coexistence and harmony between 'city' and 'fishing port'. For this purpose, we investigated the fishery potentials, physical environments and development demands of 17 fishing ports in central Busan area, and composed opinions from fishing communities and neighboring inhabitants to set up the long term directions of urban fishing ports development for harmonious coexistence of city and fishing port.

  • Competition between global ports is intensifying as the number of calling ports has decreased due to the growth of ship size and the implementation of global environmental regulations has begun. Global ports are pushing for a strategic and concrete transition to smart ports in order to secure port competitiveness in the future. In Korea, however, the government plans and projects for promoting smart ports have yet to materialize, and related papers and research are lacking. In this paper, the concept of smart port was established, and the current status of technology and introduction of smart ports was analyzed. In addition, the concept of Smart Port Index(SPI) was presented in order to objectively and quantitatively compare the level of smartness. As a result,

  • The growth of T/S cargoes maintained a highly upward trend by an increase of throughputs of North Chinese ports in the early 2000s. Recently, however, it has fallen dramatically due to large developmental projects of infrastructures for North Chinese ports. Despite this situation, an increase rate of T/S cargoes between Korean and Japanese ports is showing relatively high by 8 to 9 percent. Therefore this study pursues to choose objectives for marketing target of a total of 23 ports in the west of Japan by analyzing factors like a trade characteristics with Busan ports, an increase rate, a market share and a fluctuation rate of throughputs. The result of this study shows that Moji, Niigata, Naha, Shimonoseki and Kanazawa port are selected as the objectives for core marketing and Hakata, Akita, Tokuyama, Imari, Ishikari and Sakata port are chosen as ports for continuous marketing.

  • This paper measured and evaluated the technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of port labor via three inputs and three outputs using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). First, the average overall technical efficiency measured about 94.18 %, with 100 % pure technical efficiency being larger than 94.18% scale efficiency. As a result, 7 ports were identified as efficient, and 4 ports were identified as inefficient. Among the 4 ineffiecient ports, Donghae had the highest Increasing Return to Scale (IRS). However, the inefficient ports were all found to be less efficient in terms of resource operation than production scale. On the other hand, the efficient ports established priorities using the super efficiency method. As a result, port efficiency was highest for Incheon, Mokpo, Pyeongtaek-Dangjin, Masan, Yeosu Gwangyang, Jeju, and Gunsan-Daesan Ports, in order. In particular, Busan Port, found to be inefficient, would benefit from using Mokpo Port and Incheon Port as benchmarks to increase trade volume and modernize equipment for full-scale commercialization to improve labor efficiency.

  • Many computer security systems use the signatures of well-known attacks to respond to hackers. For these systems, it is very important to get the accurate signatures of new attacks as soon as possible. For this reason, honeypots and honeypot farms have been actively researched. However, they can only collect a small amount of information because hackers have a strong tendency to directly attack servers of which IP addresses are allocated. In this paper, we propose an unused ports-based decoy system to redirect hackers toward honeypots. This system opens unused ports to lure hackers. All interactions with the unused ports are considered as suspect, because the ports aren't those for real service. Accordingly, every request sent to the unused ports is redirected to a honeypot. Consequently, this system enables honeypots to collect information about hackers attacking real servers other than themselves.

  • Shipping and ports have important roles as the nodes and links in maritime logistics. The environment between shipping and ports is interrelated and has been changing' together. Recently, the changes of shipping and ports are rapidly in progress and it is expected to be developed complementarily. Especially, mega carriers reduce the number of ports of calls because the size of ships is becoming bigger and bigger and the 'hub and spokes' strategy is appeared. Therefore, the position of a hub port by the region has questioned This paper aims to research the competitive ports by the region on the basis of the patterns when mega carriers call at ports. Six regions, Far East, Southeast Asia, Northwest America, Northeast America, West Europe and Mediterranean, are organized for this research. According to the volume of cargoes, the top five ports of each region are analyzed. As a result, the competitive ports by the region are Shanghai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York New Jersey, Rotterdam and Gioia Tauro.
