  • Reye syndrome is a rapidly progressive encephalopathy with hepatic dysfunction, which often begins several days after apparent recovery from a viral illness, especially varicella or influenza A or B. Salicylate use was identified as a major precipitating factor for the development of Reye syndrome. With the recommendation to avoid use of salicylates in children, Reye syndrome has virtually disappeared in recent years. We report a case of Reye syndrome in a 5-month-old infant who had been treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and aspirin under the diagnosis of Kawasaki disease, and showed symptoms of sudden onset of irritability, rigidity, decreased activity, vomiting, poor appetite, lethargy, liver dysfunction without jaundice, coagulopathy, and hyperammonemia.

  • A 14-year-old castrated male ShihTzu diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) 6 months prior was referred to our clinic. The patient had been experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, poor appetite and hind limbs weakness. Hematology tests showed that he had a non-regenerative anemia. With aggressive treatment, the patient's state had gotten worse. He showed ragged breath, vomiting blood and loss of consciousness temporarily. Hematocrit maintained low level. Gastric hemorrhage was strongly suspected by hematemesis. Whole blood transfusion was performed and heparin was used as an anticoagulant. Prior to transfusion, the blood cross matching between donor and patient was performed and the result was compatible. After the transfusion was stabilized, 1 mg of protamine sulfate for each 100 units of heparin was prepared and given intravenously over 3 minutes to reverse the effects of heparin. Immediately after protamine injection, the patient conducted severe anaphylactic shock. Protamine sulfate is used to reverse the anticoagulant action of heparin in dogs and humans. The adverse reaction of protamine sulfate range from mild reaction to fetal cardiac arrest. When using protamine sulfate as heparin neutralization, it can lead to the death of a patient cause of anaphylactic shock. For this reason, the protamine sulfate should be injected slowly with antihistamine and the clinician should carefully monitor patients.

  • There was a mass outbreak of death caused by transport stress and malnutrition in Japanese macaques imported from Japan at a farm stock in Korea, which were diagnosed on the ground of history taking, clinical finding, hematological examination and necropsy. Twenty eight Japanese macaques imported from Japan died suddenly from the 4th day after arrival in a farm. These animals were confined very small cages individually and lose the appetite for 10 days from shipping. Main clinical findings observed from alive Japanese macaques consisted of hypothermia and dehydration. On hematological observation for typical 4 cases showed increased erythrocytes and packed cell volume. On serum biochemical examination for 3 cases showed hypoglycemia, whereas blood urea nitrogen, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were increased. On necropsy for 3 cases, hemorrhage and congestion were observed on the lung and the walls of stomach and intestine were thinned. Histologically, hemorrhagic pneumonia and enteritis with loss of villi were seen. The death of these animal was caused by poor management during transport, which was resulted in transport stress and malnutrition.

The results obtained were as follows : About 88.8% of the respondents perceived well the importance of breakfast, but only 33.2% of them responded to have breakfast every morning. It was found that males, older people, married people and people with higher education had a tendency to have breakfast regularly. The main reasons for having breakfast were 'for nutritional intake'(42.2%) and 'for relieving hunger' (31.3%). Cooked rice with soup (78.4%) was the most popular menu for breakfast. The time for breakfast was about 5∼15 minutes. The reasons for skipping breakfast were 'the lack of time > low appetite > habitually', but 59.6% of the respondents answered to have cooked rice with soup if they would. The 95.6% of the respondents showed more than the 'moderate' score on nutritional knowledge. Female salaried people showed higher scores on nutritional knowledge than male counterparts. People with higher education had a better nutritional knowledge. It was found that male, older people, people with higher education, and members in the extended family or nuclear family had good eating habits. Nutritial knowledge showed a significant positive relationship with eating habits. Overall, salaried people perceived the importance of breakfast, but had Poor dietary habit of skipping breakfast at 23.3%. • We examined breakfast patterns and preferences in 420 elementary school students (216 boys, 206 girls) in the Chung-nam area. About thirty percent of the subjects had breakfast irregularly. The main reasons for skipping breakfast were having a 'poor appetite' and being 'busy'. The person who prepared breakfast was the 'mother' in both groups. Subjects were satisfied with 'Korean style' menu but dissatisfied with 'rice porridge-style'. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the 'frequency of having breakfast' was positively related to the subject's 'frequency of having breakfast with their mother'. On the other hand, the frequency of having breakfast was negatively related to feeling obligated to have breakfast. The multiple regression analysis also indicated that a Korean style 'breakfast preference' was positively related to the mother's age and negatively related to their 'wake-up time'. A 'breakfast preference for bread and milk' was positively related to 'bed time' and negatively related to the 'age of the father'. Our results will provide critical information for the nutritional education of elementary school students.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the music therapy as one of the 17 kinds of oriental medicine music therapy and investigate the record in the literature. The spleen is an organ that has the function of digestion, absorption, and supply of nutrition. Damp, anxiety, and improper diet can cause deficiency syndrome of the spleen. The symptoms of deficiency of the spleen are poor appetite, abdominal distension, borborygmus, water-grain dysentery, dyspepsia, and lack of strength in limbs. CV12, CV6, S36, B20, B21, and Sp4 are can be used as acupuncture points that are a great help to the patients who suffer from deficiency of the spleen. This study describes the theory of invigorating the spleen music therapy that has a good possibility as a new method of oriental medical treatment and present the acupuncture points that can be used with invigorating the spleen music therapy. The tone of the spleen is Gung(宮) and the sound of the spleen is related to a song. The music therapy of invigorating the spleen includes beating Earth-Gi(地氣) rhythm with Cheonnyeonmanse, stimulating Spleen Meridian and Stomach Meridian with Gayaguem sanjo jungjungmori, and acupuncture with "Le Cygne" of Camille Saint-Saens.

  • Objectives & Methods : We investigated the cases for which spleen tonifying Sa-Am acupuncture was applied in ${\ulcorner}$Sa-Am-chim-gu-jeong-jeon(舍巖鍼灸正傳)${\lrcorner}$ and classified them according to the concepts of cold-heat & deficiency-excess for a better understanding of the application of spleen tonifying Sa-Am acupuncture. Results : 1. Tonification of Spleen Sa-Am acupuncture can be used to treat heat syndromes such as deficient fire caused by collapse of the spleen qi, stagnation of evil qi or spleen yin deficiency, by way of tonifying spleen qi, activating the flow of qi and blood or harmonizing spleen yin and yang. 2. Tonification of Spleen Sa-Am acupuncture can be used to treat cold syndromes such as weakness of spleen yang by way of promoting fire to generate earth, strengthening spleen yang and raising the clear yang. 3. Tonification of Spleen Sa-Am acupuncture can be used to treat deficiency syndromes such as malnutrition or poor appetite caused by spleen deficiency by way of tonifying spleen qi. 4. Tonification of Spleen Sa-Am acupuncture can be used to treat excess syndromes such as stagnation of qi and blood, abdominal mass or toxication by way of tonifying spleen qi and promoting the flow of qi and blood.
