  • In the aircraft industry, anti- and de-icing are one of very important techniques for the safety. The anti-icing technique had not been studied while de-icing technique had been not only researched enough but applied to aircraft industry. In this work, surface roughness and energies of polyurethane (PU) topcoat were controlled with 3 different nanoparticles which was coated to PU topcoat. It was evaluated via static contact angle using distilled water. The adhesion property of 3 nanoparticles was evaluated directly using adhesion pull-off test. The color gamut of nanoparticle coated PU topcoat was also evaluated with 3 different nanoparticles. It was determined using RGB color degree variation between neat PU topcoat and coated nanoparticle. Finally, the optimized nanoparticle was determined to manufacture hydrophobic surface and to maintain color of neat PU topcoat for the aircraft.

  • Aqueous emulsion of polyurethane (PU) ionomers were reinforced with hydrophobic nanosilica to give composites. The aqueous emulsion was stable and the particle size increased as the content of hydrophobic nanosilica was increased. The reinforcing effect of nanosilica in mechanical properties of these composites were examined by dynamic mechanical and tensile tests, and the Shore A hardness was measured. Enhanced thermal and water resistance and marginal reduction in transparency of these composites were observed compared with pristine polymer. These results were similar with those of our previous studies on waterborne PU/organoclay nanocomposites.

  • For the application of silk sericin, silk sericin powders were prepared by various spray dry conditions and the characteristics of silk sericin/polyurethane mixed films were investigated. When the sericin was dried from the solution at higher inlet and outlet temperature, larger sizes of the powder particles were obtained. It was also found that inlet and outlet temperatures were important factors affecting the shape and surface characteristics of sericin power particle. The many holes and empty spaces were observed at the surface and cross section of sericin/PU mixed film. With the increase of the amount of sericin powder in the mixed films, the size and number of holes and empty spaces were increased. The thickness of sericin/PU mixed film was increased with the content of sericin powder. As the portion of sericin powder increase, the tenacity is decreased while the elongation slightly increased.

  • In this experiment no solvent based polyurethane(PU) adhesives were prepared with the polyol, isocyanate, dioctyl phthalate(DOP), 2-hydroxyethylacrylate(2-HEA) and other acrylate monomers. The softenening point of the PU adhesives measured by Ring & Ball method were examined in the present study. And adhesion strength and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and 100% modulus of the PU adhesives were evaluated by Universal Test Machine. The experimental results showed that increase of both DPE-41, benzoylperoxide(BPO) and toluene diisocyanate(TDI) increased softenening point, adhesion strength, tensile strength and 100% modulus. However as DOP content increased sofenening point, adhesion strength decreased and tensile strength, 100% modulus also decreased.

  • Uniform nanofibers of polyurethane with different content of Juniperus Chinensis extracts (JCE) were successfully prepared by the electrospinning method. We investigated physiochemical properties of prepared compound nanoweb according to various concentrations of Juniperus Chinensis extracts using a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimeter (TGA), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The antibacterial activity of the JCE loaded PU nanofiber was conducted using the disk diffusion test against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. JCE was induced in the infrared spectra in the absorption band of PU/JCE nanowebs at $3,300cm^{-1}$, $2,960cm^{-1}$, $1,400-1,600cm^{-1}$, and $1,050cm^{-1}$. Thermal stability decreased with increasing JCE content in the PU/JCE nanowebs. The DSC curve of the PU nanoweb shows an endotherm peak at $420^{\circ}C$; in addition, the peak also became smaller and broader with increasing JCE content. The diffraction intensities of PU observed at 2 theta of $20^{\circ}$ decreased with the increasing amount of JCE in the compound nanoweb. In addition, the crystal intensities of the compound nanowebs also decreased along with the JCE content. Structural analysis indicates that JCE and PU are miscible. Juniperus Chinensis incorporated PU nanofibers demonstrated excellent antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

  • Polyurethane-polysiloxanes (PU/PDMS) was synthesized using 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) to overcome the weakness to the organic chemicals. The composite membranes were prepared onto porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) supports. In vapor permeation experiments, the flux increased with increasing operating temperatures and feed concentrations while the separation factors showed the opposite trend, so-called 'trade-off'. In this study, the effect of the flux on the operating temperatures was not severe since the content of the soft segments is fairly higher than that of the hard segments. The composite membrane type of PU/PDMS maintained high flux and separation factor as well when comparing with the dense type membranes.

  • Conventional solvent-based polyurethane (PU) is well established for wide applications, such as textile treatments, surface coating, adhesive and so on. Due to the demands of safety, economic, and environmental protection, the solvent-based PU is restricted and has been phasing out and aqueous-based PU is becoming the world market trend, which is an environmental friendly product. The chemical resistance, physical and mechanical properties of aqueous-based PU are still not competible with solvent-based PU. Because of aqueous-based PU is a linear thermoplastic polymer with lower average molecular weight. Their improvements are normally performed by a post-curing reaction or a polymer hybridization to enhance the polymer cross-linking density. Hybridization of PU with aqueous-based epoxy resin or acrylate emulsion and then cured by a curing agent for improving the performance properties and reducing the cost of aqueous-based PU.Furthermore, a special function is added to aqueous-based PU increasing the application value, for examples, flame retardation, polymeric dyes, hydrophilic and etc.

  • PURPOSES : The objectives of this study are to develop the eco-friendly pavement material using polyurethane binder and evaluate mechanical properties of the developed binder and concrete. METHODS : The bending beam test was conducted to select the sample candidates of polyurethane binder based on the bending strength. The characteristics of viscosity, curing time, and temperature change of sample binder was examined on different temperature conditions. The mechanical properties of polyurethane binder was estimated using the dynamic modulus testing. The indirect tensile strength test was conducted on polyurethane binder concrete with different gradation and binder content for evaluating the mechanical properties of concretes. RESULTS : Based on the beading beam test, four different binder samples were prepared for estimate the mechanical properties. The viscosity of polyurethane binder tends to increase with increase of liquid temperature and the hardening phenomenon begins 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature after mixing the resin and hardener. It is observed that the dynamic modulus of binder increases as loading frequency increases and change of modulus is found to be the highest in the PU-2I binder type. The PU-2I binder concretes shows the largest value of indirect tensile strength and indirect tensile energy. CONCLUSIONS : The use of polyurethane binder as pavement materials is capable of increasing the pavement performance and reducing the detrimental environmental effect during the highway construction.

  • Polyurethane (PU) sheets were fabricated by the reaction of polypropylene glycol (PPG) and liquid diphenyl methane diisocyanate (L-MDI) with various trimethylol propane (TMP) contents. The $T_g$ value was varied from 34.8 $^{\circ}C$ to 49.9 $^{\circ}C$ according to the TMP content. As the content of TMP was increased from 4 to 12 wt%, the modulus of the PU sheet was increased from 322 MPa to 423 MPa, its tensile strength was increased from 10.6 MPa to 14.8 MPa, and its elongation was decreased from 62.8% to 49%. In case of acoustic properties, the sound speed of PU sheet was increased while its attenuation coefficient was decreased as the content of TMP was increased. The fabricated PU sheet was stable in water bath for 4 weeks.

  • Dispersion and electrical resistance (ER) properties of polyurethane (PU) type topcoat were evaluated using carbon nanotube (CNT) with different CNT weight fraction. CNT was dispersed in PU type topcoat using ultra sonication dispersion method. CNT/PU topcoat was coated on carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite (CFRC) surface using gravity feed spraying method. Static contact angles of CFRC and CNT/PU topcoat were performed using 4 types of solvents to calculate the work of adhesion between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC surface. Surface resistance of CNT added PU topcoat was measured to determine CNT dispersion. Adhesion property between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC was determined via cross hatch cutting test based on ASTM D3359. The optimized condition of CNT weight fraction was found.
