  • A wide variety of unsaturated vinyl derivatives can be induced to undergo free-radical chain polymerization. The capability to carry out a thermodynamically feasible polymerization relies on its kinetic feasibility on whether the proceeds at a reasonable rate under a given set of reaction conditions. Initiator or promoter is often required to achieve the kinetic feasibility. Only a few unsaturated monomers including methyl methacrylate(MMA) are known to absorb light between 250 and 500 nm which is the most convenient wavelength range. Also, the polysilanes with unusual optical and electronic properties have been used as ceramic precursors, deep UV photoresists, photoconductors. The hydrosilation has been used to make many interesting types of silicon containing polymers such as copolymer, dendrimers. Bulk polymerization of monomers with different molar radio of hydrosilanes(9:1 through 1:9) were performed. A quartz test tube charged with monomer and hydrosilane was degassed and irradiated with 250 nm UV for 6 hours. The polymer was taken in toluene, precipitated in hexane, filtered off, and dried. It was found that the initiators appeared to competitively and concurrently function as both chain initiation and transfer agents in the polymerization of vinyl monomers.

  • Recently, variety of organic and inorganic hybrid materials have recently investigated as alternative routes to SiOC, $SiO_2$ thin film formation at low temperatures for applications in electronic ceramics. Specially, silicon based polymers, such as polycarbosilane, polysilane and polysilazane derivatives have been studied for use in electronic ceramics and have been applied as dielectric or insulating materials. In this study, Polycarbosilane(PCS), which Si-$CH_2$-Si bonds build up the backbone of the polymer, has been investigated as low-k materials using a solution process. After heat treatment at 350$^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere, chemical composition and dielectric constant of the thin film were $SiO_{0.27}C_{1.94}$ and 1.2, respectively. Mechanical property measured using nanoindentor shows 1.37 GPa.

  • In this study, polysilanes were synthesized by electroreduction with different monomers such as $CH_3HSiCl_2$, $PhSiCl_3$, $CH_3SiCl_3$ and $(CH_3)_2SiCl_2$ by Mg electrodes under ultrasonic radiation. The effects of monomers and additives (p-dibromobenzene (DBB), naphthalene (NAPH) and anthracene (ANTH)) on the reaction rate were investigated. Polymerization of $PhSiCl_3$ among the four monomers showed the highest rate. p-dibromobenzene (DBB) was proved the most effective additive. Based on the observations, some possible reaction mechanisms of the polymerization were proposed.

  • Polysilanes with sterically bulky substituents, -[2-( $R^1R^2$-phenyl)propyl]Si[$R^3$]-, such as poly(2-phenylpropyl)(n-hexyl)silane [$R^1=R^2$=H, $R^3$=n-hexyl] were prepared by Wurtz-type coupling reactions with Na using a sonochemical method. The high-intensity ultrasound provided the formation of high quality Na dispersion in toluene and its active surface which was important for the synthesis of polysilanes in Wurtz-type coupling reaction was freshly and continuously regenerated during the process. The polysilanes products were mixtures of high molecular weight polymers with $\={M}_W$ of ∼$10^6$ and low molecular weight polymers with $\={M}_W$ of ∼$10^3$. It was found that the formation of high molecular weight polymerr was greatly influenced by the substituents $R^3$, directly attached to Si. On the contrary, changes on substituents ($R^1, R^2$) gave no influences at all. Overall yields for polysilanes were 75-99% in general but high molecular weight polysilanes were obtained as a major product when substituent $R^3$ is n-hexyl group and low molecular weight polysilanes were obtained as a major product when substituent $R^3$ is cyclohexyl and 2-phenylethyl groups. Effects of reaction conditions to polysilane yields were investigated.
