  • The size of head capsule is one of the most important factors for identifying developmental stage. In order to understand the developmental characteristics of the butterfly Atrophaneura alcinous, we examined fluctuations in larval head capsule size under three different temperature conditions (20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$) and 60% humidity. As a result, larvae developed to the fifth instar at all three temperatures. The head capsule size of larvae tended to be larger at the lowest temperature and smaller at the highest temperature. The development rate showed a regular change, consistent with Dyar's rule regarding head capsule size development. Furthermore, the development of head capsule size was found to correspond to a second degree polynomial regression better than to a linear regression. On the basis of these results, it would appear to be possible to perform an accurate assessment of instar status during the development of A. alcinous.

  • In this paper, a dead reckoning navigation system for differential drive mobile robots is presented. The navigation system consists of two incremental encoders and a gyroscope. We have built a third order polynomial function for compensating the nonlinear scale factor errors of the gyroscope. We utilize an indirect Kalman filter that feeds back estimated errors to the main navigation system. Also, the observability of the filter is analyzed in order to systematically evaluate the filter's performance. Experimental results show that the proposed navigation system provides a reliable position and heading angle by mutually compensating the encoder and the gyroscope errors. The proposed filter also reduces the computational burden and enhances the navigation system's reliability. The observability analysis confirms the characteristics of inevitably unbounded position error growth in dead reckoning navigation systems.

  • A well known result due to Ankeny and Rivlin [1] states that if $p(z)={\sum}^n_{j=0}a_jz^j$ is a polynomial of degree n satisfying $p(z){\neq}0$ for |z| < 1, then for $R{\geq}1$ $$\max_{{\mid}z{\mid}=R}{\mid}p(z){\mid}{\leq}{\frac{R^n+1}{2}}\max_{{\mid}z{\mid}=1}{\mid}p(z){\mid}$$. It was proposed by Professor R.P. Boas Jr. to obtain an inequality analogous to this inequality for polynomials having no zeros in |z| < k, k > 0. In this paper, we obtain some results in this direction, by considering polynomials of degree $n{\geq}2$, having all its zeros on the disk |z| = k, $k{\leq}1$.

  • The existence of solutions of a class of two-point boundary value problems for higher order differential equations is studied. Sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one solution are established. It is of interest that the nonlinearity f in the equation depends on all lower derivatives, and the growth conditions imposed on f are allowed to be super-linear (the degrees of phases variables are allowed to be greater than 1 if it is a polynomial). The results are different from known ones since we don't apply the Green's functions of the corresponding problem and the method to obtain a priori bound of solutions are different enough from known ones. Examples that can not be solved by known results are given to illustrate our theorems.

  • This study empirically evaluates the impact of exchange rate volatility, foreign direct investment, terms of trade, inflation, and industrial production and foreign exchange reserves on Pakistani trade volume over the period of 1975-2010 using quarterly data set. The study employs financial econometrics methods such as Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test GARCH (1, 1) technique and Almon Polynomial Distributed Lag (APDL) models to estimate the relationship of variables. Findings of the study are in accordance with theoretical relationships presented by Clark, Tamirisa, Wei, Sadikov, & Zeng (2004), McKenzie (1999), Dellas & Zilberfarb (1993) and Côté (1994). These findings are also in accordance with the empirical studies which support positive relationship of exchange rate volatility and exports presented by Hsu & Chiang (2011), Chit (2008), Feenstra & Kendall (1991), Esquivel & Larraín (2002) and Onafowora & Owoye (2008). Findings of the study in terms of imports are supported by the studies such as Lee (1999), Alam & Ahmad (2011) and Arize (1998). The study also recommends some very important policy prescriptions.

  • Recently, the construction of infrastructures has been booming and accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth. Construction activities and operation of transportation facilities cause unfavorable effects such as civil petitions associated with vibration-induced damages or nuisances. The objective of this study is to develop vibration-controlled concrete using various vibration-controlling materials , and also to investigate dynamic properties of concrete beam depending on damage level. Vibration-controlled mixtures are latex, rubber powder and plastic resin, which have been determines to by and large reduce vibration. KS F2437 has been used to figure out 1st natural frequency and dynamic flexural rigidity. Dynamic damping rations have been, computed by adopting the polynomial curvefitting method on the frequency spectrum curve, of which results have been compared and analyzed hereon

  • In this paper we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for an analytic function f on the unit ball B with Hadamard gaps, that is, for $f(z)\;=\;{\sum}^{\infty}_{k=1}\;P_{nk}(z)$ (the homogeneous polynomial expansion of f) satisfying $n_{k+1}/n_{k}{\ge}{\lambda}>1$ for all $k\;{\in}\;N$, to belong to the weighted Bergman space $$A^p_{\alpha}(B)\;=\;\{f{\mid}{\int}_{B}{\mid}f(z){\mid}^{p}(1-{\mid}z{\mid}^2)^{\alpha}dV(z) < {\infty},\;f{\in}H(B)\}$$. We find a growth estimate for the integral mean $$\({\int}_{{\partial}B}{\mid}f(r{\zeta}){\mid}^pd{\sigma}({\zeta})\)^{1/p}$$, and an estimate for the point evaluations in this class of functions. Similar results on the mixed norm space $H_{p,q,{\alpha}$(B) and weighted Bergman space on polydisc $A^p_{^{\to}_{\alpha}}(U^n)$ are also given.

  • In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem for viscoelastic wave equations of Kirchhoff type with Balakrishnan-Taylor damping terms in the presence of the infinite memory and external time-varying delay. For a certain class of relaxation functions and certain initial data, we prove that the decay rate of the solution energy is similar to that of relaxation function which is not necessarily of exponential or polynomial type. Also, we show another stability with g satisfying some general growth at infinity.
