A linear rod-like molecule, bis[4-(1,3-octadynyl)phenyl] terephthalate (2), consisting of two diacetylenic groups, was prepared. The unsymmetric diacetylene was prepared by the Cadiot-Chodkiewicz coupling reaction of 1-bromohexyne with 4-ethynylphenol and linked to a benzene core by an esterification reaction with terephthaloyl chloride in tetrahydrofuran. The thin film (200 nm thickness) of compound 2 was fabricated by the physical vapor deposition on a glass plate with a thermal evaporator. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, the vapor deposited film on the glass plate showed peaks with d spacings of 19.4, 5.7, and 4.5 $\AA$. This XRD pattern was quite different from that observed for compound 2 isolated by recrystallization from methylene chloride/hexane. The vapor deposited film was polymerized by UV irradiation. Photopolymerization was carried out through a photomask, resulting in a patterned image, where the irradiated part became isotropic.
This paper demonstrates the development of a method for preparing micropatterned microdiscs in order to increase contact area with cells and to change the release pattern of drugs. The microdiscs were manufactured with hot embossing, where a polyurethane master structure was pressed onto both solid and porous microparticles made of polylactic-co-glycolic acid at various temperatures to form a micropattern on the microdiscs. Flat microdiscs were formed by hot embossing of porous microparticles; the porosity allowed space for flattening of the microdiscs. Three types of micro-grooves were patterned onto the flat microdiscs using prepared micropatterned molds: (1) 10 ${\mu}M$ deep, 5 ${\mu}M$ wide, and spaced 2 ${\mu}M$ apart; (2) 10 ${\mu}M$ deep, 9 ${\mu}M$ wide, and spaced 5 ${\mu}M$ apart; and (3) 10 ${\mu}M$ deep, 50 ${\mu}M$ wide, and spaced 50 ${\mu}M$ apart. This novel microdisc preparation method using hot embossing to create micropatterns on flattened porous microparticles provides the opportunity for low-cost, rapid manufacture of microdiscs that can be used to control cell adhesion and drug delivery rates.
We examined the cause of albinism in a hatchery population of flounder in terms of environmental and nutritional factors, including the effects of light intensity (130-12,300 lux), photoperiod (12L/12D or 24L/0D), tank substrate (concrete or fiber-reinforced polymer), tank color (white or dark green) and supplement with enriched live food, and also compared the growth of normal and albino fry under both 12L/12D and 24L/0D. Further to, normalization of the skin pigmentation pattern on the ocular side has been juvestigated after rearing the albino fry for 2 years after their identification and classification and found that, light intensity did not play a critical role in the development of normal pigmentation or albinism in the flounder. By contrast, the photoperiod was a weak inducer of albinism in the flounder. Tank substrate and color also affected the hypomelanosis on the ocular side of the flounder fry. The choice and supplementation of enriched live foods could drastically reduce the incidence of albinos in hatcheries. On comparing the growth of normal and albino fry, while there was no difference between the groups under 24L/0D, the growth of the albino flounder was slower under 12L/12D. Although coloration resulting from xanthophore and melanophore, but not iridophores, occurred on the ocular side, evidence of albinism remained on the ocular side of flounders.
In the present study, stabilized rayon fabrics were prepared from fast isothermal stabilization processes, which were carried out within four minutes at $350^{\circ}C$. The effects of ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment on the chemical composition, physical characteristics, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal stability and shape of the stabilized rayon fabrics were investigated extensively. In order to reduce the weight loss and thermal shrinkage of rayon fabrics occurring during the stabilization process, ultrasonic cleaning was first conducted and then chemical pre-treatments using $NH_4Cl$, $Na_3PO_4$, $H_3PO_4$, and $ZnCl_2$ were performed, respectively. The results indicated that both ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment influenced the weight loss, thermal shrinkage, microstructure, carbon content, thermal stability and fabric shape of stabilized rayon fabrics. Also the results depended on the fast-stabilization time and the type of chemical pre-treatment agents used.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shearbond strength and resin-dentin interface of three different dentinal bonding systems in primary and permanent teeth. Thirty extracted human primary molars and premolars, which were non-carious and free of obvious defect, were selected for this study. All specimens were divided into six groups with two groups allocated for each of the three dentinal bonding system(All-bond 2, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, Gluma bonding system). After completion of bonding composite to dentin using each tested dentin bonding system, bond strength measurement and histological observation were performed. The results are as follows: 1. All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, A good quality hybrid layer was identified, the morphology of which could be equated with the zone of H-E and Brown-Brenn staining. In Gluma bonding system, hybrid layer was very thin, and separated from the solid polymer. 2. All-bond 2 had the highest mean shearbond strength, followed by Scotchbond Multi-Purpose and Gluma bonding system in both primary and permanent teeth. There was no statistically significant difference between All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose. Statistically significant difference could be found between Gluma bonding system and the other two groups(p<0.05). 3. The fracture patterns observed were mainly the mixture of adhesive failure and dentin dettachment pattern in All-bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose while adhesive failure prevailed in Gluma bonding system.
Crosslinked chitosan was prepared from chitin after reaction with epichlorohydrin followed by deacetylation at C2-position. Epidermal releasing polymeric matrix was prepared after swelling crosslinked chitosan with distilled water and adding silver sulfadiazine and glycerine as a plasticiser. The release behavior of silver sulfadiazine from polymeric matrix was studied in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution by varing the drug content, glycerine concentration, and the thickness of the matrix. The drug release time was delayed by increasing the content of silver sulfadiazine and the thickness of the matrix, whereas decreased as glycerine concentration increased. The apparent constant(K) of release rate was independent upon the matrix thickness, but was proportional to the content of drug or glycerine of crosslinked chitosan matrix. These results indicated that chitosan matrix showed some potential as a drug delivery system for transdermal therapeutic application.

Inkjet printing is a non-contact and direct writing associated with a computer. In the industrial field, there have been many efforts to utilize the inkjet printing as a new way of manufacturing, especially for electronic devices. The etching resist used in this process is an organic polymer which becomes solidified when exposed to ultraviolet lights and has high viscosity of 300 cPs at ambient temperature. A piezoelectric-driven ink jet printhead is used to dispense $20-40\;{\mu}m$ diameter droplets onto the copper substrate to prevent subsequent etching. In this study, factors affecting the pattern formation such as printing resolution, jetting property, adhesion strength, etching and strip mechanism, UV pinning energy have been investigated. As a result, microscale Etch resist patterning of printed circuit board with tens of ${\mu}m$ high have been fabricated.

Smart material such as SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) has been studied in various ways because it can perform continuous, flexible, and complex actuation in simple structure. Smart soft composite (SSC) was developed to achieve large deformation of smart material. In this paper, a shell actuator using woven type SSC was developed to enhance stiffness of the structure while keeping its deformation capacity. The fabricated actuator consisted of a flexible polymer and woven structure which contains SMA wires and glass fibers. The actuator showed various actuation motions by controlling a pattern of applied electricity because the SMA wires are embedded in the structure as fibers. To verify the actuation ability, we measured its maximum end-edge bending angle, twisting angle, and actuating force, which were $103^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and 0.15 N, respectively.

This paper reports a novel structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for detecting de-bonding between a concrete beam and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) sheet that is attached to the concrete surface. To achieve this, a multi-scale actuated sensing system with a self-sensing circuit using piezoelectric active sensors is applied to the CFRP laminated concrete beam structure. In this self-sensing based multi-scale actuated sensing, one scale provides a wide frequency-band structural response from the self-sensed impedance measurements and the other scale provides a specific frequency-induced structural wavelet response from the self-sensed guided wave measurement. To quantify the de-bonding levels, the supervised learning-based statistical pattern recognition was implemented by composing a two-dimensional (2D) plane using the damage indices extracted from the impedance and guided wave features.

Micro- and nanoscale texturing and control of surface energy have been considered for superhydrophobicity on polymer and silicon. However these surfaces have been reported to be difficult to meet the robustness and transparency requirements for further applications, from self cleaning windows to biochip technology. Here we provided a novel method to fabricate a nearly superhydrophobic soda-lime glass using two-step method. The first step involved wet etching process to fabricate micro-sale patterns on soda-lime glass. The second step involved application of $SiO_x$-incorporated DLC to generate high intrinsic contact angle on the surface using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. To investigate the effect of surface roughness, we used both positive and negative micro-scale patterns on soda-limeglass, which is relatively hard for surface texturing in comparison to quartz or Pyrex glasses due to the presence of impurities, but cheaper. For all samples we tested the static wetting angle and transparency before and after 100 cycles of wear test using woolen steel. The surface morphology is observed using optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results shows that negative patterns had a greater wear resistance while the hydrophobicity was best achieved using positive patterns having static contact angle up to 140 deg. with about 80% transparency. The overall experiment shows that positive patterns at etching time of 1 min shows the optimum transparency and hydrophobicity. The optimization of micro-scale pattern to achieve a robust, transparent, superhydrophobic soda-lime glass will be further investigated in the future works.
