  • A polymer optical microring resonator, which is laterally coupled to a straight bus waveguide, has been proposed and demonstrated using a nanoimprint technique. The propagation loss of the ring waveguide and the optical power coupling between the ring and bus waveguides was calculated by using a beam propagation method, then the dependence of the device performance on them was investigated using a transfer matrix method. We have especially introduced an imprint stamp incorporating a smoothing buffer layer made of a silicon nitride thin film. This layer played an efficient role in improving the sidewall roughness of the waveguide pattern engraved on the stamp and thus reducing the scattering loss. As a result the overall Q factor of the resonator was greatly increased. Also it reduced the gap between the ring and bus waveguides effectively to enhance the coupling between them, without relying on the direct writing method based on an e-beam writer. As for the achieved device performance at the wavelength of 1550 nm, the quality factor, the extinction ratio, and the free spectral range were ~103800, ~11 dB, and 1.16 m, respectively.

  • A finite element model (FEM) for predicting early-age behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck slabs with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is presented. In this model, the shrinkage profile of concrete accounted for the effect of surrounding conditions including air flow. The results of the model were verified against the experimental test results, published by the authors. The model was verified for cracking pattern, crack width and spacing, and reinforcement strains in the vicinity of the crack using different types and ratios of longitudinal reinforcement. The FEM was able to predict the experimental results within 6 to 10% error. The verified model was utilized to conduct a parametric study investigating the effect of four key parameters including reinforcement spacing, concrete cover, FRP bar type, and concrete compressive strength on the behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to restrained shrinkage at early-age. It is concluded that a reinforcement ratio of 0.45% carbon FRP (CFRP) can control the early-age crack width and reinforcement strain in CFRP-RC members subjected to restrained shrinkage. Also, the results indicate that changing the bond-slippage characteristics (sand-coated and ribbed bars) or concrete cover had an insignificant effect on the early-age crack behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to shrinkage. However, reducing bar spacing and concrete strength resulted in a decrease in crack width and reinforcement strain.

  • In this paper, we fabricated organic compounds detector using the MWCNT/PMMA (multi-walled carbon nanotube / polymethylmethacrylate) composite film. We used polymer film as a matrix material for the device framework, and introduced CNTs for reacting with the organic compounds resulting in changing electrical conductivity. Spray coating method was used to form the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector, and pattern formation of the detector was done by shadow mask during the spray coating process. We investigated changes of electrical conductivity of the detector before and after the organic compounds exposure. Electrical conductivity of the detector tended to decrease after the exposure with various organic compounds such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, and dimethylformamide (DMF). Finally we conclude that organic compounds detection by the MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector was possible, and expect the feasibility of commercial MWCNT/PMMA composite film detector for various organic compounds.

  • Simultaneous filling is a goal in plastic injection mold that has multi cavities. The moldings which have not been filled at the same time have undesired faults such as dimension inaccuracy, residual stress, law mechanical strength, etc. The best way to simultaneous fill is to be injected in a geometrically balanced runner system. In a general processing, however, in balanced runner system mold, filling imbalance would be observed in cavities. These phenomena result from molten polymer's characteristics and circumstances in balanced runner. In this study, the degree of filling imbalance (DFI) was defined for showing rate of filling imbalance in geometrically balanced injection mold that has 8 cavities. Before the main experiment, an injection molding simulation was conducted to know a pattern of filling imbalance with Moldflow software. There were somewhat differences between results of experiment and simulation about the filling imbalance. The reason for the difference was that the software have not concerned about a situation in a real flow channel. It was also investigated how the injection speed affected on filling imbalance in the experiment.

  • $Poly({\varepsilon}-carbobenzoxy\;L-lysine)/poly(ethylene oxide)/poly({\varepsilon}-carbobenzoxy\;L-lysine)$ (LEL) block copolymers containing $poly({\varepsilon}-carbobenzoxy\;L-lysine)$ (PCLL) as the A component and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the B component were investigated as drug delivery matrix. PCLL homopolymer and LEL block copolymer microspheres containing anticancer drug, cytarabine, were prepared by a solvent evaporation process and the release patterns of cytarabine from the microspheres were investigated in vitro. The size of PCLL homopolymer and LEL block copolymer microspheres was ranged from $0.2\;{\mu}m$ to $1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter and the shape of the microspheres was almost round. The release pattern of cytarabine from the block copolymer microspheres was dependent on the mole % of PEO of the block copolymers.

  • The dispersion of organoclay in ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix was correlated with the rheological and swelling properties of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis exhibited the disordered-intercalated structure of EPDM/organoclay nanocomposite. The extent of the disordered phase increased with increasing organoclay content up to a limiting value of 3 wt% after which equilibrium tended towards intercalation. The dispersion effect of organoclay in EPDM matrix was clarified by the physicochemical properties like rheological response and swelling thermodynamics in toluene. The increase in viscoelastic properties of EPDM nanocomposite with increasing organoclay content up to 3 wt%, followed by a subsequent decrease up to 4 wt%, was correlated in terms of the disordered and ordered states of the dispersed nano-clay sheets. Swelling measurements revealed that the change in entropy of the swelling increased with the increase in disorder level but decreased with the increase in intercalation level of organoclay in the disordered-intercalated nanocomposite. The increase in solvent uptake was comparable with the free volume in EPDM matrix upon inclusion of silicate particles, whereas the inhibition in solvent uptake for higher organoclay loading was described by bridging flocculation.

  • We are working towards large-area arrays of thin film transistors on polymer substrates using roll-to-roll (R2R) processes exclusively. Self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) is an enabler to pattern and align submicron features on meter-scaled flexible substrates in the R2R environment. The progress, current status and remaining issues of this new fabrication technology are presented.

  • Laser-Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) is a laser addressed patterning process and has unique advantages, such as high-resolution patterning with over-all position accuracy of the imaged stripes within 2.5 micrometer and scalability to large-size mother glass. This accuracy is accomplished using real-time error correction and a high -resolution stage control system that includes laser interferometers. Here the new concept of mixed hybrid system which complement the advantages of small molecular and polymeric materials for use as an OLED; our system can realize the easy processing of polymers and high luminance efficiency of recently developed small molecules. LITI process enables to pattern the stripes with excellent thickness uniformity and multi-stacking of various functional layers without using any type of fine metal shadow mask. In this study, we report a full-color hybrid OLED using the multi-layered structure of small molecular/polymeric species.

  • This study is mainly concerned with phenomenon of cavitation-erosion on the several materials and corrosive liquids which were applied with vibrator(suggested by ASTM G 32, 20KHz, 50$mu extrm{m}$). The maximum erosion rate by cavitation erosion in both of distilled water and sea water appeared to be proportioned to their hardness and tensile strength. Cavitation weight loss and rate of cast iron in sea water condition were greater(approximately 3 times) than that in distilled water condition, however in case of stainless steel and brass the cavitation weight loss of composite materials were not so different in both of their conditions. Cavitation weight loss of composite materials were shown as below on this test, Duratough DL : Weight loss in sea-water condition were greater (approximately 2.3 times) than it's distilled water condition. The main tendency of cavitation erosion for metals appeared that small damaged holes causing by cavitation erosion was observed with radial pattern. On the other hand, the tendency for composites appeared that small damaged holes were observed randomly.
