  • The dielectric properties of semi-IPN poly(phenylene oxide)(PPO) blend/$BaTiO_3$(BT) composites are investigated. The composites are fabricated via melt-mixing of crosslinker and peroxide in precursor PPO composite obtained by precipitating the suspension consisted of PPO, BT and toluene into methylethyl ketone, poor solvent of PPO. The permittivity of the precursor PPO composites shows higher value than that of integral-blended PPO composites by extruder and coincides with the theoretical value calculated by logarithmic rule of mixture. The blend of PPO and cross-linked triallyl isocyanurate is most effective for lowering the permittivity and loss tangent owing to the suppression of the orientation polarization of matrix. In contrast, 4,4'-(1,3-phenylene diisopropylidene) bisaniline, which has amine unit in its structure, increases the permittivity as well as loss tangent of the composite, but it has the ability to densify the matrix resin and the interfacial adhesion between the matrix and filler to improves flexural strength and modulus.

  • Stressed liquid crystals, SLCs, consist of a lowdensity polymer network dispersed in a nematic host. We induced stress by shearing the material. Alignment layers are not required because the liquid crystal director uniformly aligns along the direction of shear. The shearing stress also eliminates light scattering and results in sub-millisecond switching speeds, making them good candidates for video display applications.

  • Pure and fine, two-component titanate powders (barium titanate, calcium titanate etc.) were synthesized by an ethylene glycol method. Titanium isopropoxide and other metal ionic salts were dissolved in liquid-type ethylene glycol without any precipitation. In non-aqueous system, the amount of ethylene glycol affected the solubility and homogeneity of metal cation sources in the solution. At the optimum amount of the polymer, the metal ions were dispersed effectively in solution and a homogeneous polymeric network was formed. Most of the synthesized powders had sub-micron or nano-size primary particles after calcination and the agglomerated calcined powders were easily ground by ball milling process. All synthesized titanate powders had stable crystallization behavior at low temperature and high specific surface area after ball milling. The crystallization behavior and the microstructures of the calcined powders were affected on the ethylene glycol content.

  • In this paper, the response characteristics of organic gases were investigated by using quartz crystal microbalance(Q.C.M) with different coating materials. The method for pattern was discussed in order to develope gas sensing system using neural network and pattern recognition. we analyzed the response characteristics by the area of frequency shift, which mean affinities of gases for coating material. The results shows that the Parameter made by the area of frequency shift has possibility to be used for pattern recognition and neural network. we found that each gas had different decrease pattern for coating material.

  • A hydrophilic macromolecular network containing hydrophobic moieties has been prepared by free radical copolymerization of acrylamide and styrene in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and its potential as controlled drug delivery carrier was evaluated with tetracycline as a model antibiotic drug. The amount of drug was assayed spectrophotometrically. The network was characterized by optical microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy and structural parameters such as average molecular weight between cross1inks ($M_c$), cross1ink density (q) and number of elastically effective chains ($V_e$) were evaluated. It was found that with increasing concentration of PVA, ST and MBA in the hydrogel, the release rate initially increases but after definite concentrations of the above components the release rate falls. In the case of AM, release rate constantly decreases with increasing AM concentration in the hydrogel.

  • An artificial neural network (ANN) was used to study the relationship between the glass transition temperature (T$_{g}$) and the structure of homopolymers. The input is very important for the ANN. In this paper, six kinds of input vectors were designed for the ANN. Of the six approaches, the best one gave the is T$_{g}$ of 251 polymers with a standard deviation of 8 K and a maximum error of 29 K. The trained ANN also predicted the T$_{g}$ of 20 polymers which are not included in the 251 polymers with a standard deviation of 7 K and a maximum error of 21 K. 21 K.

  • The synthesis and characterization of polymers for organic Metal/Insulator/Metal(MIM) devices were investigated from LB films. The physicochemical properties of the LB films were examined by UV absorption spectrum and AFM. The AFM images showed for network structure of polyurethane monolayer that the film formed an unsymmetry mesh with intermolecular interaction within the large scale. The stable images are probably due to a strong interaction between the monolayer film and Si substrate. We are unable to obtain molecular resolution in images of the films but did see a marked contrast between images of the bare substrate and those with the network structure film deposited onto it.

  • The thermal properties of epoxy resin/siloxane for the electrical insulation were investigated by using dynamic DSC run method. As the heating rate increased, the peak temperature on dynamic DSC curve increased. From the linear relation on the Kissinger plot the curing reaction activation energy and pre-exponential factor could be obtained. The curing activation energy from the straight line of the Kissinger plot was 46.72 kJ/mol.

  • PURPOSE. Polymer infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) materials, also called hybrid ceramics, are new materials in dental market. The manufacturer of the PICN material VITA Enamic suggests 3 different finishing procedures for this new material. In the present study, surface roughness and color differences caused from different finishing procedures of VITA Enamic were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 120 specimens were prepared in dimensions $2{\times}10{\times}12mm$ from VITA Enamic hybrid ceramic blocks with 'high translucency' and 'translucency 2M2' shades. The specimens were divided into 8 groups. For each group, different finishing procedures suggested by the manufacturer were performed. Surface roughness values were determined by a tactile portable profilometer. Color changes were evaluated using a clinical spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc comparison. The significance level was set at ${\alpha}=0.05$. RESULTS. The roughest surfaces were observed in Glaze Groups. Their surface roughness values were similar to that of the control group. Clinical Kit and Technical Kit groups did not show a statistically significant difference regarding surface roughness (P>.05). The largest color difference regarding ${\Delta}E_{00}$ was observed in Clinical Kit finishing groups. There were also statistically significant color changes between the groups (P<.05). However, all the groups showed clinically acceptable color change (${\Delta}E_{00}$<2.25) except Clinical Kit Groups (${\Delta}E_{00}$>2.25). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of the present study, it may be suggested that finishing the VITA Enamic restorations by Technical Kit instead of Glaze and Clinical Kit gives better clinical performance in regard to surface roughness and shade matching.

  • Mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of polymer composites can be improved simultaneously by incorporating carbon fibers (CFs), which are beneficial for improving the mechanical properties, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which are advantageous for improving the conductive properties. In this study, MWCNTs were incorporated into carbon long fiber thermoplastic (CLFT), which has excellent mass production processability and excellent mechanical properties, to control electrical and thermal properties. The mechanical and electrical properties of the prepared composites were most significantly influenced by the amount of filler incorporated. On the other hand, the thermal properties were improved due to the formation of a filler network interconnected by the incorporation of MWCNTs. By adjusting the filler amount, filler composition, and filler network structure of MWCNT-incorporated CLFT, the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties could be controlled.
