  • The changes in the wet pressing response of old corrugated container(OCC) stock depending on the beating treatment and the addition of polymer aids were investigated with laboratory roll press instrument. Two types of polymer aids, such as high molecular weight polymer with low charge density and low molecular weight polymer with high charge density, were applied in this study. The more beaten OCC stock showed the lower dryness after wet pressing. The addition of polymer aids had great influences on the wet pressing efficiency and paper properties. The dryness after wet pressing was increased by the addition of polymer aids, but the pattern of changes in dryness were different depending on the type of polymer and the properties of stock. The higher molecular weight polymer aids showed the greater increase in the dryness. The properties of paper such as air permeability, bulk, formation, tensile strength were also greatly affected by the addition of polymer aids.

  • Nonclassical pathway of crystallization has been utilized to modify the properties and morphologies of inorganic and organic/inorganic materials. In here, the polymer-directed crystallization method has been applied to the pharmaceutical active ingredient to assess the applicability for as a particle engineering tool. The polymer-directed crystallization was successful to modifying the crystal size, habit and morphology, but it was not effective to discover the novel polymorphs of Sibutramine (SB). SB was selected as a model drug and polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyethylene imine (PEI) and chitosan (CHI) were added as a crystallization pathway modifier. SB was crystallized via drowning crystallization using methanol or ethanol as a solvent and water as a non-solvent. The significant interactions between polymer and the drug were confirmed by measuring the solubility of the drug in presence of polymer during the crystallization. The crystal forms of SB are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope (OM). The polymer-directed crystallization seems to be able to modify the crystal properties of pharmaceutical active ingredient, which is critical in determining the bioavailability, processability, and stability.

  • In this study, the mechanisms of the three steps (the polymer deposition step, the polymer etching step and the Si etching step) that constitute the Bosch process were investigated. The effects of radicals and ions on each step were quantitatively analyzed by comparing the simulated aspect ratio dependency of the deposition or etch rate with the experimental results. In the polymer deposition step, fluorocarbon polymer is deposited by chemical reactions of $CF_x$ radicals, of which the reaction probability is 0.13. Although the polymer etching step and the Si etching step were conducted under the same conditions, the etching mechanisms of polymer and Si were found to be quite different. In the polymer etching step, both chemical etching and physical sputter-etching contribute to the polymer etching. Whereas, in the Si etching step, Si is chemically etched by F radicals, of which the reactivity is greatly increased by the bombardment of energetic ions.

  • Three kinds of porous polymer were synthesized using a solvothermal of tri-4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI-trimer) and different diamino monomers. The effects of the synthesis conditions and the monomer selection on the synthesis of porous polymer properties were studied. The results show that the synthesis of $NH_2$-containing monomer molecules smaller the microporous polymers was easy to implement; the specific surface areas of the polymers are related to the monomer ratio and the reaction time. The results show that the synthesized porous polymer had good hydrogen storage performance; the hydrogen storage ability improved with the addition of heterocyclic nitrogen.

  • The fabrication of a thin-film transistor backplane and a liquid-crystal display using printing processes can eliminate the need for photolithography and offers the potential to reduce the manufacturing costs. In this study, we prepare contact via structures through a poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer insulator layer using inkjet printing. When droplets of silver ink composed of a polymer solvent are placed onto the polymer insulator and annealed at high temperatures, the silver ink penetrates the interior of the polymer and generates conducting paths between the top and bottom metal lines through the partial dissolution and swelling of the polymer. The electrical property of various contact via-hole interconnections is investigated using a semiconductor characterization system.

  • Application of liquid crystal (LC) materials to a flexible device is challenging because the bending of LC displays easily causes change in thickness of the LC layer and orientation of LCs, resulting in deterioration in a displayed image quality. In this work, we demonstrate a prototype device combining a flexible polymer substrate and an optically isotropic LC-polymer composite in which the device consists of interdigitated in-plane switching electrodes deposited on a flexible colorless polyimide substrate and the composite consisting of nano-sized LC droplets in a polymer matrix. The device can keep good electro-optic characteristics even when it is in a bending state because the LC orientation is not disturbed in both voltage-off and -on states. The proposed device shows a high potential to be applicable for future flexible LC devices.

  • There has been much interest in incorporating nanoscale voids into dielectric materials in order to reduce their k value, and thus in producing low-k porous interdielectric materials. One approach to the development of low-k dielectric materials is the templated polycondensation of organosilicate precursors in the presence of a thermally labile, organic polymeric porogen. The other is SiOCH films have low dielectric constant as well as good mechanical strength and high thermal stability through PECVD. In this article we explore the nanopore generation mechanism of organosilicate film using star-shape porogen and SiOCH film using bis-trimethylsilylmethane (BTMSM) precursor.
