This paper presents results of a non-linear finite element analysis of axially loaded slender hollow structural section (HSS) columns, strengthened using high modulus carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) longitudinal sheets. The model was developed and verified against both experimental and other analytical models. Both geometric and material nonlinearities, which are attributed to the column's initial imperfection and plasticity of steel, respectively, are accounted for. Residual stresses have also been modeled. The axial strength in the experimental study was found to be highly dependent on the column's imperfection. Consequently, no specific correlation was established experimentally between strength gain and amount of CFRP. The model predicted the ultimate loads and failure modes quite reasonably and was used to isolate the effects of CFRP strengthening from the columns' imperfections. It was then used in a parametric study to examine columns of different slenderness ratios, imperfections, number of CFRP layers, and level of residual stresses. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of high modulus CFRP in increasing stiffness and strength of slender columns. While the columns' imperfections affect their actual strengths before and after strengthening, the percentage gain in strength is highly dependent on slenderness ratio and CFRP reinforcement ratio, rather than the value of imperfection.
Delamination is the most common failure mode in layered composite materials. The author have found that the electrical potential change (EPC) technique using response surfaces method is very effective in assessment delamination in basalt fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate composite pipe by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS). In the present study, the effect of the electrodes number on the method is investigated using FEM analyses for delamination location/size detection by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. Three cases of electrodes number are analyzed here are eight, twelve and sixteen electrodes, afterwards, the delamination is introduced into between the three layers [$0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$]s laminates pipe, split into eight, twelve and sixteen scenarios for cases of eight, twelve and sixteen electrodes respectively. Response surfaces are adopted as a tool for solving inverse problems to estimate delamination location/size from the measured EPC of all segments between electrodes. As a result, it was revealed that the estimation performances of delamination location/size depends on the electrodes number. For ECS, the high number of electrodes is required to obtain high estimation performances of delamination location/size. The illustrated results are in excellent agreement with solutions available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.
A low-power $1{\times}2$ polymeric thermo-optic switch with a trench structure is proposed and fabricated. The trench structure in the optimized region slows down the heat flow from the electrodes, which contributes to the reduction of power consumption. The temperature distribution in the polymer layers has been adjusted to increase the temperature gradient between the two arms of the Y-branch. For comparison, a $1{\times}2$ polymeric thermo-optic switch with no trench structure is fabricated together on the same substrate. In the device with a trench structure, the measured crosstalk is less than -17.0 dB for TE polarization.-15.0 dB for TM polarization. The power consumption is about 66 mW, which is 25% less than that of the device with no trench structure.
Polyether-clay nanocomposite was not polymerized with stearyltrimethylammonium ion exchanged montmorillonite, but it was self-polymerizable when heated with both stearyltrimethylammpmoim and m-phenylenediammonium ions intercalated montmorillonite to form polyether-clay nanocomposites. Molcular disperion of montmorillonite within the crosslinked epoxy matrix verified using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy found that the final product contains a uniform dispersion of exfoliated $10{\AA}$ thin clay layers seperated by $250{\sim}500{\AA}$of polyether polymer, thus verifying the nanocomposite structure.
The magnetron reactive ion etching (RIE) characteristics of polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC grown on $SiO_{2}$/Si substrate by APCVD were investigated. Poly 3C-SiC was etched by $CHF_{3}$ gas, which can form a polymer as a function of side wall protective layers, with additive $O_{2}$ and Ar gases. Especially, it was performed in magnetron RIE, which can etch SiC at a lower ion energy than a commercial RIE system. Stable etching was achieved at 70 W and the poly 3C-SiC was undamaged. The etch rate could be controlled from $20\;{\AA}/min$ to $400\;{\AA}/min$ by the manipulation of gas flow rates, chamber pressure, RF power, and electrode gap. The best vertical structure was improved by the addition of 40 % $O_{2}$ and 16 % Ar with the $CHF_{3}$ reactive gas. Therefore, poly 3C-SiC etched by magnetron RIE can expect to be applied to M/NEMS applications.
Applications of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for retrofitting, strengthening and repairing concrete structures have been expanded dramatically in the last decade. FRPs have high specific strength and stiffness compared to conventional construction materials, e.g., steel. Ease of preparation and installation, resistance to corrosion, versatile fabrication and adjustable mechanical properties are other advantages of the FRPs. However, there are major concerns about long-term performance, serviceability and durability of FRP applications in concrete structures. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures need to be implemented. This paper presents a study on investigating the application of Rayleigh wave for detecting debonding defect in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures. A time-of-flight (ToF) method is proposed to determine the location of a debonding between the FRP and concrete using Rayleigh wave. A series of numerical case studies are carried out to demonstrate the capability of the proposed debonding detection method. In the numerical case studies, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed to simulate the Rayleigh wave propagation and scattering at the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure. Absorbing layers are employed in the 3D FE model to reduce computational cost in simulating the practical size of the FRP-retrofitted structure. Different debonding sizes and locations are considered in the case studies. The results show that the proposed ToF method is able to accurately determine the location of the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure.

Photonic crystal solar cells have the potential for addressing the disparate length scales in polymer photovoltaic materials, thereby confronting the major challenge in solar cell technology: efficiency. One must achieve simultaneously an efficient absorption of photons with effective carrier extraction. Unfortunately the two processes have opposing requirements. Efficient absorption of light calls for thicker PV active layers whereas carrier transport always benefits from thinner ones, and this dichotomy is at the heart of an efficiency/cost conundrum that has kept solar energy expensive relative to fossil fuels. This dichotomy persists over the entire solar spectrum but increasingly so near a semiconductor's band edge where absorption is weak. We report a 2-D, photonic crystal morphology that enhances the efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells relative to conventional planar cells. The morphology is developed by patterning an organic photoactive bulk heterojunction blend of Poly(3-(2-methyl-2-hexylcarboxylate) thiophene-co-thiophene) and PCBM via PRINT, a nano-embossing method that lends itself to large area fabrication of nanostructures. The photonic crystal cell morphology increases photocurrents generally, and particularly through the excitation of resonant modes near the band edge of the organic PV material. The device performance of the photonic crystal cell showed a nearly doubled increase in efficiency relative to conventional planar cell designs. Photonic crystals can also enhance performance of other optoelectronic devices including organic laser.

The mechanical property of a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is subjected to two elements, carbon fiber and polymer resin, in a first step and the selection of multi-layered structure is second one. Many combination of fabric layers, i.e. plainweave, twillweave, can be derived for candidates of test specimen used for a basic mechanical components so that a reliable identification of dynamic nature of possible multi-layered structures are essential during the development of CFRP based component system. In this paper, three kinds of multi-layered structure specimens were prepared and the dynamic characteristics of service specimens were conducted through classical modal test process with impact hammer. In addition, the design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility function was applied for the measured response data so that the response sensitivity for each resonance frequency were compared for three CFRP test specimens. Finally, the evaluation of CFRP specimen over different multi-layered fabric structures are commented from the experimental consequences.
A bendable electronic module has been developed for a mobile application by using a low-cost roll-to-roll manufacturing process. In flexible embedded electronic module, a thin silicon chip was embedded in a polymer-based encapsulating adhesive between flexible copper clad polyimide layers. To confirm reliability and durability of prototype bendable module, the following tests were conducted: Moisture sensitivity level, thermal shock test, high temperature & high humidity storage test, and pressure cooker tester. Those experiments to induce failure of the module due to temperature variations and moisture are the experiment to verify the reliability. Failure criterion was 20% increase in bump resistance from the initial value. The mechanism of the increase of the bump resistance was analyzed by using non-destructive X-ray analysis and scanning acoustic microscopy. During the pressure cooker test (PCT), delamination occurred at the various interfaces of the bendable embedded modules. To investigate the failure mechanism, moisture diffusion analysis was conducted to the pressure cooker's test. The hygroscopic characteristics of the encapsulating polymeric materials were experimentally determined. Analysis results have shown moisture saturation process of flexible module under high temperature/high humidity and high atmosphere conditions. Based on these results, stress factor and failure mechanism/mode of bendable embedded electronic module were obtained.

This study investigated the behaviour of the simply supported hollow steel tube (HST) beams, either concrete filled or unfilled when strengthened with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. Eight specimens with varied tubes thickness (sections classification 1 and 3) were all tested experimentally under static flexural loading, four out of eight were filled with normal concrete (CFST beams). Particularly, the partial CFRP strengthening scheme was used, which wrapped the bottom-half of the beams cross-section (U-shaped wrapping), in order to use the efficiency of high tensile strength of CFRP sheets at the tension stress only of simply supported beams. In general, the results showed that the CFRP sheets significantly improved the ultimate strength and energy absorption capacities of the CFST beams with very limited improvement on the related HST beams. For example, the load and energy absorption capacities for the CFST beams (tube section class 1) were increased about 20% and 32.6%, respectively, when partially strengthened with two CFRP layers, and these improvements had increased more (62% and 38%) for the same CFST beams using tube class 3. However, these capacities recorded no much improvement on the related unfilled HST beams when the same CFRP strengthening scheme was adopted.
