  • Various studies have been conducted to improve silica dispersion of silica filled tire tread compounds; among them, silica wet masterbatch (WMB) technology is known to be suitable for manufacturing silica filled compounds that have high silica content and high dispersibility. Till now, the WMB study is focused on the natural rubber (NR) or emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber (ESBR) that does not have a silica-affinity functional group, and a study of NR or ESBR having a silica-affinity functional group is still not well known. Unlike the dry masterbatch technology, the WMB technology can solve the problems associated with the high Mooney viscosity when applied to silica-friendly rubber. However, a coagulant suitable for each functional group has not yet been determined. Therefore, in this study, different coagulant applied silica WMB was prepared by applying calcium chloride, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid by using a carboxyl group functionalized reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer ESBR. The evaluation of the WMB compounds revealed that the calcium chloride added WMB compound showed excellent silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and rolling resistance.

  • To prove pseudo-homopolymerization(PHP) method indirectly for general system which includes more than one growing radicals per particle, Mayo-Lewis equation of bulk copolymer system was derived form probability equation about instantaneous copolymer composition of emulsion copolymer system during interval II. From Extended Smith-Ewart equation proposed by Ballard et al. in emulsion copolymerization, exact solution was obtained for 0-1 system (i.e., the system containing no more than one growing radical per particle). From the exact solution, average number of radicals per particle and instantaneous copolymer composition were predicted to reach the steady state which a few minutes. So the reliability of this approximation method could by proved directly for 0-1 system. Styrene-butadiene(St-Bu) and Styrene-methyl methacrylate (St-MMA) system were used for model calculations.

  • Aqueous polyurethane(PU) anionomer dispersions were prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polytetramethylene adipate glycol(PTAd) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) as potential anionic centers. The effects of polyol molecular weight(Mn) on the state of dispersion, thermal, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties and swelling of emulsion cast film were determined. With increasing Mn of PTAd, particle size of emulsion and soft segment T$_{g}$ decreased, and solvent swell, emulsion viscosity, and hard segment $T_{g}$ increased. Tensile strength showed minimum with PTAd 1000, and elongation at break generally increased with the Mn of PTAd. These results were possibly nterpreted in terms of soft segment-hard segment phase separation and crystallization of high molecular weight PTAd.

  • Recently, the protection of construction is demanded with environmental pollution. These protect modes are use of concrete admixture, coat of protective polymer and impregnate of surface with chemicals etc. The most widely used impregnation is economical and effective. The define of Impregnation for construction protect is reacted in and consolidated substrate after absorbed. The impregnation agents are Polyesters, Acrylic monomers, Epoxy and Silicone derivatives. Commonly, because the Silane has good water repellency and environmental advantages that it widely used to water proofing agents, dampproofing agents and absorption reducer for concrete of bridges. When application of Silane, it occurs pollution and harmfulness as included organic solvent. The manufactures have tired to emulsification of Silane for the reducing of the defects. The Silane emulsion is vary unstable and does not stored long periods, and it is diminished in good properties with internal reaction. In this study we tried to emulsification of Silane for effectiveness improvement and reduce pollution and hazard and discussed properties variation of emulsion. The Silane emulsions are achieved emulsifying with W/O and O/W type surfactants. It used 0.24% PVA as protective colloid and stable phase is creamy. The creamy Silane emulsion performance as the penetration depth and water absorption rate are above 4 mm and below 0.1. It stable about 6 month at room temperature.

  • As model waterborne acrylic coatings, mono-dispersed poly(butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate) copolymer latexes of random copolymer and core/shell type graft copolymer were prepared by seeded multi-staged emulsion polymerization with particle size of $180{\sim}200$ nm using semi-batch type process. Sodium lauryl sulfate and potassium persulfate were used as an emulsifier and an initiator, respectively. The effect of particle texture including core/shell phase ratio, glass transition temperature and crosslinking density, and film forming temperature on the film formation and final properties of film was investigated using SEM, AFM, and UV in this study. The film formation behavior of model latex was traced simultaneously by the weight loss measurement and by the change of tensile properties and UV transmittance during the entire course of film formation. It was found that the increased glass transition temperature and higher crosslinking degree of latex resulted in the delay of the onset of coalescence of particles by interdiffusion during film forming process. This can be explained qualitatively in terms of diffusion rate of polymer chains. However, the change of weight loss during film formation was insensitive to discern each film forming stages-I, II and III.

  • Polymer/silicate nanocomposites were prepared via two-step manufacturing process: a master batch preparation and then mixing with matrix polymer. A hybrid of PMMA and Na-MMT with exfoliated structure was first prepared by emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of Na-MMT. For the case that SAN24, miscible with PMMA, is used as matrix, we could prepare a nanocomposite with exfoliated structure. However, SAN31 nanocomposite shows the aggregation and/or reordering of the silicate layers due to the immiscibility between SAN31 and PMMA.

  • Core-shell polymers of inorganic/organic pair, which are consisted of both core and shell component, were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization using ethyl methacrylate (EMA) as a shell monomer and ammonium persulfate as initiator. We found that $CaCO_3$ core should be prepared by adding 2.0wt% SDBS(sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate), $CaCO_3$ core/PEMA shell polymerization was carried out on the surface of $CaCO_3$ particle during EMA shell polymerization in the core-shell polymer preparation. The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring the degree on decomposition of $CaCO_3$ by HCI solution, thermal decomposition of polymer composite on thermogravimetric analyzer, glass transition temperature on differential scanning calorimeter, and morphology using scanning electron microscope.

  • Baroplastic poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)/polystyrene (PS) blends were prepared by mixing PBA and PS emulsions synthesized by cationic and anionic surfactant, respectively. Interestingly, the heterocoagulation of nanoparticles have found to be affected strongly by emulsion concentration but the blends have been prepared with almost same compositions regardless of the amount of reactants. Utilizing this method, PBA/PS/Si hybrid nano-blends were prepared successfully via electrostatic attraction forces between PBA, PS and silica nanoparticles. The hybrid nano-blend having 2 or 5 wt% of silica was then processed to a semi-transparent film at $25^{\circ}C$ under 13.8 MPa for 10 min, which showed 3.0 MPa of tensile strength and 25 MPa of elastic modulus. Therefore, the heterocoagulation technique can be used for preparing baroplastics with uniform compositions of polymer and silica nanoparticles.

  • The pioglitazone loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) nanospheres were prepared by emulsion-evaporation method and optimized for particle size and entrapment efficiency. The optimized particles were 125~170 nm in size with narrow size distribution and showed above 85% entrapment efficiency at 30% of pioglitazone loading when prepared with 3% w/v of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a surfactant. These particulate carriers exhibited a controlled in vitro release of pioglitazone for 40 days at a nearly constant rate. The pioglitazone loaded PLGA nanospheres were not only effective to reduce the blood sugar level of diabetic rats but also non-toxic for the animal body, in particular for sensitive organs like kidney, liver, heart, lung and spleen. These results indicate that PLGA nanospheres have a great potential for oral delivery of pioglitazone.

  • Sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization method to absorb excess water in concrete. Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. Acrylic acid (AA) was neutralized by aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (8 M). Different amount of N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) was used as a crosslinking agent to change crosslinking density of the synthesized PAANa. The size distribution of synthesized particles was measured by particle size analyzer. Swelling ratio of crosslinked PAANa was evaluated from the equation in D. I. water, cement aqueous solution, and $Ca(OH)_2$ aqueous solution. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with PAANa. Incorporation of 1.0 wt% PAANa into cement increased compressive and flexural strength approximately 30% and 10%, respectively, compared with those of ordinary portland cement.
