The control of the rheological properties of a fluid during processing is important and can determine the efficiency of the production in addition to the performance of the final product. The vast majority of process fluids are viscoelastic, hence an instrument that measures both the viscous and elastic properties of the material during processing would be of great practical use. However, most in-line instruments commercially available to date are only capable of measuring viscosity at a single shear rate. An in-line rheometer that measures both the viscous and elastic properties of fluids over a wide range of shear rates simultaneously has been described in a previous publication (Glasscock et at., 2003) in which the results of measurements on flowing sunflower oil were presented. Before this instrument can be used in an industrial situation, it must be demonstrated that the generated results are the same as, or bear some fixed relationship to, the results obtained by conventional off-line rheometers. To this end, the present investigation describes the measurements of a standard reference fluid, polyisobutylene dissolved in 2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane, labelled SRM2490 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA. The results obtained using the in-line rheometer show remarkably good correlation for viscosity, using a modified CoxMerz rule, with the results supplied with the reference material from NIST.
Eudragit $RS^{\circledR}$ polymer was used as a wall material for the microencapsulation of aspirin by a phase separation method from chloroform-cyclohexane system with 5% polyisobutylene (PIB) in cyclohexane, and microcapsules obtained were evaluated by particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), drug release and drug stability test. With PIB as a coacervation inducing agent, smooth and tight microcapsules with less aggregation were obtained. Below 1 : 0.3 core-wall ratio, it was possible to coat individual particle. Variation of production conditions showed that increasing the proportion of wall material, particle size and wall thickness of microcapsules and the concentration of paraffin wax in cyclohexane as a sealant sustained drug release rates effectively. SEM confirmed that larger microcapsules after drug release did not rupture into smaller particles but contained a few small pores on the surface. Aspirin release from Eudragit $RS^{\circledR}$ coated microcapsules was independent of the pH of medium, and the mechanism of drug release from non-sealed and sealed microcapsules appeared to fit Higuchi matrix model kinetics. Aspirin in the mixture of aspirin microcapsules and sodium bicarbonate was by far more stable than that in the mixture of pure aspirin and sodium bicarbonate.
This paper is a continuation of our previous $paper,^1$ and deals with Eq.(1) (see the text), which was theoretically derived in the $paper,^1$$ [{\eta}]^f\; and\; [{\eta}]^0$ is the intrinsic viscosity at stress f and f = O, respectively. Equation (1) predicts how $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ changes with stress f, relaxation time ${\beta}_2$ of flow unit 2 and a constant $c_2$ related with the elasticity of molecular spring of flow unit 2. In this paper, Eq.(1) is applied to a biopolymer, e.g., poly (${\gamma}$-benzyl L-glutamate), and nonbiopolymers, e.g., polyisobutylene, polystyrene, polydimethylsiloxane and cellulose triacetate. It was found that the $c_2$ factor is zero for non-biopolymers while $c_2{\neq}0$ for biopolymers as found $previously.^1$ Because of the non-Newtonian nature of the solutions, the ratio $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ drops from its unity with increasing f. We found that the smaller the ${\beta}_2,$ the larger the $f_c$ at which the viscosity ratio drops from the unity, vice versa.
