In order to prepare polyion complex membranes useful for the separation of water-alcohol by pervaporation, k-carrageenan containing artionic sulfate groups in the backbone and good hydrophilicity was selected for the polyanion membrane material and poly{1,3-bis[4-butyl pyridinium] propane. bromide}, one of the polycations synthesized in our lab and containing cationic pyridinium groups., was used. The polyion complex membranes were prepared by the ion complex formation between kcarrageenan films and poly{1,3-bis[4-butyl pyridinium] propane. bromide}. On the formation process of polyion complex membranes, the way of potyion complex formation was carefully studied. In order to study the effect of the morphology on the permeation properties of the polyion complex membranes, which is one of the important factors affecting on the permeation properties of membranes but rarely studied, the microstructure behaviors of the polyion complex mem6ranes in methanol-water mixtures with different compositions Were also studied with x-ray diffractometry and polarizing microscopy.

Deoxyribonucelic acid (DNA) molecules have a huge molecular weight so that DNA was reported to be a promising natural polymer to give durable films. Among many applications of DNA, the authors focused their attention on separation membranes derived from DNA because membranes will play an important role in environmental and energy related processes. DNA-polyion complex membranes were prepared from DNA and corresponding polycations. The DNA-polyion complex membranes showed chiral separation ability toward racemic amino acid mixtures.

Pervaporation has become important as a method to separate liquid mixtures, sepecially azeotropic and close boiling-point mixtures. Especially, water-alcohol separations have been carried out a lot because of the practical interests in the industries. However, outstanding membranes with high selectivity and high permeability have not been available in common use yet. In order to separate selectively out the water mixed with alcohols with an aim of the purification of the alcohols, a membrane has tO have excellent affinity to water. Among the hydrophilic polymers, polyacrylic acid and poly(vinyl alcohol) are used widely. In recent years, ionomers and polyion complexes, better hydrophitic materials, start to be used. The polyion complex membranes, consisting of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polycation, showed excellent permeation rates and selectivities. It was known that among the polycations, ioneries, which have quaternary ammonium groups in the backbone chain, were more effective in giving membranes of higher permselectivities. On this base, syntheses and characterizations of the polycations, with different chemical structures from the published ones, for the polyion complex membrane formation were studied in this paper.
An emzymatic bioanode for a glucose/oxygen biofuel cell was prepared by the sequential coating of carbon nanotube (CNT), charge transfer complex (CTC) based on tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), glucose oxidase (GOx), and polyion complex (mixture of poly-L-lysine hydrobromide and poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)) on a glassy carbon electrode. A biocathode was also prepared by the sequential coating of CNT, bilirubin oxidase (BOD), 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), and polyion complex. The effect of CNT and CTC on the electrochemical performance was investigated. The biofuel cell exhibited a promising performance with maximum power densities of 3.6, 10.1, and $46.5{\mu}W/cm^2$ at 5, 20, and 200 mM of glucose concentration, respectively. The result indicates that the biofuel cell architecture prepared in this study can be used in the development of biofuel cells and biosensors.
Two-dimensionally cross-linked ultrathin films of poly(maleic acid-alt-methyl vinyl ether) (MA-MVE) and poly(allylamine) (PAA) were produced by using sodium dioctadecyl sulfate (2C18S) as the monolayer template for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) depositio n. The template molecules were subsequently removed by thermal treatment followed by extraction. The polyion-complexed monolayers of three components, i.e., template 2C18S, co-spread PAA, and subphase MA-MVE, were formed at the air-water interface. Their monolayer properties were studied by the surface pressure-area isotherm. The monolayers were transferred on solid substrates as Y type. The polyion-complexed LB films and the resulting network films were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cross-linking to form a polymer network was achieved by amide or imide formation through heat treatment under a vacuum. SEM observation of the film on a porous fluorocarbon membrane filter (pore diameter 0.1 ㎛) showed covering of the pores by four layers in the polyion complex state. Extraction by chloroform followed by heat treatment produced hole defects in the film.

The purpose of this study is to develop novel nanoparticles based on polyion complex formation between low molecular weight water-soluble chitosan (LMWSC) and all-trans retinoic acid (atRA). LMWSC nanoparticles encapsulating atRA based on polyion complex were prepared by mixing of atRA into LMWSC aqueous solution using ultrasonication. In FTIR spectra, the carbonyl group of atRA at 1690 $cm^{-1}$ disappeared or decreased when ion complexes were formed between LMWSC and atRA. In ${1}^H$ NMR spectra, specific peaks of atRA disappeared when atRA-encapsulated LMWSC (RAC) nanoparticles were reconstituted into $D_{2}O$ while specific peaks both of atRA and LMWSC appeared in $D_{2}O$/DMSO (1/3, v/v) mixture. XRD patterns also showed that the crystal peaks of atRA were disappeared by encapsulation into LMWSC nanoparticles. LMWSC nanoparticles encapsulating atRA have spherical shapes with particle size below 200 nm. The mechanism of encapsulation of atRA into LMWSC nanoparticles was thought to be an ion complex formation between LMWSC and atRA. LMWSC nanoparticles showed high atRA loading efficiency over 90$\%$ (w/w). AtRA was continuously released from nanoparticles over 10 days. In in vitro cell cytotoxicity test, free atRA showed higher cytotoxic effect against CT 26 colon carcinoma cell line on 1 day. However, RAC nanoparticles showed similar cytotoxicity against CT 26 cells on 2 day. These results suggest the potential for the introduction of LMWSC nanoparticles into various biomedical fields such as drug delivery.
The use of preformed copolymers and their cross-linking have been attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fragility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and to make their technological applications. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And, when the polymer structure was properly designed, concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper, the monolayers of the polymers which were polyion-complexed with PAA at the air-water interface can be transferred onto solid substrates such as porous fluorocarbon membranes filter and quartz crystal microbalance. The properties of the monolayers and the LB films will be discussed by .pi.-A isotherms, FT-IR, DSC, deposition ratio, QCM, and SEM. In addition, it was attempted to investigate the response characteristics of polymer LB films to the organic gases by the use of QCM.
Ultrathin networks of itaconic acid copolymers and poly(allylamine) were produced by a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique employing a double-chain amine as a monolayer template which was subsequently removed by extraction after thermal crosslinking. Itaconic acid copolymers used were copoly (itaconic acid-ethyl vinyl ether) and copoly (itaconic acid-n-butyl vinyl ether). The polyion-complexed monolayers of three components consisting of template amine, itaconic acid copolymer and poly (allylamine) were formed at the air-water interface. The Langmuir film properties have been studied by the surface pressure-area isotherm and fluorescence microscopy. The monolayers were transferred on solid substrates and were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Two-dimensional polymer networks were formed through imide or amide linkages by heat treatment under vacuum. The heat-treated films were extracted with chloroform after immersion in aq. sodium chloride to remove the template amines. SEM observation of a LB film on a porous fluorocarbon membrane filter with pore diameter of 0.1 μm showed covering of the pores by six layers in the polyion complex state.

In this work, the physicochemical properties for permeant molecules and polyion complex membrane prepared by complexation between SA and chitosan were determined by using molecular modeling methods, and the permeation behaviors of water and alcohol molecules through the PIC membrane have been investigated. In the case of penetrant molecule, the experimental results showed that the prepared membrane was excellent pervaporation performance result in most solution, and the selectivity and permeability of the membrane were dependent on the molecular size, the polarity and the hydrophilic surface of permeant organics. However, the separation behavior of methanol aqueous solution exhibited other permeation tendency with other feed solutions and contradictory result. That is, the membrane were preferentially permeable to methanol over water despite water molecule has stronger polarity and small molecular size than methanol molecule. In this study, the results were discussed from the viewpoint of chemical and physical properties between permeant molecules and membrane in the diffusion state.
