  • In this paper, we propose an optimal interest point extraction method to support shape-base image classification and indexing for image database by applying a dynamic threshold that reflects the characteristics of the shape contour. The threshold is determined dynamically by comparing the contour length ratio of the original shape and the approximated polygon while the algorithm is running. Because our algorithm considers the characteristics of the shape contour, it can minimize the number of interest points. For n points of the contour, the proposed algorithm has O(nlogn) computational cost on an average to extract the number of m optimal interest points. Experiments were performed on the 70 synthetic shapes of 7 different contour types and 1100 fish shapes. It shows the average optimization ratio up to 0.92 and has 14% improvement, compared to the fixed threshold method. The shape features extracted from our proposed method can be used for shape-based image classification, indexing, and similarity search via normalization.

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986). Revitalizing school geometry through Dissection-Motion Operations. Sch. Sci. Math. 86(3), 235-246] and [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1990).

  • Using three consecutive years' harvested rices and their starches isolated from rice flours by alkaline method, it was found that no significant aging effect on rice flour and starch was observed based on following results. Proximate data of flours or starches showed in similarity, except high level of crude fat in rice flour and rice starch harvested in 2002. In SEM, the surface of aged rice flour had slightly layered shape due to possible abrasion during storage, and that of aged starch showed more smooth and less rigid polygonal shape. X-ray diffraction patterns of flours and starches were all A type, and crystallinity of rice starch harvested in 2000 had the smallest. From tristimulus colorimetry (Hunterlab Color), total color difference ($\Delta$E) calculated from L, a, and b gave less color difference with the darkest in 2002 harvested one among flours and the lightest in 2001 one among starches. WBCs of both 2002 rice flour and starch were the lowest among samples studied. At 80$^{\circ}C$, swelling power and solubility of rice starches harvested in 2000, 2001 and 2002 were 14.35, 9.75; 14.04, 9.6; and 12.49, 8.82, respectively. The highest peak viscosities measured by RVA were shown both in 2001 rice flour and in its starch. Starch and milled rice flour harvested in 2000 had higher hydrolytic $\alpha$-amylase, compared to other flour and starch samples.

  • This research works on the effects of drawing conditions on the physical properties of the drawn worsted yarns. The drawn worsted yarns were made by the yarn drawing system under various drawing conditions such as concentration of reducing agent, draw ratio, setting time of drawn yarn, and concentration of oxidizing agent. The drawn worsted yarns from 2/80Nm to 2/90Nm were obtained from 2/60Nm worsted yarns, the surface and cross-sectional shapes and tensile properties of these various specimens were measured and discussed with the various drawing conditions. The drawing of worsted yarn made constituent wool fiber scratched and made it changing to polygonal cross-sectional shape. The tenacity and modulus were increased with draw ratio and concentration of reducing agent. And tensile strain was increased with draw ratio, which decreased with concentration of reducing agent.

  • A strain of Amphidinium species was established from samples collected from the intertidal zone of a sandy beach of Jeju Island, Korea. Its cells were 13.0-15.0 ㎛ in length and 10.0-13.0 ㎛ in width. Its cell shape was round or oval and dorsoventrally flat. A pyrenoid was located in the center of the cell and a nucleus was posteriorly located. Its epicone was small and left-deflecting. Its cingulum had V-shape on the ventral side, forming a ventral ridge and extending to the sulcus. Polygonal amphiesmal vesicles and ring-shaped body scales not described previous were observed on the surface of the cell. Its morphological features were consistent with those of previously described Amphidinium fijiense. Phylogeny based on ITS region and LSU rDNA sequences revealed that this Amphidinium isolate was clearly clustered with other A. fijiense strains, but separated from other Amphidinium species. These results indicate that this Amphidinium isolate is A. fijiense. This study reports its presence for the first time in the intertidal zone of a sandy beach of Jeju Island, Korea.

  • This study was performed to investigate the differentiation and distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT}-immunoreactive cells in the magnacellular preoptic nucleus (MCPO) of the postnatal and adult rat forebrains, utilizing techniques of immunocytochemistry. According to the cell shape and the ratio of long axis versus short axis of cell soma, the ChATimmunoreactive nerve cells in the MCPO were classified into six types: 1) round, 2) oval, 3) elongated, 4) fusiform, 5) triangular, and 6) polygonal types. Frequency distributions of the oval and round nerve cells on the postnatal day (PND) 0 were observed to be high. But in the adult, frequency distributions of the same cells were shown to decrease. Compared to those of the postnatal rats, frequency distributions of elongated, fusiform, triangular, and polygonal nerve cells in the adult were increased. The total mean volumes of ChAT-immunoreactive cell somata in the MCPO of PND 0 rat were the lowest, while those in the PND 17 rat were shown to be the highest and decreased in the adult. The soma volumes of the immunoreactive cells at the PND 17 were evenly distributed, but those in the other developmental stages (e.g. PND 7 and adult) appeared to exhibit unimodal distributions. On the electron micrography, the free ribosomes, polysomes, and rough endoplasmic reticula (RER) of the nerve cells in the MCPO of PND 21 rat forebrains were immunoreactive to ChAT in the tissues untreated with triton X-100. According to the observations in the present study, it is considered that the ChAT-immunoreactive nerve cells in the MCPO of the rat forebrains are differentiated throughout the following processes during the postnatal development: 1) increase in cell soma volumes, 2) development of neurites, 3) increase in the frequency of differentiated cell types, and 4) decrease in cell soma volumes. The ribosomes, polysomes, and RER are considered to be closely related to the intracellular localization and biosynthesis of the ChAT but not Golgi complex.

  • The pollen morphology of 31 taxa, representing all woody species from 12 genera of Fabaceae in Korea, was examined by light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The pollen grains were monad and prolate spheroidal or rarely subprolate in equatorial view. The pollen grain aperture was trizonocolporate or rarely trizonooperculate, which does not occur in the other families of Fabales in Korea. The exine showed a great variety of sculpture pattern, i.e. psilate, microperforate, densely microperforate, perforate, polygonal perforate, macroperforate, macroperforate with granules in holes, polygonal macroperforate, verrucate with pitted perforate striae, verrucate-perforate, granulate, rugulate, reticulate or refined reticulate. The pollen morphological data supported the idea that the genera Echinosophora and Sophora were congeneric. Caragana (Galegeae) was quite close to the Sophora group (Maackia, Sophora and Echinosophora) of the Sophoreae in each measured pollen parameter and exine sculpture pattern. Eleven genera of Fabaceae were recognized based on differences in aperture type, pollen grain shape and exine pattern, and a generic pollen key of the woody Fabaceae in Korea was developed. A key to pollen types of Lespedeza was also suggested. The examined taxa of Coronilla and Wisteria were recognized by their exine patterns.

  • This paper proposes a new discrete curvature error metric to generate LOD meshes. For mesh simplification, discrete curvatures are defined with geometric attributes, such as angles and areas of triangular polygonal model, and dihedral angles without any smooth approximation. They can represent characteristics of polygonal surface well. The new error metric based on them, discrete curvature error metric, increases the accuracy of simplified model by preserving the geometric information of original model and can be used as a global error metric. Also we suggest that LOD should be generated not by a simplification ratio but by an error metric. Because LOD means the degree of closeness between original and each level's simplified model. Therefore discrete curvature error metric needs relatively more computations than known other error metrics, but it can efficiently generate and control LOD meshes which preserve overall appearance of original shape and are recognizable explicitly with each level.
