  • This study was performed to evaluate the strength and durability properties of modified epoxy composites with waste tire chip, recycled coarse aggregate, filler and modified epoxy to improve elongation and elasticity of epoxy. Additionally, for comparing to modified epoxy and unsaturated polyester resin as a binder, unsaturated polyester resin composites were developed in the same condition. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate size and binder content. Tests for the compressive and flexural strength, freezing and thawing and durability for 20 % sulfuric solution were performed. The compressive and flexural strength of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 34.9~61.6 MPa and 10.2~18.3 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. Also, the compressive and flexural strength of unsaturated polyester resin composites were in the range of 44.2~77.8 MPa and 11.3~20.8 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. After 300 cycles of freezing and thawing, weight decrease ratio and durability factor of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 0.8~1.9 % and 95~98, respectively. Accordingly, modified epoxy composites will greatly improve the durability of concrete.

  • This paper is concerned with a study on fracture strength of composites in an adhesive single lap joint. The tests were carried out on joint specimens made with hybrid stacked composites consisting of the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the fracture properties adjacent to adhesive bonded joint of natural fiber reinforced composite specimens. From the results, natural fiber reinforced composites have lower tensile strength than the original polyester. But tensile-shear strength of natural fiber reinforced composites with bamboo layer far from adhesive bond is as high as that of the original polyester adhesive bonded joints. Spew filet at the end of the overlap reduced the stress concentration at the bonded area. Spew fillet and position of bamboo natural fiber layer have a peat effect on the tensile-shear strength of natural fiber reinforced composites including adhesive bonded joints.

  • Novel unsaturated polyester composites with PAN-based nanofiber, stabilized PAN nanofiber, and carbonized nanofiber webs have been fabricated, respectively, and the effects of the nanofiber web content on their electrical resistivity, the thermal stability, dynamic storage modulus, and fracture surfaces were studied. The result demonstrated that the introduction of just one single layer (which is corresponding to 2 wt.%) of the carbonized nanofiber web to unsaturated polyester resin (UPE) could contribute to reducing markedly the electrical resistivity of the resin reflecting the percolation threshold, to improving the storage modulus, and to increasing the thermal stability above $350^{\circ}C$. The effect on decreasing the resistivity and increasing the modulus was the greatest at the carbonized PAN nanofiber web content of 8 wt.%, particularly showing that the storage modulus was increased about 257~283% in the measuring temperature range of $-25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$. The result also exhibited that the carbonized PAN nanofibers were distributed uniformly and compactly in the unsaturated polyester, connecting the matrix three-dimensionally through the thickness direction of each specimen. It seemed that such the fiber distribution played a role in reducing the electrical resistivity as well as in improving the dynamic storage modulus.

  • The hybrid composites of aliphatic polyester-silica were prepared via a sol-gel reaction and their potential application using as a buffer coating layer in the thermoelectric device were investigated. When aliphatic polyesters were thermally treated at a high temperature of $240^{\circ}C$, the polymer showed an increases in thermal degradation temperature by $30{\sim}90^{\circ}C$ according to the thermal treatment time. The polyester-silica composites showed an increases in thermal degradation temperature by $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ according to the content of the added silica. Polyester-silica composite showed neither discoloration nor change in optical properties because Knoevenagel condensation reaction was hindered by silica structure. The thermal conductivity of the composites increased linearly according to the content of added silica.

  • Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), mechanical properties like modulus and phase transition temperature of polyester composites of banana fibers (treated and untreated) are measured simultaneously. The shifting of phase transition temperature is observed in some treatments. The performance of the composite depends to a large extent on the adhesion between polymer matrix and the reinforcement. This is often achieved by surface modification of the matrix or the filler. Banana fiber was modified chemically to achieve improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. Various silanes and alkalies were used to modify the fiber surface. Chemical modification was found to have a profound effect on the fiber/matrix interaction, which is evident from the values of phase transition temperatures. Of the various chemical treatments, simple alkali treatment with 1% NaOH was found to be the most effective.

  • The most upcoming technical issue of automotive coating is the compact coating process. Pre-primed coating is the outstanding technology eliminating electro-deposition and primer coating process. The main properties of pre-primed coating for automotive are flexibility, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Therefore, we synthesized the conventional polyester, elastomeric polyester and polyvinylidene fluoride resins and evaluated their properties to use as weldable pre-primed automotive coatings. As the results of flexibility and curing behavior, the elastomeric polyester coating was most appropriate to use for the pre-primed automotive coatings.

  • This paper is concerned with a fracture strength study of composite adhesive lap joints. The tensile and peel tests were carried out on specimen manufactured hybrid stacked composites such as the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of the work was to test the failure strength of adhesive bonded joints using hybrid stacked composites with a polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer adjacent to the fiber orientation. From results, the load directional orientation, small amount and low thickness of bamboo natural fiber layer have a good effect on the tensile and peel strength of natural fiber reinforced composites. and these characters are have a great influence on fracture strength and failure shape of adhesive bonded joints using hybrid stacked composites in the difference of fiber orientation.

  • This paper is concerned with the long-term performance of geo-textile (GT) composites in terms of creep deformation and frictional properties. Composites of PVA GT and HDPE GM were made to investigate the advanced properties of long-term performance related to waste landfill applications. The same experiments were also performed for typical polypropylene and polyester GT and compared to PVA GT/HDPE GM composites. We also develop high performance GT composites with GM by using PVA GT, which is capable of improving the frictional properties and thus enhances long-term performance of GT composites. Experimental study reveals that the friction coefficient of GT composites is relatively large compared with those of polyester and polypropylene non-woven GT as long as the friction media has similar size to the particles of domestic standard earth. In addition, the geo-composites bonded with geo-grid by a chemical process were investigated experimentally in terms of strain evaluation and creep response values. Geo-grid plays an important role as a reinforcing material. Three kinds of geo-grid were prepared as strong yarn polyester and they were woven type, non-woven type, and wrap knitted type. The sample geo-grids were then coated with PVC. The rib tensile strength tests were conducted to evaluate geo-grid products in terms of tensile strength with regard to single rib. The test was performed according to GRI-GGI. It was concluded again from the experiments that the tensile and creep strains of the geo-grid showed such stable values that the geo-grid prepared in this study could protect geo-textile partially in practical structures.

  • Natural fiber henequen/unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were fabricated by means of a compression molding technique using chopped henequen fibers treated at various electron beam (EB) dosages. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal expansion behavior were investigated through a single fiber microbonding test, fractographic observation, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermomechanical analysis, respectively. The results indicated that the interfacial and dynamic mechanical properties significantly depended on the level of the EB treatment irradiated onto the henequen fiber surfaces. The effect of EB treatment on the IFSS, storage modulus and fracture surface of the henequen/UPE composites agreed with each other. The results of this study also suggested that the modification of henequen fiber surfaces at 10 kGy EB is the most effective for improving the interfacial properties of the henequen/UPE composites.

  • This investigation developed a novel polyester composite based on the addition of zinc oxide (ZnO) of different sizes. We prepared nine samples Containing different percentages and sizes of ZnO as well as the control sample (Pol-ZnO0). The attenuation factors of Pol-micro ZnO were estimated using Phy-x software, while the HPGe detector and various gamma sources were used to experimentally measure the all-prepared composites. In terms of the two methods for micro composites, good agreement was observed. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of Pol-ZnO20, Pol-ZnO40, and Pol-ZnO60, two more samples one with ZnO nanoparticles instead of microparticles, and the other with half microparticles and half nanoparticles (referenced as 0.5 M + 0.5 N) were determined. For all the Polyester composites and energies, the mixture of microparticles and nanoparticles had greater LAC values than each of the particles on their own. For example, the LAC values for the Pol-ZnO20 polymer at 1.330 MeV are 0.0836, 0.0888, and 0.0903 cm-1 for the microparticles, nanoparticles, and mixture, respectively. The values of the prepared polymer samples' radiation protection efficiency (RPE) against energy with a thickness of 2 cm was determined experimentally. The Pol-ZnO60 0.5 M + 0.5 N sample has the highest RPE out of all the samples, followed by its nanoparticle counterpart, and then its microparticle counterpart. On the other hand, the Pol-ZnO0 sample, the polymer with no ZnO content, at all energies has the lowest RPE, followed by the three Pol-ZnO20 samples.
