  • In this research, we applied FT-IR spectroscopy to study the hydrolysis of the ester-crosslinking formed by various polycarboxylic acids on the cotton fabric. We observed the following; (1) the ester-crosslinking is less durable to hydrolysis than ether-crosslinking under all conditions; (2) the ester-crosslinking formed by polycarboxylic acids having more than three carboxyl groups, such as butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA), are substantially more durable to hydrolysis than the acids having two or three carboxyl groups, such as maleic and citric acid; (3) alkaline conditions drastically accelerate the hydrolysis of both urea- and ester-crosslinking; and (4) the ester-crosslinking formed by poly(maleic acid) is more resistant to hydrolysis at alkaline conditions than BTCA. (5) polycarboxylic acid molecules were removed from the fabric at same rate as the hydrolysis of the ester linkage. FT-IR spectroscopy has proved to be a useful analytical technique for evaluating the hydrolysis of the crosslinked cotton fabric.

  • The main colorant of Chelidonium majus extracts is a berberine which shows relatively good dyeability onto silk fabrics in the appropriate dyeing conditions without mordant, But cotton fabrics are difficult to dye with berberine because of the low substantivity the cationic to cellulosic fibers. we treated cotton fabrics using three types of polycarboxylic acid, DL-malic acid, citric acid, 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) to increase dyeability of Chelidonium majus extracts onto cotton fabrics. As a result the cotton fabrics treated with polycarboxylic acid could be dyed with Chelidonium majus extracts and also showed yellow vividly. The dye uptake were increased with increasing the number of carboxy groups. And so dye uptake resulted the largest in the BTCA solutions which have four carboxylic groups in the molecular unit. The optimal dyeing temperature a of Chelidonium majus extracts onto polycarboxylic acid treated cotton fabrics were $60^{\circ}C$. The dye equilibrium was reached 20 minutes after dyeing. Neutral pH of dye solutions showed in higher K/S value than acidic or alkaline conditions. But the colorfastness to washing and light according to polycarboxylic acid treat was not enhance.

  • This treatment was applied to bleached softwood kraft pulp handsheets in an effort to improve physical strength of paper. Paper strength was improved by esterification of cellulose and polycarboxylic acid. Because hydrogen bond of carboxyl group is stronger than that of hydroxyl group, polycarboxylic acid forms stronger hydrogen bond than cellulose does. 1,2,3,4,-cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid (CPTA) and sodium dihydrogen phosphate ($NaH_2O_4$) were used as polycarboxylic acid and catalyst, respectively This reaction was confirmed by the weight gain of the handsheets, by FTIR spectrum and by changes in mechanical properties of sheets. Wet tensile strength was improved when handsheets were treated with polycarboxylic acid. However, tear strength and burst strength decreased.

  • In this research, we investigated hydrolysis of the ester crosslinking on cotton fabric treated with polymer of maleic acid(PMA), citric acid(CA) and combination of polymer of maleic acid and citric acid using Fourier transform infrared spectroscophy. The rate of hydrolysis of the ester crosslinkage increased with pH regardless of the type of polycarboxylic acid used and even after hydrolysis for 256 hour in pH 13_4 solution, the treated fabric retained $10-20\%$ ester crosslinkage. The durability to alkaline hydrolysis of the ester crosslinkage formed by CA was lower than that of by PMA and combination of poly(maleic acid) and citric acid indicating that the ester formed by CA on the cotton fabric is more susceptible to hydrolysis than that formed by PMA and combination of PMA and CA. The total amount of ester and polycarboxylic acid molecules removed from fabric increased with increasing hydrolysis time but the rate of hydrolysis of ester linkage were higher than that of removal of polycarboxylic acid molecule from the fabric. The characteristic of hydrolysis of fabric treated with combination of PMA and CA was related with the mixing ratio of PMA and CA in treating fabric.

  • PVA films were crosslinked with dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU) and three polycarboxylic acids of butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA), citric acid and malic acid Different factors influencing the crosslinking treatment with BTCA were investigated including BTCA and sodium hypophosphite (SHP) concentration, curing temperature and time. The cured films was extracted with boiling water and gel fraction was calculated based on weight change of the PVA films. The gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing curing temperature and time. And the resistance to water and thermal stability of the crosslinked PVA films improved with the BTCA crosslinking treatment. While crosslinking with citric acid gave the highest gel fraction among the crosslinkers, crosslinking with malic acid showed the highest absorbancy in 0.9% saline solution, which was attributed to lower crosslink density and high number-average molecular weight between crosslinks. The superabsorbent PVA films could be prepared by adjusting the crosslinking condition of PVA with polycarboxilic acids.

  • The aim of this work was to inhibit the heat-and moisture-induced yellowing of ECF/TCF bleached hard wood kraft pulp (HBKP) retaining hexenuronic acid (HexA). We have already reported that one of the derivatives of HexA, 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFA), causes yellowing of HBKP in acidic paper, and that FFA might polymerize or react with pulp components to form new chromophoric groups (1). In this study, it was shown that the carboxylic base of FFA interacts with that of glucuronic acid or galacturonic acid, resulting in strong yellowing. Therefore, it seems that preventing the reaction of carboxylic bases could be effective in suppressing this yellowing. We have discovered that polycarboxylic acids (for example, citric acid, tartaric acid, etc.) are useful as a yellowing inhibitor.

  • Measurements of sedimentation, solid loading, zeta potential, and viscosity were employed to determine a proper dispersant and its amount for a well dispersed alumina powders in aqueous alumina tape casting using acrylate as a binder. Polycarboxylic acid was the most effective one among various dispersants considered in the present study and its amount was 0.23∼0.24 g per 100 g alumina for a dispersion. Better dispersion was obtained as an increase of dispersant addition. However, the dispersion was hindered as the amount of dispersant was higher than the optimum amount because of bridging or tangling of polymer chains. Excellent aqueous alumina tapes were prepared from the slurry containing the optimum amount of the polycarboxylic acid (0.2g), alumina powders(100 g), acrylate and Benzoflex as binder and plasticizer, respectively. The viscosity of the slurry was 570 cps and the alumina loading in the tape was 57 vol%.

  • The polycarboxylic (PC) type concrete superplasticizer was synthesized. The effects of ethylene oxide group number and its molecular weight on the properties of the polycarboxylic type concrete superplasticizer and the concrete motar properties were studied. To investigated of the interfacial properties of the premixed-concrete with the superplasticizer, the type and the amount of polyethylene glycol, meta acrylate added, and type of the initialization agent were studied. Also the interfacial properties of the superplasticizer aqueous phase, the wettability on the cement particle, the fluidity of the cement mortar, and the strength properties of the concrete were measured. For a high fluidity of the cement mortar and a high strength of concrete, a low value of the surface tension and contact angle were required for PC. To have a good performance for PC, the reaction condition of 1.3 mol ratio of MA against to MPEG was suitable with KSP initiator.

  • Naphthalene sulfonated condensate has been widely used as a superplasticizer for cement and concrete, but the application was limited due to its large slump loss with elapsed time. To complement this demerit of NSF, polycarboxylic acid copolymer from nlaleic anhydride and acryl~c acid(MA) was synthesized to retain the mobility of cement and concrete, and then mixed with NSF. The physical properties, such as fluidity, fluidityretention and rheology, were measured by applying these admixtures to cement paste as a function of elapsed time. And also compressive strength of mortar was measured with curing time. NIv-l and NM-2 containing 10, 20 wt% of MA respectively had a excellent fluidity and a fluidity- retention. In rheological property, the increases of shear stress and viscosity with elapsed time were delayed with the increasing of shear rate in cornparision with NSF only. The marked slump loss of cement paste could be controlled by these admixture. Also the added ainount of admixture and the ratio of water to cement affected these properties.
