  • Biomimetic actuators composed of cellophane with an electrically conducting polyaniline(PANI) film have been fabricated and tested in air ambience conditions doped with two different counter ions such as perchlorate (${ClO_4}^-$) and tetrafluoroborate (${BF_4}^-$). Fabrication of the trilayer CP//CELLOPHANE//CP substantially enhanced the tip displacement (13.2mm) compared to the small displacement (8.3mm) of the bilaye. CP//CELLOPHANE. The ion migration among layers is the main factor behind the expansion of cellophane, while the expansion/contraction of PANI are dependent on the redox reaction of the polymer. The displacement of the composite is dominated by the humidity content. This implies that the actuation principle is possibly due to the assistance of water existing.

  • We studied the effect of structural and morphological changes on the conductivity of a stretched conducting polymer film. To improve the poor processability of polyaniline, we used dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as both a surfactant and a dopant during emulsion polymerization, followed by blending with high-impact polystyrene. UV-Vis/NIR spectra were obtained to observe conformational changes, and SEM and AFM were used to investigate morphological changes. FT-IR dichroism was applied to determine the microscopic orientation, and XRD patterns were obtained for quantitative crystallinity analysis. The electrical conductivity (${\sigma}_{\parallel}/{\sigma}_{\perp}$) was measured as a function of draw ratio. We found a clear correlation between morphological changes and (${\sigma}_{\parallel}/{\sigma}_{\perp}$), especially at the stretching limit. The conductivity of the films can be modified according to the desired application by controlling their structure and morphology.

  • Structural morphology, annealing behavior and dielectric properties of polyaniline-emeraldine base (Pani-EB) and poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films prepared by spin coating technique have been studied. MIM and MISM structures were used to investigate annealing and dielectric behavior. The XRD and AFM spectrum of as grown and annealed thin films indicates the amorphous nature. The observed amorphous phase, low loss, dielectric behavior and thermal stability even at high temperatures implies the feasibility of utilizing PMMA and Pani-EB thin films as gate dielectric insulator layer in organic thin film transistors which can find application in flat panel display.

  • Thin film capacitors with Al-Polymer-Al sandwich structure were fabricated. The bottom and top aluminium (Al) electrodes were deposited by vacuum evaporation and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), polyaniline-emeraldine base (Pani-EB) and cobalt phthalocyanine/polyaniline - emeraldine base (CoPc /Pani-EB) blend films (which can be used as buffer hole injection layer in OLEDs) were deposited by spin coating technique. X-ray diffractograms indicated amorphous nature of the polymer films whose thicknesses were measured by capacitance and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) methods. AC conduction studies revealed that the conduction mechanism responsible in these films is variable range hopping of polarons. From D.C conduction studies, it is observed that, the nature of conduction is ohmic in the lower fields and at higher fields the dominating D.C conduction is of Poole-Frenkel type.

  • Enzyme polymerization is a benign process exploiting the unique activity of enzymes. In this study, a peroxidase-mimetic catalyst is demonstrated as an alternative to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for the polymerization of aniline. The mimetic catalyst successfully catalyzes the polymerization of aniline monomers to produce polyaniline (PANI) in an aqueous solution. The PANI produced is rich of para-structure that is generally observed when HRP is used as a catalyst. Compared to HRP, the peroxidase-mimetic catalyst shows a considerably higher catalytic activity at neutral and weak basic conditions (pH >6.5) and at temperatures over $45^{\circ}C$, at which HRP is denatured.

  • Thin films of polyaniline (PANI) salts were in situ deposited on a Pt plate during either chemical polymerization or electrochemical polymerization. The oxidation states of the salt films were controlled by the applied DC potential. AC impedance of the Pt/PANI electrode were measured in monomer-free 1 N HCl solution in order to investigate the electrodic properties of the films at the following applied DC potentials: 0, 0.45 and 0.75 V vs. SCE. Very small differences in film conductivity according to its oxidation state were observed by analysis of the impedance spectra, the reasons of which are complicated by enriched water content in the film and possible decrease in the film thickness during the measurements. The electrochemical activity of the film/solution interface varied with its oxidation state. Stability of the film in 1 N HCl solution was also evaluated by impedance and cyclic voltammetry measurements.

  • The polyaniline (PANI) electrodes are prepared by chemical synthesis and electrodeposition methods and their supercapacitive properties are characterized and compared by morphology observation, cyclic voltammetry as a function of scan rate, and impedance spectra analysis. In particular, the supercapacitive properties obtained in the range of higher potential scan rates (e.g., over $200mV\;s^{-1}$) are emphasized to be capable of utilizing adequately the high power capability of supercapacitor. As a result, the PANI electrode by the electrodeposition shows superior specific capacitance (max. $474F\;g^{-1}$ at $10mV\;s^{-1}$ and about $390F\;g^{-1}$ at $500mV\;s^{-1}$) than those by the chemical synthesis method. This is mainly due to highly porous structure obtained by the electrodeposition to yield higher specific surface area.

  • Conducting polymers (CPs) are widely used as matrixes for the entrapment of enzymes in analytical chemistry and biosensing devices. However, enzyme-catalyzed polymerization of CPs is rarely used for immunosensing due to the difficulties involved in the quantitative analysis of colloidal CPs in solution phase. In this study, an enzyme-amplified electrocatalytic immunosensor employing a CP as a redox marker has been developed. A polyanionic polymer matrix, $\alpha$-amino-$\omega$-thiol terminated poly(acrylic acid), was employed for precipitation of CP. The acrylic acid group acts as a polyanionic template. The thiol terminus of the polymer was used to produce self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au electrodes and the amine terminus was employed for immobilization of biomolecules. In an enzymeamplified sandwich type immunosensor, the polyaniline (PANI) produced enzymatically is attracted by the electrostatic force of the matrix polymer. The precipitated PANI was characterized by electrochemical methods.
