Bacterial population, signal compounds of pollution, bacterial productivity, heterotrophic activity and the activities of extracellular enzymes were analyzed four times from July 1994 to April 1995 at Daejin, Galnam, Pohang, and Ulsan in the coastal area of Bast Sea in order to investigate the state of eutrophication. The population of heavy metal resistant bacteria in Pohang was the highest among all stations. The bacterial populations which could utilize C -P compounds (phosphonate) showed the highest at Pohang that was expected for the industrial and agricultural effluents to inpour. It could be useful as an index of expectation about the influx of industrial sewages and agricultural effluents. The activities of extracellular enzymes for the degradation of organic matter were the highest in the Ulsan Chuyongam, but low in Daejin. These results showed positive relationship with the population of heterotrophic bacteria and bacterial productivity The ratio of poly-P and DNA in Pohang was the highest, and that in Ulsan, Galnam, and Daejin consecutively, corresponding with the distribution of heterotrophic bacteria. In case of the heterotrophic activities, each of the stations gives difference of seasonal variation in heterotrophic activities. Bacterial productivity seemed to be dependent on seasons; the highest in summer and the lowest in fall and winter. These seasonal variations of bacterial productivity seems to be similar with those of heterotrophic bacteria. It is suggested that the state of eutrophication could be evaluated by the criteria of the population sizes and the productivities of microorganisms, the amount of poly-P, heterotrophic activity, the activities of extracellular enzymes, etc.

Poly(amic acid) was synthesized from the reaction of p-PDA/ODA and PMDA/BPDA and silane oligomer containing epoxy group was also synthesized from the reaction of tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) and glycidol. After hybridizing poly (amic acid) and silane oligomer, they were effectively converted into polyimide/silica hybrid films by thermal imidization process. As the silica contents in hybrid films increased, CTE values decreased from 17 ppm/K to 10 ppm/K and the tensile modulus increased, in spite of decreasing tensile strength. In addition, the peel test showed that the adhesion strength of hybrid film was enhanced from $0.43kg_f/cm$ to $1.02kg_f/cm$. Therefore, it could be concluded that the polyimide/silica hybrid film is effective to enhance adhesion strength for FCCL films.
1,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU, Carmustine)-loaded poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, lactide/glycolide mole ratio 75 : 25) microparticles were prepared and fabricated into wafers in an attempt to study the possibility for the treatment of malignant glioma by direct inserting the wafers to the tumor or the cavity remained after surgical resection of the tumor. SEM observation of the microparticles prepared by spray drying method revealed that the microparticles were spherical, i. e. microspheres. Significant reduction of the crystallinity of BCNU encapsulated in PLGA was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses of the BCNU-loaded PLGA microparticles. Release pattern of BCNU was dependent on several preparation parameters, such as the molecular weight and concentration of PLGA, and initial BCNU loading amount, etc. In vitro release of BCNU was prolonged over 8 weeks with close to zero-order release pattern after initial burst effect. Observations of morphological change of wafers and pH change of release media during release test period confirmed that hydration and degradation of PLGA would be facilitated with an increase of BCNU-loading amount.

In this study, prepolymer was synthesized through the reaction of isoporon diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylolbutanoic acid (DMBA) based on poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG) for the synthesis of water-soluble polyurethane to be used as a leather surface coating applied with ethyl acetate and piperazine. Thereafter, the piperazine was chain-extended with 0.01 M, 0.03 M, 0.05 M, and 0.07 M in the water-dispersed resin, and the tensile strength, elongation, CV (cyclic voltammetry), and solvent resistance analysis were performed. Tensile strength of the prepared sample was measured at 5.422 kgf/㎟ when the piperazine content was 0.07M, and elongation was measured as 587% when the piperazine was 0.01M. Solvent resistance analysis showed the same solvent resistance regardless of piperazine content, and the redox potential was changed according to piperazine content through CV measurement.

This study was conducted to investigate the soil mulching effect on growth and yield of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. The number of stem, stem diameter, and fresh weight of aerial part in black poly-ethylene film and transparent poly-ethylene film mulched condition were higher than those of non-mulching and rice-straw mulching. Number of flowers were high in the order of non-mulching, rice-straw, trans-P. E. film, and black P. E. film. Yield of underground part was higher in mulching condition than that of non-mulching. Dry rhizome yield in black P. E. film mulching was significantly high to compare with the other treatments. There was lower disease incidence of Phytophthora blight in trans-P. E and black P. E. film compare with the other treatments but any difference was not observed in essential oil content of rhizome. Significant positive correlation was found between rhizome weight and fresh weight of aerial part. It was also shown that the fresh weight of aerial part was greatly dependent on the number of stems and stem diameter.
Surface renewable nano-$RuO_2$/poly(methyl methacrylate) polymeric composite pH electrodes were prepared. The composite electrode with 53 wt% of nano-$RuO_2$ showed similar good response characteristics to nano-$IrO_2$ composite electrode reported earlier. It showed response slope of -58.7 mV/pH, response time of <1 s, surface renewability of $-57.0{\pm}0.3mV/pH$ (n=5) and long time stability for a month as well as low interferences but high interferences by electrochemically active species like $I^-$ and $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$. However, the response slope and time became worse at higher pH than 9 compared to those of nano-$IrO_2$ composite electrodes possibly due to the difference of physical properties resulting from higher content of nano-$RuO_2$ in polymeric composite matrix.
To produce PHA(polyhydroxyalkanoic acid) from microbr, dozens of microorganism have been screened from sewage sludge. Selected a strain HJ out of 50 strains of PHA producing bacteria has a capability of accumulating large amounts of PHB/HV copolymer when grown in batch culture with a single carbon source (glucose) that was not generally considered as precursor of hydroxyvalerate monomer unit. The strain HJ was identified as the genus Pseudomonas with respect to morphological, cultural, and biochemical characteristics. The optimal temperature and pH for cell growth were $37^{\circ}C$ and 7.0. The optimal medium compositions for cell growth were glucose 1% as a carbon source, (NH4) 2SO4 0.2% as a nitrogen source, K2HPO4 0.3%, and KH2PO4 0.45%. TO investigate she optimal condition for PHA production two-step cultivation method was employed. PHA production was inducted by deficiency of NH4+, SO4-2, Mg+2. Besides carbon source, deficiency of all nutrients stimulated PHA productivity but deficiency of NH4+ stimulated the most HV monomer content. The highest PHA production was C/N molar ratio 95.2. Pseudomonas sp. HJ was also able to pyoduc PHB/HV copolymer when cultivated on alkane, alkanoate, alcohol as carbon sources. The contents of PHA and she proportions of hydroxyvalerate monomer units varied depending on the carbon sources. Especially Pseudomonas sp. HJ was able to incorporate hydroxyvalerate into PHB/HV to level as high as from 49 to 74 mol% when grown in a medium containing hexadecane and propionate. The purified PHA was identified PHB/HV copolymer by HNMR analysis.
Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized at 30, 40, and 5$0^{\circ}C$ using 2,2'-azobis (2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) as the initiator and the solvent, respectively. High molecular weight (HMW) atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was prepared by saponifying the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) synthesized. The effect of polymerization conditions were investigated in terms of conversion, degree of branching for acetyl group of PVAc, and molecular weight of both PVAc and PVA. The polymerization rate of VAc in TBA was proportional to the 0.49th power of ADMVN concentration in good accordance with the theoretical value of 0.5. HMW-PVA with high yield could be obtained successfully, probably due to lower polymerization temperature and decreased chain transfer reaction rate which was achieved by adopting ADMVN and TBA. PYAc having average degree of polymerization (P$_{n}$) of 10000~13000 was obtained at the conversion of 35~70%. Saponification of so prepared PVAc yielded PVA having P$_{n}$ of 2400~6100. The syndiotactic diad content increased with decreasing polymerization temperature and increasing VAc concentration due to a steric hindrance effect of TBA during polymerization.
For the systematic investigation of biochemical characteristics of Korean ginseng protein, protein fractions were analyzed by the techniques of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The effect of pH and various salts on extractibility of ginseng protein were determined while the amino acid composition was studied by amino acid autoanalyzer. The protein was consisted of 66.08% of albumin and 20.51% of glutelin. Extractability of ginseng protein was the lowest in pH 3.0 and the highest in $pH\;6.0{\sim}8.0$. Among the neutral salts solution, $0.4M\;Na_2CO_3$ showed maximum extractability while $1.0M\;MgSO_4$ solution showed the least extractability. Resonable precipitation was obtained by 40% of acetone and ammonium sulfate. It has been shown by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis that the soluble protein had 11 bands. The molecular weight for the main protein of the soluble protein wasestimated to be 43,000. In amino acid composition of water extracted protein, arginine content was the highest 47.17% while on the contray, proline and cystine contents were very low.
The hydrogels of hydrophilic three-dimensional methacrylate polymer networks were prepared from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDGMA) in aqueous solution. The interaction of water with the hydrophilic methacrylate polymers in the hydrogels was studied by pulse NMR spectroscopy. The spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of low water content hydrogels showed the different double environments, resulting in two spin-lattice relaxation times (T1a and T1b). The values of T1a and T1b were 16.4${\times}$10-3 sec and 58.2${\times}$10-3 sec for a p(HEMA)-(10% H2O) system, and 13.2${\times}$10-3 sec and 23.1${\times}$10-3 sec for a crosslinked EGDMA-p(HEMA)-(10% H2O) system, respectively. The spin-spin relaxation times (T2) of the hydrogels were also measured as a function of water content in the p(HEMA)-(H2O)n and crosslinked EGDMA-p(HEMA)-(H2O)n system. The values of T2 were approximately 10 times less than those of T1 in agreement with the principles of spin relaxations.
