Zn2+ PVC-based Membrane Sensor Based on 3-[(2-Furylmethylene)amino]-2-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one

  • The 3-[(2-furylmethylene)amino]-2-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one (FTT) was used as an excellent ionophore in construction of a $Zn^{2+}$ PVC-based membrane sensor. The best performance was obtained with a membrane composition of 30% poly(vinyl chloride), 62% nitrobenzen (NB), 3% FTT and 5% sodium tetraphenyl borate (TBP). This membrane sensor shows very good selectivity and sensitivity towards $Zn^{2+}$ over a wide variety of cations, including alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. The membrane sensor revealed a great enhancement in selectivity coefficients for $Zn^{2+}$ ions, in comparison to the previously reported $Zn^{2+}$ membrane sensors. Theoretical studies also showed the selective interaction of TFF and $Zn^{2+}$ ions. The proposed membrane sensor exhibits a Nernstian behavior (with slope of 29.3 ${\pm}$ 0.3 mV per decade) over a wide concentration range (1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$-1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$) with a detection limit of 8.5 ${\times}$ $10^{-7}$ M (52 ng mL$^{-1}$). It shows relatively fast response time, in the whole concentration range ($\lt$ 20 s), and can be used for at least 10 weeks in a pH range of 3.0-7.0. The proposed membrane sensor was successfully used in direct determination of $Zn^{2+}$ ions in wastewater of industrial zinc electroplating companies, and also as an indicator electrode in titration with EDTA.

Structural response of composite concrete filled plastic tubes in compression

  • Kenya has recently experienced worrying collapse of buildings during construction largely attributable to the poor quality of in-situ concrete and poor workmanship. The situation in the country is further compounded by rapid deterioration of infrastructure, hence necessitating the development of alternative structural systems such as concrete filled unplasticized poly vinyl chloride (UPVC) tubes as columns. The work herein adds on to the very limited and scanty work on use of UPVC tubes in construction. This study presents the findings of experimental and analytical work which investigated the structural response of composite concrete filled UPVC tubes under compressive load regime. UPVC pipes are cheaper than steel tubes and can be used as formwork during construction and thereafter as an integral part of column. Key variables in this study included the strength of infill concrete, the length to diameter ratio (L/D) of the plastic tube, as well as the diameter to thickness ratio (D/2t) of the plastic tube. Plastic tubes having varying diameters and heights were used to confine concrete of different strengths. Results obtained in the study clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of UPVC tubes as a confining medium for infill concrete, attributable to enhanced composite interaction between the UPVC tube and infill concrete medium. It was determined that compressive strength of the composite column specimens increased with increased concrete strength while the same decreased with increased column height, albeit by a small margin since all the columns considered were short columns. Most importantly, the experimental confined concrete strength increased significantly when compared to unconfined concrete strength; the strength increased between 1.18 to 3.65 times the unconfined strength. It was noted that lower strength infill concrete had the highest confined strength possibly due to enhanced composite interaction with the confining UPVC tube. The study further proposes an analytical model for the determination of confined strength of concrete.

Peak mooring forces in the horizontal interlaced multi-layered moored floating pipe breakwater

  • Present study aims to investigate the influence of relative breakwater width W/L (W=width of breakwater, L=wavelength), wave steepness $H_i/gT^2$ (Hi=incident wave height, T=wave period) and relative wave height d/W (d=water depth) on forces in the moorings of horizontal interlaced multi-layered moored floating pipe breakwater (HIMMFPB) model. Studies were conducted on scaled down physical models having three layers of Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes, wave steepness $H_i/gT^2$ varying from 0.063 to 0.849, relative width W/L varying from 0.4 to 2.65 and relative spacing S/D=2 (S=horizontal centre-to-centre spacing of pipes, D=diameter of pipes). Peak mooring forces were also measured and data collected is analyzed by plotting non-dimensional graphs depicting variation of $f_s/{\gamma}W^2$ ($f_s$=Sea side Mooring force, ${\gamma}$=specific weight of water) & $f_l/{\gamma}W^2$ ($f_l$=Lee side Mooring force) with $H_i/gT^2$ for d/W varying from 0.082 to 0.276 and also variation of $f_s/{\gamma}W^2$ and $f_l/{\gamma}W^2$ with W/L for $H_i$/d varying from 0.06 to 0.400.

  • Ion-selective poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes for the determination of the anticholinergic drug alverine in pure substances is described. Ion-pair complex of alverine with anionic counter ion acid red 97 is investigated as electroactive compound for the electrode membrane. On the optimal composition of membrane, its slope was 55.35mV/decade, relative standard deviation was 0.61 and lower limit of linear range was $1.0{\times}10^{-5}M$. The observed potentiometric selectivity coefficient was -2.625 toward methylephedrine and -2.216 toward histidine. We can got the stable potential at pH 7.0~4.0. Response time was 20~30 seconds for solutions${\leq}10^{-4}M$, about 10 seconds for solutions ${\geq}10^{-4}M$ of these compounds.

Formaldehyde Emission of Wood-Based Composite Panels with Different Surface Lamination Materials Using Desiccator Method

  • Wood-based composite panels such as plywood, particleboard (PB), or medium density fiberboard (MDF) are mostly used in the lamination on their surface for the manufacturing of furniture, or interior building products, the concern on the formaldehyde emission (FE) from the surface laminated wood panels is increasingly attracting attentions from the public. Thus, this study was conducted to understand influence of surface laminating materials to the FE from PB and MDF with or without edge sealing, using 24-hour desiccator method. Both PB samples that had been laminated on their surface with low-pressure laminate (LPL) or polypropylene (PP) film and MDF that had been treated with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) or coating were tested for the FE with or without edge sealing. As expected, the FE of PB with the sealed edges decreased to 37.4% and 80.7% with the LPL and PP lamination, respectively. The surface laminated MDF with the sealed edges also showed a decrease in the emission up to 57.8% and 54.3%, with the PVC lamination and coating, respectively. However, the coated MDF samples showed 5.3% increase in the emission when their edges were not sealed, indicating a FE form the solvent used for coating. These results showed that the type of surface lamination materials on wood-based composite panels has a great impact on their resultant FE, indicating that the influence of surface laminating materials should be taken into consideration for the formaldehyde mission measurement.

Study on Physical Properties of PVC Involving Norbornene Dialkyl Ester (Norbornene Dialkyl Ester가 첨가된 PVC의 물성 연구)

  • In this study, we observed changes in the physical properties of norbornene dialkyl ester applied to a PVC. The PVC specimens were prepared by blending PVC, norbornene dialkyl ester and stabilizers. Then, the hardness, tensile strength, elongation, tearing strength, transmittancy, haze and yellowness index of these specimens were measured, and were compared with DOP. The hardness of compounds except dicyclohexyl-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylate (DCHN) were an equal to or higher than that of DOP. The tearing strength and tensile characteristic of DCHN could not be analyzed due to its high hardness. Tensile properties such as the tensile strength and elongation were improved for six compounds except diisononyl-5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylate (DINN). All compounds measured showed better tearing strength and transmittancy than those of DOP. Also all norbornene derivatives except DDN showed good haze indices. The yellowness index of DON and DPN showed similar values as DOP.

  • Thousands of new chemicals have been introduced to environment during last decades. Many of them and common consumer products have been shown to be the endocrine disrupting chemicals. One such chemical group is the phthalates, used in soft poly vinyl chloride (PVC) material and in a huge number of consumer products. The prevalence of these modem chemicals have a remarkable increase. Approximately 3.5 million tons of the main phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are produced annually worldwide and indeed, DEHP is considered a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. It has been demonstrated that high doses of phthalate can adversely affect adult and developing animals. In this review, we critically discuss the conclusions of recently original research papers and provide an overview of studies on reproductive disrupting effects of phthalates. In addition, we review the reproductive toxicity data of phthalates in some in vitro research and in both male and female reproductive systems in experimental and domestic animals. Finally, we point out some critical issues that should be addressed in order to clarify the implication of phthalates for human reproduction.

Organopalladium(II) Complexes as Ionophores for Thiocyanate Ion-Selective Electrodes

  • A thiocyanate poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode based on [1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]dihalopalladium( II), [(dppe)$PdX_2$, X = Cl ($L^1$), X = I ($L^2$)] as active sensor has been developed. The diiodopalladium complex, [(dppe)$PdI_2](L^2$) displays an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence: $SCN^-\;>\;I^-\;>\;{ClO_4}^-\;>\;Sal^-\;>\;Br^-\;>\;{NO_2}^-\;>\;{HPO_4}^-\;>\;AcO^-\;>\;{NO_3}^-\;>\;{H_2PO_4}^-\;>\;{CO_3}^{2-}$. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian response (-59.8 mV/decade) over a wide linear concentration range of thiocyanate ($(1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-1}\;to\;5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ M), low detection limit ($(1.1\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ M), fast response $(t_{90%}$ = 24 s), and applicability over a wide pH range (3.5∼11). Addition of anionic sites, potassium tetrakis[p-chlorophenyl] borate (KTpClPB) is shown to improve potentiometric anion selectivity, suggesting that the palladium complex may operate as a partially charged carrier-type ionophore within the polymer membrane phase. The reaction mechanism is discussed with respect to UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy. Application of the electrode to the potentiometric titration of thiocyanate ion with silver nitrate is reported.

High Frequency Scattering from Cylindrical Scatterer (원통형 산란체의 고주파 산란 특성)

  • This paper presents the changes of acoustic scattering pattern from a single cylinder and two identical cylinders in both theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. Bi-static scattering pattern by single cylinder and two parallel cylinders (length 2m, radius 30mm) was measured in $5m\times5m\times5m$ water tank using high frequency projector (120 kHz) and hydrophone. The results show similar agreement between experiment and theory. In case of single cylinder scattering. omni-directional pattern was observed in backward but there are fluctuations or target strength in forward. Interference between each cylinder's scattering fields produce fluctuations of target strength in all directions of two cylinders.

  • The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of polyamide-modified poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC)-sol was investigated. PVC-sol was plasticized with dioctyl phthalate (DOP). In this work, the effects of the addition of polyamide on the properties of PVC-sol seal-ants were investigated. Two kinds of polyamide resins having different amine value were used. It was found that the properties of the PVC-sol sealants were significantly affected by the contents and types of the added polyamide rosins. The PVC-sol sealants modified with polyamide A (low amino value) showed higher tensile properties than those modified with polyamide B(high amino value) did, and thermal stability of the sealants showed nearly the same trends. The tensile strength of sealants were decreased with increasing the $CaCO_3$ contents. The dielectric constant were not strongly dependent on the polyamide types and contents.
