The aim of this study was to analyze nutritional compositions of rapeseed pollen granules and to determine the possible usage of pollen granules as a yeast culture medium. Rapeseed pollen granules (per 100 g) were consisted of carbohydrate 58.9 g, protein 20.8 g, fat 4.1 g, ash 2.5 g and water 13.7 g. And fructose (13.7 g), glucose (11.1 g), and sucrose (6.6 g) of sugars and K (606.7 mg) and P (603.3 mg) of minerals were highly contained. In addition, free amino acids such as glutamic acid (2,482.4 mg), aspartic acid (2,136.5 mg), lysine (1,648.3 mg), and leucine (1,631.1 mg) were present at a higher level. When liquid medium, which was made from cracked pollen granules (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 g/L), was tested for yeast culture, liquid medium containing pollen granules over 15 g/L showed higher yeast growth than YPD medium (control). Liquid medium containing both cracked pollen granules (15 g/L) and NaCl (1 ~ 20 g/L) improved yeast growth than the liquid medium without NaCl. In addition, when yeast growth was tested on solid medium made from pollen granules (15 g/L) at $30^{\circ}C$ for 2 days, yeast colonies were equally well-formed like those grown on YPD medium. Overall, rapeseed pollen granules have potential properties on yeast growth and could be used as a primary source for yeast culture.
Thirty-nine out of eighty-five barley varieties/strains survived until heading stage in the saline experimental field $(0.03-0.05\%\;salt)$ and they were used for pollen study. Light and scanning electron microscopic observations revealed two distinctive types of barley pollens: one transparent and small in size and the other dark and larger. In addition, both types of pollens were stained with Alexander's stain and it was found that the smaller and transparent pollen was cytoplasm-devoid (CD) while the larger pollen was cytoplasm-rich (CR). Sixteen out of 39 barley varieties/lines grown in the saline soil had CR pollens, which were rarely observed in the barley plants grown in the non-saline soil. Moreover, it was observed that salt stress severely reduced seed setting in the varieties having degenerated pollens. These results suggest that salt stress affects the fertility of barley pollen. The sterile pollen was undersized and lack of cytoplasm probably due to abortion. Furthermore, a varietal difference existed in the response of pollen development to salt stress.

Current rose cultivars are all composed of heterozygous genome due to long history of out crossing including interspecific hybridization. It has been adapted by artificial selection and crossing by breeders that mainly based on the crossing with fertile pollen derived from inter- or intra-specific hybridization. Pollen viability and germination ability tests provide valuable information for the designing of parentage for more successful breeding efficacy. In this study, we tested the pollen viability and germination ability in seven rose cultivars to find any relationship among several factors including pollen size, ploidy levels, and crossing compatibility. The pollen viability showed wide ranges from 39% 'Pinocchio' as minimum to 82% 'Scarlet Mimi' as maximum, whereas pollen germination rate were from 1% 'Mini Rosa' to 41% 'Scarlet Mimi' as a highest. Pollen size ranged from 41.3 to $45.4{\mu}m$ in large sized pollen and 30.7 to $37.4{\mu}m$ in small sized pollen. The mean diameter of large sized pollen is approximately 10-40% bigger than that of small sized pollen. There are positive relationships among ploidy level, total chromosome length, and pollen size. Crossing list showed that seed setting ratio and seed germination were related to pollen viability, pollen germination, and ploidy level.
Conditions for lily pollen growth in vitro and transformation were optimized. Active pollen tube development was achieved effectively in a medium containing 7% sucrose with pH adjusted to 5.7 at the temperature of 27$^{\circ}C$ for about 16-24 hours. Pollen growth was little impaired by the presence of kanamycin at concentration up to 100 mg/L. Pollen rains near the beginning of germination stage were more reliable for Agrobacterium-mediated GUS DNA transformation via vacuum infiltration lasted for 20-40 minutes. GUS DNA integration and its expression in fully developed pollen tubes could be confirmed by Southern blot hybridization, RT-PCR and histochemical staining.

Plant reproduction associated with crop yields is highly vulnerable to global climate change components such as high and cold temperatures. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of season-high exposure to temperature treatments in pollen morphology on Adzuki bean (V. angularis) and Mung bean (V. radiate). V. angularis and V. radiata were treated at high temperatures in the high temperature gradient greenhouse designed to cause temperature deviation. The pollen shapes treated at high temperature were compared by an electron scanning microscope. As a result, it was confirmed that the number of abnormal pollens morphology at high temperature was the least in V. radiata, and V. angularis was vulnerable to high temperatures. Also, it was found that the number of abnormal pollen morphology atT4 (Con +5~6℃) varied according to the cultivars of V. angularis. Therefore, the differences in Vigna species or cultivars with thermo-tolerance in pollen morphology to high temperature are projected to occur in the changeable future climate.
Unsan alluvial plain is the backmarsh of Seomseokcheon which is a river originated from Chilseongdae(954m) on Mts Taeback, flowing into Donghae in southern Kangreung City, Kangwon Province. The vegetation change, geomorphic develoopment and depositional environment during the late Holocene have been investigated, using the methods such as boring, pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating. Because the deposits fo the study area are mainly consisted of peat and paety sand, they contained many pollen fossils. The peat layer has been sedimented since the high sea-level periods, 3,200 y. BP, and the records of vegetation change until now has well preserved here. According to archeological researches and the results of pollen analysis in east coast of Korea, it is supposed that the prehistoric rice farming in this area has begun since ca. 1,800 y. BP.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of temperature ($15{\sim}40^{\circ}C$) and the spraying plant growth regulators ($GA_{4+7}+BA$ and prohexadione-calcium) during full blooming on pollen germination and pollen tube growth of the commercial apple cultivars ('Fuji' and 'Tsugaru') and apple cultivars bred in Korea ('Chukwang', 'Gamhong', 'Hongan', 'Honggeum', 'Hongro', 'Hwahong', 'Hongso', 'Summer dream' and 'Sunhong'). Pollen germination and pollen tube growth were increased with increasing temperature from 15 to $25^{\circ}C$, but high temperature over $30^{\circ}C$ inhibit those. The apple cultivar bred in Korea that shows the highest value on pollen germination and pollen tube growth at over $30^{\circ}C$ was 'Sunhong'. The spraying $GA_{4+7}+BA$ increased pollen germination and pollen tube growth than control, but that effect was not show at $40^{\circ}C$. The spraying prohexadione-calcium was not affect to pollen germination and pollen tube growth. In conclusion, if the air temperature during full bloom of apple tree rises about $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$, the spraying $GA_{4+7}+BA$ after artificial pollination will be good to increasing fruit set.
Arabidopsis Shaggy-like protein kinases (ASKs) are Arabidopsis thaliana homologs of glycogen synthase kinase 3/SHAGGY-like kinases (GSK3/SGG), which are comprised of 10 genes with diverse functions. To dissect the function of $ASK{\beta}$ (AtSK32), $ASK{\beta}$ antisense transgenic plants were generated, revealing the effects of $ASK{\beta}$ down-regulation in Arabidopsis. Suppression of $ASK{\beta}$ expression specifically interfered with pollen development and fertility without altering the plants' vegetative phenotypes, which differed from the phenotypes reported for Arabidopsis plants defective in other ASK members. The strength of these phenotypes showed an inverse correlation with the expression levels of $ASK{\beta}$ and its co-expressed genes. In the aborted pollen of $ASK{\beta}$ antisense plants, loss of nuclei and shrunken cytoplasm began to appear at the bicellular stage of microgametogenesis. The in silico analysis of promoter and the expression characteristics implicate $ASK{\beta}$ is associated with the expression of genes known to be involved in sperm cell differentiation. We speculate that $ASK{\beta}$ indirectly affects the transcription of its co-expressed genes through the phosphorylation of its target proteins during late pollen development.
Pollen is closely related to health issues such as allergenic rhinitis and asthma as well as intensifying atopic syndrome. Information on current and future spatio-temporal distribution of allergenic pollen is needed to address such issues. In this study, the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling (CMAQ) was utilized as a base modeling system to forecast pollen dispersal from oak trees. Pollen emission is one of the most important parts in the dispersal modeling system. Areal emission factor was determined from gridded areal fraction of oak trees, which was produced by the analysis of the tree type maps (1:5000) obtained from the Korea Forest Service. Daily total pollen production was estimated by a robust multiple regression model of weather conditions and pollen concentration. Hourly emission factor was determined from wind speed and friction velocity. Hourly pollen emission was then calculated by multiplying areal emission factor, daily total pollen production, and hourly emission factor. Forecast data from the KMA UM LDAPS (Korea Meteorological Administration Unified Model Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System) was utilized as input. For the verification of the model, daily observed pollen concentration from 12 sites in Korea during the pollen season of 2014. Although the model showed a tendency of over-estimation in terms of the seasonal and daily mean concentrations, overall concentration was similar to the observation. Comparison at the hourly output showed distinctive delay of the peak hours by the model at the 'Pocheon' site. It was speculated that the constant release of hourly number of pollen in the modeling framework caused the delay.

An efficient system of rice microspore culture could contribute to the production of genetically modified rice. The microspores were isolated by mechanical or shed methods. The number of microspores per 100 anthers isolated at uninucleate stage was higher than (or similar to) those at binucleate stage in isolation method with pestle or spatular, but microspore divisions were not easily observed on both stages. On the other hand, pollen division in shed pollen culture was observed more frequently at uninuclear than at binuclear stage. Cold pretreatment at 1$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 days resulted in the best multicellular division to produce microcalli at 12.5% efficiency in shed microspores. Heat shock at 33$^{\circ}C$ for one hour before or after pollen shedding enhanced cell division and callus formation. Out of twelve green regenerants, two were haploids and ten were diploids based on the chromosome analysis of root tips. The size of stoma was 12$^{m}$ m in haploids and 15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diploids determined by scanning electron microscope (SEM).
