We propose and demanstrate a fiber laser as a sensor, whose output is the frequency of beat signals between eigenpolarization modes of the fiber laser. For the measurement of lateral stress, proportional constant of 4.8 kHz/gram is obtained with a good linearity. For the measurements of temperature and longitudinal strain applied to the polarization maintaining fiber laser, proportional constants of 30 kHz/$^{\circ}C$ -cm, and 43 kHz/${\mu}m$, respectively, are obtained.

We examined the effective utilization of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to enhance the light absorption performance in thin CuIn1-xGaxSe2 (CIGS) solar cells with dual (top and bottom) gratings. The PSO tuned structure was demonstrated to be capable of achieving high and ultra broadband absorption spectra due to well-spaced and well-defined absorption peaks, which were SPPs and photonic modes induced by the metal and dielectric gratings. For only TM polarization and both polarizations, the fully optimized net absorptions exhibit 85.6% and 78.1%, which correspond to ~35.4% and ~23.5% improvement compared to optimized flat structures, respectively.

A numerical method for scattering of electromagnetic waves from a arbitrary shaped grating covered with dielectric slab is considered for TE polarization case from the viewpoints of both reflection grating problem and leaky wave antenna problem. The analysis is based on a periodic Green's function and the method of moments. Numerical results involving some combinations of geometric parameters are presented in terms of relative scattered powers of spectral modes and complex propagation constants.
The structures, the energetics, and the spectra of K+(H2O)3 have been studied at HF and MP2 levels with the basis set of triple-zeta plus two sets of polarization functions (TZ2P) for water molecules. Two structures considered are 3+0 (D3), and 2+1 (C2v). The 2+1 (C2v) has two hydrogen bonds between the primary hydration and the secondary hydration shell water molecules. They have similar binding energy and enthalpy. The most stable conformation of K+(H2O)3 is entropy driven as shown in Na+(H2O)5 and in Na+(H2O)6 cases. The 3+0 (D3) conformation is the most stable at 298 K and at 1 atm, based on Gibbs free energy changes (ΔGr). The thermal contributions to the enthalpy and the Gibbs free energy are corrected for the low frequency modes. The corrected ΔGr is in good agreement with the experimental value. Vibrational frequencies of two conformations are revealed as their characteristics.
We present a detailed analysis of the light extraction efficiency (LEE) of a core-shell nanorod light emitting diode (LED) using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. We found that the LEE has a deep dependence on source positions and polarization directions based on the calculated LEE results for every x and z position inside the core-shell nanorod structure. The LEEs are different for the upper part (pyramid) and the lower part (sidewall) of the core-shell nanorod owing to total internal reflection (TIR) and the generated optical modes in the structure. As a result, the LEE of sidewall is much larger than that of pyramid. The averaged LEE of the core-shell nanorod LED is also investigated with variable p-GaN thickness, n-GaN thickness, and height for the design guidelines for the optimized LEE of core-shell nanorod LEDs.
This paper analyzed relationships between various features from SAR data with multiple acquisition dates and mode (frequency, polarization and incidence angles), and land-cover classes. Two typical types of features were extracted by considering acquisition conditions of currently available SAR data. First, coherence, temporal variability and principal component transform-based features were extracted from multi-temporal and single mode SAR data. C-band ERS-1/2, ENVISAT ASAR and Radarsat-1, and L-band JERS-1 SAR data were used for those features and different characteristics of different SAR sensor data were discussed in terms of land-cover discrimination capability. Overall, tandem coherence showed the best discrimination capability among various features. Long-term coherence from C-band SAR data provided a useful information on the discrimination of urban areas from other classes. Paddy fields showed the highest temporal variability values in all SAR sensor data. Features from principal component transform contained particular information relevant to specific land-cover class. As features for multiple mode SAR data acquired at similar dates, polarization ratio and multi-channel variability were also considered. VH/VV polarization ratio was a useful feature for the discrimination of forest and dry fields in which the distributions of coherence and temporal variability were significantly overlapped. It would be expected that the case study results could be useful information on improvement of classification accuracy in land-cover classification with SAR data, provided that the main findings of this paper would be confirmed by extensive case studies based on multi-temporal SAR data with various modes and ground-based SAR experiments.

We examine the spectral characteristics of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) formed on an amorphous silicon film irradiated by a 355-nm nanosecond laser. A Gaussian beam with a diameter of 196 ㎛ is used to perform a two-dimensional raster scan. The laser's pulse number is varied from 190 to 280, and its intensity is adjusted within 100-130 mJ/cm2. LIPSSs with a periodicity of approximately 330 nm form on the surface of the Si film, aligned perpendicular to the laser's polarization. Transmission spectra of the samples show dips around 700 nm for transverse electric polarization and around 500 nm for transverse magnetic polarization. The features are investigated with a one-dimensional-grating model using a rigorous coupled-wave analysis. Simulations confirm that the observed dips are due to the resonant modes, depending on the polarization.

In this paper, a compact circularly polarized metamaterial patch antenna using the -1 mode that is induced by the composit right-left handed(CRLH) transmission line is proposed. Basically, since the -1 mode is the same properties with the +1 mode of the conventional patch antenna, the circular polarization(CP) is realized. If two orthogonal -1 modes are excited with $90^{\circ}$ phase difference, the CP property can be obtained. In order to obtain two orthogonal modes and $90^{\circ}$ phase difference, 4 mushroom structures having the shape of triangle are employed and the inter-digital gaps are optimized, respectively. The fabricated antenna is based on RT/duroid5880 substrate and the total area of the 4 mushrooms is $0.161{\lambda}_0{\times}0.161{\lambda}_0$. It is confirmed that the center frequency of the proposed antenna is measured as 2.845 GHz and it operates from 2.830 GHz to 2.850 GHz. In addition, the antenna maintains the CP property from 2.842 GHz to 2.847 GHz at the peak gain and the measured radiation efficiency is 46 %.

The leaky wave emanated from the dielectric-coated parallel-plate waveguide with finite periodic thick slot in its upper plate is investigated theoretically for H-polarization case. For this structure, fields in slot regions are expressed as a summation of the parallel-plate waveguide TM modes, and in other regions are expressed in the spectral domain by use of the inverse Fourier transform. Boundary conditions at the interfaces are enforced, and the simultaneous linear equations are derived. The influences of the slot width, slot thickness, thickness of a dielectric coating, and finite slot number on the radiation characteristics (phase constant, leakage constant, radiation pattern) are examined. The results of the finite periodic slot are compared with those of the infinite extent structure and good agreement has been found.
The presence of voids behind tunnel linings is very likely to result in settlement or structural collapse. One proposed method of detecting such voids by non-destructive method is radar. More than effectively judging the existence of voids behind tunnel linings, this study aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids. To acquire directional information and estimate the shape of three-dimensional voids, the radar of three-dipole antenna type is used. As a foundation to this ongoing research, an investigation of microwave polarization methods using three-dipole antenna carried out with various void orientations and void geometries. As a result, it is clarified that the response of four microwave polarization modes depends on void geometry and thus there is a possibility of identifying the geometry and orientation (the shape) of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type.
