Prodigiosin is a natural red pigment with algicidal activity against Cochlodinium polykrikoides, a major harmful red-tide microalga. To increase the yield of prodigiosin production by Hahella chejuensis KCTC 2396, significant medium components were determined using a two-level Plackett-Burman statistical design technique. Among 12 components included in basal medium, $NaHCO_3$, ${Na}_{2}{SiO}_{3}$, ${NH_4}{NO_3}$, ${Na}_{2}{SO}_{4}$ and $CaCl_2$ were determined to be important for prodigiosin production. The medium formulation was finally optimized using a Box-Behnken design as follows: 1% sucrose; 0.4% peptone; 0.1 % yeast extract; and (g/l): NaCl, 20.0; ${Na}_{2}{SO}_{4}$, 9.0; $CaCl_2$, 1.71; KCl, 0.4; and (mg/l): ${H_3}{BO_3}$, 10.0; KBr, 50.0; NaF, 2.0; $NaHCO_3$, 45.0; ${Na}_{2}{SiO}_{3}$, 4.5; ${NH_4}{NO_3}$, 4.5. The predicted maximum yield of prodigiosin in the optimized medium was 1.198 g/l by the Box-Behnken design, whereas the practical production was 1.495 g/l, which was three times higher than the basal medium (0.492 g/l).
FORMOSAT-3 was launched in April of 2006. It consists of six low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will be eventually deployed to an orbit at 800 km height. Its scientific goal is to utilize the radio occultation (RO) signals to measure the bending angles when the GPS signals transect the atmosphere. The bending angle is then used to infer atmospheric parameters, including refractivity, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity fields of global distributions through inversion schemes and auxiliary information. The expected number of RO events is around 2500 per day, of which 200 events or so fall into the polar region. Consequently, the FORMOSAT-3 observations are expected to play a key role to improve our knowledge in the weather forecasting and space physics research in the polar region. In this paper, we use temperature profiles retrieved from FORMOSAT-3 RO observations to study the climatology of gravity wave activity in the polar region. FORMOSAT-3 can provide about 200 RO observations a day in the polar region, much more than previous GPS RO missions, and, hence, more detailed climatology of gravity wave activity can be obtained.

To find out generating mechanism of eddies in the polar frontal zone of the East Sea, we carried out a series of numerical experiments using the nonlinear $1^{1/2}-layer$ model allowing the effect of the polar front. We assumed the polar front at about $39^{\circ}N$ in zonal direction with the cold water region in the northern part and the warm water region in the southern part of the model ocean. To examine the effect of the frontal motion without the influence of the Tsushima Current from the beginning of the geostrophic adjustment, the initial state of the model ocean was assumed motionless. Eastward current was caused by the geostrophic adjustment process in the polar frontal zone that induced a steady northward coastal current along the Korean coast to satisfy the mass continuity. The overshooting of this coastal current acted as an initial disturbance of the zonal flow field which caused meanders and eddies. The spatial scales of eddies were in good agreement with the baroclinic instability theory.

Until now, few groups reported the antifreeze activity of cyclic glycopeptides; however, the tedious synthetic procedure is not amenable to study the intensive structure activity relationship. A series of N-linked cyclic glycopeptoids and glycopeptide have been prepared to evaluate antifreeze activity as a function of peptide backbone cyclization and methyl stereochemical effect on the rigid Thr position. This study has combined the cyclization protocol with solid phase peptide synthesis and obtained significant quantities of homogeneous cyclic glycopeptide and glycopeptoids. Analysis of antifreeze activity revealed that our cyclic peptide demonstrated RI activity while cyclic glycopeptoids showed no RI activity. These results suggest that the subtle changes in conformation and Thr orientation dramatically influence RI activity of N-linked glycopeptoids.

This paper presents a high-throughput low-complexity decoder architecture and design technique to implement successive-cancellation (SC) polar decoding. A novel merged processing element with a one's complement scheme, a main frame with optimal internal word length, and optimized feedback part architecture are proposed. Generally, a polar decoder uses a two's complement scheme in merged processing elements, in which a conversion between two's complement and sign-magnitude requires an adder. However, the novel merged processing elements do not require an adder. Moreover, in order to reduce hardware complexity, optimized main frame and feedback part approaches are also presented. A (1024, 512) SC polar decoder was designed and implemented using 40-nm CMOS standard cell technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed SC polar decoder can lead to a 13% reduction in hardware complexity and a higher clock speed compared to conventional decoders.

Asterochloris is one of the most common genera of lichen phycobionts in Trebouxiophyceae. Asterochloris phycobionts associated with the lichenized fungi Cladonia and Stereocaulon in King George Island (Antarctica) and Morro Chico (Chile), were isolated and then used to establish clonal cultures. To understand the phylogenetic relationships and species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris species, molecular and morphological data were analyzed by using three microscopy techniques (light, confocal laser and transmission electron) and a multi-locus phylogeny with data from the nuclear-encoded internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the actin and plastid-encoded ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large chain (rbcL) coding genes. Morphological data of three Antarctic strains showed significant species-specific features in chloroplast while molecular data segregated the taxa into distinct three clades as well. Each species had unique molecular signatures that could be found in secondary structures of the ITS1 and ITS2. The species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris was represented by six taxa, namely, A. glomerata, A. italiana, A. sejongensis, and three new species (A. antarctica, A. pseudoirregularis, A. stereocaulonicola).

The affiliations and physiological characteristics of culturable bacteria isolated from the sediments of Ross Sea, Antarctica were investigated. Sixty-three isolates obtained by cultivation were grouped into 21 phylotypes affiliated with the phyla Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes and with the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria by phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. Based on phylogenetic analysis (<98.65% sequence similarity), approximately 49% of total isolates represented potentially novel species or genus. Among them, extracellular protease, lipase, and exopolysaccharide activities at $10^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$ were detected in approximately 46%, 25%, and 32% of the strains, respectively. Forty-three isolates produced at least one type of extracellular material and 21 of them produced at least two extracellular protease, lipase, and/or exopolysaccharides. Our findings indicate that culturable bacterial diversity present within the marine sediments of Ross Sea, Antarctica may contribute to the hydrolysis of the major organic constituents which is closely related with carbon and nitrogen cycling in this environment.

The goal of this study is to develop a hands-on type polar field trip program to inform the importance of the recent polar research and to contribute to the spread of polar science culture. For this purpose, the direction of program development and field trip course were established based on the current Korea Polar Research Institute tour program and research exhibition facilities analysis. Based on this, a total of 6 types field trip programs were developed, including one basic tour program and one optional experience program for the overall introduction of polar research institutes and polar science fields, and four optional experience programs for each education participant that enables field trips and professional experiential learning activities by polar science field. The developed program was revised and supplemented through a total of two trials, and a field trip program manual was produced, including guidance scripts, experience kits, activity sites, and instructor guides for each field trip. At the end, a follow-up study was proposed based on the significance and research results of the developed program.
There are increasing evidences of climate change in the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans, especially elevated temperature due to the continuous burning of the fossil fuels and ultraviolet B(UV-B) flux within the ozone hole. Light-dependent, temperature-sensitive, and fast-growing organisms respond to these physical and biogeochemical changes. Polar marine phytoplankton, which are pioneer endemic species and important carbon contributors in the polar waters, are therefore highly suitable biological indicators of such changes. By virtue of light requirement, the primary producers are exposed to extreme seasonal fluctuations in temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and UV radiation. Local environmental warming and increased UV-B radiation during ozone depletion may have profound effects on the primary producers that are primary carbon producers in the polar water. Small changes in climate temperature and solar radiation may have profound effects on the activity threshold of the polar phytoplanktion. To demonstrate biological response to the environmental changes, standardized representative natural and biological parameters are needed so that replicate samples (including controls) can be taken over extended periods of time. In this paper, we review general characteristics of polar phytoplankton, their environment, environmental changes in the polar waters, the effects on the environmental changes to the polar phytoplankton, and the importance of the polar phytoplankton to understand the global environmental changes. The present study was investigated on the DNA damage by the peroxidation of polar and non-polar lipid fractionated from mackerel lipid to elucidate the DNA damage mechanism by fish oil peroxidation. The degree of DNA damage by polar lipid peroxidation became greater with the increase of its concentration, and such DNA damage was induced below 100 millieq./kg in POV for 4 days incubation. Among the polar lipid peroxidation products, singlet oxygen $^1O_2$ and superoxide anion ${\cdot}O_2^-$ greatly affected to the DNA damage than hydrogen peroxide $H_2O_2$ and hydroxyl radical ${\cdot}OH$. Non-polar lipid peroxidation also induced the DNA damage with the increase of its concentration, but such effect was lower than the case of total lipid and polar lipid. And, the effects of active crygens on the DNA damage by non-polar lipid peroxidation was the same as in the case of total and polar lipid peroxidation.
