The pod shattering or dehiscence is essential for the propagation of pod-bearing plant species in the wild, but it causes significant yield losses during harvest of domesticated crop plants. Identifying novel molecular makers, which are linked to seed-shattering genes, is needed to employ the molecular marker-assisted selection for efficiently developing shattering-resistant soybean varieties. In this study, a genetic linkage map was constructed using 115 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from crosses between the pod shattering susceptible variety, Keunol, and resistant variety, Sinpaldal. A 180 K Axiom(R) SoyaSNPs data and pod shattering data from two environments in 2001 and 2015 were used to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for pod shattering. A major QTL was identified between two flanking single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, AX-90320801 and AX-90306327 on chromosome 16 with 1.3 cM interval, 857 kb of physical range. In sequence, genotype distribution analysis was conducted using extreme phenotype RILs. This could narrow down the QTL down to 153 kb on the physical map and was designated as qPDH1-KS with 6 annotated gene models. All exons within qPDH1-KS were sequenced and the 6 polymorphic SNPs affecting the amino acid sequence were identified. To develop universally available molecular markers, 38 Korean soybean cultivars were investigated by the association study using the 6 identified SNPs. Only two SNPswere strongly associated with the pod shattering. These two identified SNPs will help to identify the pod shattering responsible gene and to develop pod shattering-resistant soybean plants using marker-assisted selection.
Sesame has usually been harvested manually in korea. The conventional sesame harvest procedures consists of cutting, binding, drying and pod shattering. The procedures of drying and shattering are repeated $2{\sim}3$ times. By manual works of this conventional shattering, it was found that some extent of pods were has always remained unopened. Therefore, this study was conducted to find a way to save the labor of sesame shattering by use of a drying device; a prototype of shattering machine was developed and tested the performance. The developed prototype consists of several parts: a continuous horizontal inlet using a chain conveyer, a shattering by a shocking agitator, a rotating cone for shattering of remaining closed pods, and a winnow. The shattering ratio measured by this prototype was 90.3%, 6.4% and 3.3% at the first, second and third shattering step, respectively. We found that in contrast to the conventional method which required at least 3 times operations for complete shattering, this shattering prototype with the condition of sufficient dried sesame pod offered more than 90% of shattering ratio in the first operation.

Pod shattering during the maturing stage causes a serious yield loss in soybean. It is the main limiting factor of soybean cultivation and mechanization. It is important to develop varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting and to develop energy-efficient agricultural machinery to save labor and costs. 'Daewonkong,' developed by the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 1997, is an elite cultivar that occupies more than 80% of the soybean cultivation area in Korea because of its strong tolerance to pod shattering. The objectives of this study were to investigate the variation in pod shattering degree in a RIL population developed from a 'Daewonkong' parent and to select promising lines with pod shattering tolerance. 'Daewonkong' demonstrated a high level of tolerance to pod shattering compared to the 'Tawonkong' and 'Saeolkong' varieties, with no shattered pods after 72 hours of drying. Screening of pod shattering showed a clear distinction between the tolerant and susceptible varieties. Also, the distribution of shattering pod ratio in the two populations showed a similar pattern for three years. The promising lines with pod shattering tolerance included 27 lines in the 'Daewonkong'×'Tawonkong' population and 21 lines in the 'Daewonkong'×'Saeolkong' population. The promising lines are expected to be widely used as breeding parents for creating soybean cultivars with pod shattering tolerance.
The developed final shattering machine for labor-saving mechanization of shattering of sesame consisted of input part, shattering part, re-shattering part for unshattered pod and pneumatic sorter. The bundle of sesame was held as upside down and fed into the machine continuously. Then, the fed bundle of sesame was shattered by side shock and agitation. The performance of shattering for the sun dried bundle of sesame of conventional manual work and final shattering machine was compared. Since the shattering ratio measured by the final machine was 97.2% at the first operation, in case of fully dried sesame by drying stand, the harvest of sesame can be completed by only one time shattering operation. The work hour per area of 10 a for the mechanical work and the manual work were 0.3 hour and 13.9 hour, respectively. The total shattering ratio of the final machine with vertical feedings of bundle of sesames was 97.2%.
Since the sesame pod gets open gradually from the lower to upper parts of the stem due to its different maturity during cutting and binding of sesame, at the conventional work for shattering, the procedures of drying and shattering are repeated two or three times. Therefore, in this study, a drying stand with transparent plastic cover was developed to complete the drying and shattering at the same time. Owing to the developed drying stand, simple drying work, the area for drying was reduced prevention of sesame seeds from loss and rain are available. The performance of developed drying stand was evaluated. Before the drying stand was developed, the conventional method and shattering machine for shattering sesame required at least three times of operation for complete shattering. But After drying stand was developed, the complete shattering works was possible with only one time shattering operation. Finally, the developed drying stand could prevent approximately 5% of the total sesame seed production from loss during drying and shattering works.
Late harvest in peanut has often resulted in reduced yield and dissipation of labor by virtue of increasing over-matured pods causing the pod shattering. Present study was conducted to obtain a basic information for deciding optimum harvest time of the peanut in Chungbuk province by examination of yield components at different harvest time of leading cultivars Saedl and Youngho cultivated with vinyl mulching or non-mulching conditions. Peg number and pod number were significantly increased by vinyl mulching and also significantly different by the harvest time. Pod number increased with the lapse of days after flowering was gradually decreased from 100 days after flowering in saedl and 110 days in Youngho. Number of seed-bearing pods and matured seed percent were significantly increased by vinyl mulching and had tendency to increase with the lapse of days after flowering. There was no significant difference in number of over-matured pods and pod shattering percent between vinyl mulching and non-mulching. They increased drastically in 110 days after flowering in Saedl, but in 120 days after flowering in Youngho, Increase in 100 seed weight by vinyl mulching was statistically nonsignificant in both varieties, however, total seed yield was significantly increased by vinyl mulching, showing maximum yield in 100 days after flowering in the variety Saedl and 110 days in Youngho, respectively, Seed yield was negatively correlated to peg number and positively correlated to pod number, seed-bearing pod number, pod shattering percent, matured seed percent and 100 seed weight, respectively.

Pod dehiscence (PD), defined as the opening of pods along both the dorsal and ventral sutures, causes the seed to shatter in the field before harvesting and results in loss of seed yields. However, breeding for resistance to PD is difficult due to the complicated genetic behavior and environmental interaction. The objective of the present research was to analyze the genetic behavior of PD for improving the breeding efficiency of resistance to PD in soybean. PD after oven-drying the sampled pod at $40^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours was the most reliable to predict the degree of PD tested in the field. Keunolkong, a dehiscent parent, was crossed with non-dehiscent parents, Sinpaldalkong and Iksan 10. Using their $F_1\;and\;F_2$ seeds, PD was measured after oven drying the pod at $40^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The gene conferring PD behaved in different manners depending on the genetic populations. In the Keunolkong$\times$Sinpaldalkong population, PD seemed to be governed by single major recessive gene and minor genes, while several genes were probably involved in the resistance to pod dehiscence in the Keunolkong$\times$Iksan 10 population. Heritability for PD estimated in F2 population showed over $90\%$ in the two populations. High heritability of PD indicated that selection for resistance to PD should be effective in a breeding program. In addition, genetic mapping of quantitative locus (QTL) for PD in both populations may reveal that genes conferring PD are population-specific.

The cultivation period of mung beans (Vigna radiata L.) in Korea has undergone recent variations. However, limited research has been conducted on pod shattering and sprout characteristics of mung beans on different sowing dates. This study aims to compare pod shattering and sprouts productivity based on different sowing dates. The research was was conducted with six different sowing dates (early May, mid-May, early June, mid-June, early July, and mid-July) in 2021 and 2022. Delayed sowing dates resulted in shortened days to germination, flowering time, and maturity time, whereas plant height, branch number, and node number increased. In addition, stem thickness and the number of pods per plant decreased. In the mung bean cultivar 'Sanpo', the pod shattering rate ranged from 10.0% to 19.3%, consistently lower than that of 'Dahyun' across all six sowing dates. The sowing date associated with the lowest shattering rate was early June. 'Sanpo' sown in early July and 'Dahyun' sown in mid-May exhibited the highest sprout production, at 871% and 750%, respectively.
