  • The final purpose of this paper is to prove that, under noisy environment, there is significant difference of perceptibility of the place of articulation between fortis plosives and aspirated plosives in Korean. For this research, a perceptual experiment had been made. Two groups of subjects heard stimuli with noise and were required to answer which sound they had heard. The result is that, with noise, aspirated plosives cannot be heard clearly whereas fortis plosives can be heard well.

  • The present study investigates phonation types of the plosives in Bahasa Indonesia in terms of VOT, F0, durations of intervocalic closure, the preceding vowel, and the following vowel. The results showed that two speaker groups have distinct phonation types. Speaker Group I was characterized by a short voice lag for voiceless plosives and a considerable amount of voice lead for voiced ones. Speaker Group II was characterized by a short lag for both voiceless and voiced plosives. Although both groups showed a significant difference in F0 and the durations of individual segments between voiceless and voiced plosives, they had a remarkable difference in the temporal structure of the segments. Speaker Group I had temporal compensation between the intervocalic closure and the surrounding vowels across voice, such that the shorter the intervocalic closure the longer the surrounding vowels, while Speaker Group 2 didn't. This means that there are two different phonation type systems within a language.

  • This study explores the most important temporal cues in the perception of the voiced/voiceless distinction of English plosives in terms of newly defined measures of perception: original signal to response agreement, unit signal to response agreement, and robustness. Seven native speakers of English and three leveled groups of Korean English learners participated in the present study. The results showed that both native speakers of English and Korean groups failed to successfully perceive the voiced/voiceless distinction of English plosives, particularly alveolar plosives, in word-medial trochaic positions. The results also showed that in word-initial and word-medial iambic positions both native speakers of English and Korean groups employ the information in the release burst and aspiration in the perception of the voiced/voiceless distinction, of English plosives, and that in word-final positions native speakers of English employ the information in the preceding vowel, while Korean groups employ the information in the closure interval.

  • This paper investigates phonation types of Malay plosives and compares Malay plosives with Korean ones in terms of VOT, F0, duration of closure, and durations of the preceding and following vowels. This study is significant in that it specifies phonetic characteristics of phonation types of the two languages and provides phonetic bases for teaching and learning either of the two languages. The results showed that Malay voiceless plosives are greater than voiced ones in VOT, F0, duration of closure, but the other way in durations of the preceding and following vowels. Comparison of the two languages, particularly in terms of the distribution of VOT, indicates that Malay voiceless plosives are close to Korean fortis plosives.

  • Aberrations in VOT measures in apraxia of speech are indicative of speech motor programming impairment. In English, overlaps of VOT between voiceless and voiced plosives have been frequently observed in patients with apraxia of speech. Unlike English, Korean plosives constitute trichotomy in terms of manner of production, that is, voiceless aspirated /p', t', k'/ ; voiceless or voiced, weakly aspirated /p-b, t-k, k-g/ ; or voiceless, heavily aspirated /p, t, k/. In this spectrographic study, VOT measures during Korean plosives produced by a patient with apraxia of speech were compared to those by age- and gender- matching normal subjects. The results indicated that there were partial overlaps between VOT of /b, d, g/ and those of /p, t, k/, implying that the errors were phonetic in nature. In addition, larger VOT variabilities in apraxia of speech compared to the normals were noted.

  • The purpose of this work is to examine the English and Korean voiceless plosives from the Buckeye[15] and Seoul[16] corpus in terms of their static spectral characteristics. The plosives were automatically extracted by a Praat script. In order to estimate the percent correctness in the classification of the plosives, discriminant analyses were performed whose trainings were based on four spectral moments, i.e. the center of gravity, variance, skewness and kurtosis as suggested in [6]. Another set of discriminant analyses were performed based on the spectral tilts. In the last set of analyeses, the spectral moments and tilts were both used in the training. Results showed that the correct classification rate did not exceed around 65% in the best case, which suggested that phonetic cues other than the release burst would be necessary including the dynamic spectral aspects and vowel-onset cues.

  • Background and Objectives : 10 normal Korean native speakers participated subjects to investigate the acoustic and aerodynamic study of Korean fricatives, affricates, and plosives and to make good use of the results for the patients with articulation problems. Materials and Method Their productions of [asa], [as'a], [aca], $[ac^ha]$, (ac'a), (ata) , $[at^ha]$, and [at'a] were analyzed with Lx Speech Studio Program (Laryngogrtaph Ltd, UK) for acoustic analysis and Phonatory Function Analyze. (Nagashima Ltd. Model PS 77H, Tokyo, Japan) for aerodynamic analysis. Results : The results are as follows : 1) Plosives showed higher Qx1 in vocal folds closure ratio than fricatives and affricates. 2) Tense fricatives, affricates, and plosives showed higher Qx2 in vocal folds closure ratio than asperated and 1ax. 3) Asperated showed higher Qx1 in vocal folds closure ratio than tense and 1ax. 4) Asperated showed higer peak flow rate than tense and 1ax. Conclusion This results may be helpful for treatment in articulation disorders.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how Chinese learners of Korean produce Korean plain plosives differently in a reading passage and isolated sentences. There are several studies on Korean plosives produced by Chinese speakers, but the study comparing the production of reading passage and isolated sentences are rare. For these purposes, ten Chinese speakers' VOT values of Korean plain plosives were measured using Speech Analyzer. The results show that there is no significant difference between the plain plosive production of a reading passage and that of isolated sentences. In the further studies, the measurement of pitch with VOT is needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the acoustic properties of 9 word initial Korean plosives in the speech of adults with cerebral palsy. Normal adults and two groups of adults with cerebral palsy (athetoid group and spastic group) participated in this study. Speech material included monosyllabic CVC real word pairs. Among the various acoustic properties of plosives, the aspiration duration was measured. Adults with cerebral palsy exhibited different patterns of aspiration duration for triplets of Korean plosives compared to normal adults. In addition, the plosive production of spastic group was distinguished from that of athetoid group. Such acoustic characteristics of plosives of adults with cerebral palsy may negatively affect the intelligibility of their speech.
