  • The turn-to-turn contact resistance of 2G high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils with metal insulation (MI) is closely related to the stability of the coils, current charging rate and delay time [1]. MI coils were fabricated using five kinds of metal tapes such as aluminum (Al) tape, brass tape, stainless steel (SS) tape, copper (Cu)-plated tape and one-sided Cu-plated SS tape. The turn-to-turn contact surface resistances of co-winding model coils using Al tape, brass tape, and SS tape were 342.6, 343.6 and $724.8{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, respectively. The turn-to-turn contact resistance of the model coil using the one-sided Cu-plated SS tape was $ 248.8{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, which was lower than that of Al and brass tape. Al or brass tape can be used to reduce contact resistance and improve the stability of the coil. Considering strength, SS tape is recommended. For strength and low contact resistance, SS tape with copper plating on one side can be used.

  • Peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PB-MSCs) have shown promise in cell-based therapy, as they can be harvested with ease through minimally invasive procedures. This study aimed to isolate PB-MSCs from foals and mares and to compare the proliferation and cellular characteristics of the PB-MSCs between the two groups. Six pairs of mares and their foals were used in this study. MSCs were isolated from PB by direct plating in a tissue culture medium, and cell proliferation (population doubling time [PDT], and colony-forming unit-fibroblast assay [CFU-F]), and characterization (morphology, plastic adhesiveness, colony formation, trilineage differentiation) were examined. There was no significant difference in the PB-MSC yield, CFU-F, and PDT between the mares and foals. PB-MSCs from both mares and foals showed typical MSC characteristics in terms of spindle-shaped morphology, plastic adhesive properties, formation of colonies, trilineage differentiation. These results suggest that PB-MSCs isolated from horses, both adult horses, and foals, can be used for equine cell-based therapy.

  • It is important to develop a simple method oftuning localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) properties, due to their numerous applications. In addition, the careful examination of the shape, size and combination of metal nanoparticles is useful for understanding the relation between the LSPR properties and metal nanostructures. This article describes the dependence of theLSPR properties on the arrays of metal nanoparticles obtained from a block copolymer(BCP) micellar thin film. Firstly, two different Au nanostructures, having a dot and ring shape, were fabricated using conventional block copolymer micelle lithography. Then, Ag was plated on the Au nanostructures through the silver mirror reaction technique to obtain Au/Ag bimetallic nanostructures. During the production of these metallic nanostructures, the processing factors, such as the pre-treatment by ethanol, silver mirror reaction time and removal or not of the BCP, were varied. Once the Au nanoparticles were synthesized, Ag was properly plated on the Au, providing two distinguishable characteristic plasmonic bands at around 525nm for Au and around 420nm for Ag, as confirmed bythe UV-vis measurements. However, when a small amount of Au seed nanoparticles, which accelerate the Ag plating speed, was formed by usinga block copolymer with a relatively highmolecular weight, all of the Au surfaces were fully covered by Ag during the silver mirror reaction, showing only the characteristic peak for Ag at around 420nm. The Ag plating technique on Au nanoparticles pre-synthesized from a block copolymer is useful to study the LSPR properties carefully.

  • Formation of TSV (Through-Si-Via) with an Au seed layer and Cu filling to the via, simplification of bumping process for three dimensional stacking of Si dice were investigated. In order to produce the via holes, the Si wafer was etched by a DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process using $SF_6$ and $C_4F_8$ plasmas alternately. The vias were 40 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, 80 ${\mu}m$ in depth, and were produced by etching for 1.92 ks. On the via side wall, a dielectric layer of $SiO_2$ was formed by thermal oxidation, and an adhesion layer of Ti, and a seed layer of Au were applied by sputtering. Electroplating with pulsed DC was applied to fill the via holes with Cu. The plating condition was at a forward pulse current density of 1000 mA/$dm^2$ for 5 s and a reverse pulse current density of 190 mA/$dm^2$ for 25 s. By using these parameters, sound Cu filling was obtained in the vias with a total plating time of 57.6 ks. Sn bumping was performed on the Cu plugs without lithography process. The bumps were produced on the Si die successfully by the simplified process without serious defect.

  • An acidic, real metal-plating wastewater was treated by a fluidized bed membrane reactor introduced with granular activated carbon (GAC) as fluidized media. With GAC fluidization, there was no increase in suction pressure with time at each flux set-point applied. At neutral solution pH, much less fouling rate was observed than acidic pH under GAC fluidization. Higher solution pH resulted in the increase in particle size in metal-finishing wastewater, thus producing a less dense cake structure on membrane. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand was observed from the fluidized bed membrane reactor under GAC fluidization. Total suspended solid concentration in membrane permeate was near zero. At the raw wastewater pH, no removal of copper and chromium by the fluidized bed membrane reactor was observed. As the pH was increased to 7.0, removal efficiency of copper and chromium was increased considerably to 99 and 94%, respectively. Regardless of solution pH tested, more than 95% of cyanide was removed possibly due to the strong adsorption of organic-cyanide complex on GAC in fluidized bed membrane reactor.

  • In this work, the electroplating of copper was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurements. Its mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of Cu-plated carbon fibers-reinforced composites (Cu-CFRPs) enhanced with increasing the Cu plating time, Cu content and COOH group up to Cu-CFRP-30. However, the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs decreased dramatically in the excessively Cu-plated CFRPs sample. In conclusion, the presence of Cu particles on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs, but the excessive Cu content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system.

  • The recovery of gold in cyclone type electrolytic cell was conducted from solution for stripping gold of PCB by cyanide. The electrolytic recovery behaviors of gold was investigated by reaction time and addition of electrolytic sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and gold plating additive (KG-120). Because the electrolysis generated NaOCl reacted with the cyanide in the leachate by alkaline chlorination, more than 99% of the cyanide was removed at a $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ ratio of 1.0. When NaOCl was added during the recovery of the gold from cyanide leachate in the cyclone electrolytic cell, the recovery of gold was 98% at the ratio of $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ from 0.5 to 2.5 in 480 minutes and decreased rapidly over the ratio of 3.0. Gold was recovered more than 99% by adding 1.5 and 4.5%(v/v) of KG-120 with NaOCl in 480 minutes. In particular, when the concentration of KG-120 was 3.5 and 4.5%(v/v), more than 96% of gold was recovered within 240 minutes and the initial recovery rate was relatively faster. The optimum concentration of KG-120 is 3.5%(v/v) considering the economic feasibility and efficiency.

  • In this work, carbon fibers were electrolessly Ni-plated in order to investigate the effect of metal plating on the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI-SE) of Ni-coated carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The surfaces of carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electric resistance of the composites was tested using a 4-point-probe electric resistivity tester. The EMI-SE of the composites was evaluated by means of the reflection and adsorption methods. From the results, it was found that the EMI-SE of the composites enhanced with increasing Ni plating time and content. In high frequency region, the EMI-SE didn't show further increasing with high Ni content (Ni-CF 10 min) compared to the Ni-CF 5 min sample. In conclusion, Ni content on the carbon fibers can be a key factor to determine the EMI-SE of the composites, but there can be an optimized metal content at a specific electromagnetic frequency region in this system.
